Do I need to call customer service at all, or just once I put the new SIM card in from my old iPhone 5 I can just turn it on?
No need to call customer service. Moving the SIM will automatically activate the phone on your line.

However, in review of your account, I see you spoke with a supervisor earlier this morning and you were advised the shippind date can't be changed and we have to wait until the phone is shipped to cancel order if you want to take that route. I know it is upsetting to get delayed shipping due to our system error. Certainly, I can understand why you'd be upset. Unfortunately, we do not have a way to move up the shipping. - Michelle

Ordered a 16GB 6+ literally 15 minutes after preordering started... still don't have a tracking number and estimate says 10/14. 
AND there are people on this forum that ordered the same device AFTER me and have already had theirs shipped.

My 6 just landed (FedEx) about 10 minutes ago; delivery for tomorrow by 8PM, hopefully it's much much earlier. Hopefully others start getting theirs "close" to them so they can go as nuts as I will for the rest of the night

Yes I feel your pain this whole thing from Apples web site being down, to verizon f ing up so many peoples orders is ridiculous, and to top it off I see that a majority of people just ordered instantly through their apple store app that's how they got through during all the errors, well if you didn't currently have an Iphone I guess Apple is playing favorites.
I still don't see how you guys are getting this done, I have tried multiple times to do this as well, my order was placed in the early morning of the 12th sometime shortly after 12 am had the ecpd error had the fraud department error, and my order was delayed until 5:17am PST and yet they still refuse to do anyhting. What gives??

I was just very calm and friendly and called until somebody acted like it was a normal and understandable request. I am sorry you did not get to talk to the same lady I did.
I was extreme polite until the manager started calling me liar and started being unprofessional towards me.
Your's still in New Jersey? Mine went from PA to NJ. I'm also near Houston.

I have to say, I'm starting to get a bit pessimistic here.
This feels very much like a "late pickup" tomorrow AM sometime that ends up delivery Sat/Monday to me.
It's already 8:30 Eastern.
Phones should be going somewhere by now one would think if they really are going to be delivering/held for pickup in the AM.
