Waiting for Haswell MBP Mega Thread

Is apple known to release products at the investors conference? When is the last time they did this?

Not during the earnings call, but sometimes soon after. In 2011 the earnings call was on July 19 and on the 20th they released the 2011 Macbook Air, Mac Mini, Thunderbolt display, and shipped OSX Lion.

Quick question - sorry if I missed it...any one know...has Apple ever announce/release new hardware following an earnings call? UPDATE:- that was weird...answered above in 2011 apparently...thx

Did they announce it during the call, or was it a quiet release?

Question: How long after release announcement for MacMall, etc.?

Let's just say for the sake of this question that they do indeed announce the day after earnings, which will mean an announcement on next Wednesday.

Question: How long after an official announcement until retailers usually have stuff to actually sell please?
.

Doesn't the apple store normally sell new laptops immediately?

When they announce an update via their website it is usually available the same day or the next day at Apple stores.

This varies wildly by announcement, even if we're just talking about Apple in this case. The Haswell MacBook Air and Mac Pro, for example, were both announced during the WWDC keynote on the tenth of last month. Whereas the MacBook Air was available for purchase later that day, the Mac Pro is still yet to be released. That said, Apple notebooks usually see availability very near to the day of an announcement, if not on the day the announcement is made. Someone may be able to clarify this further, but I believe stock of new Mac computers begins with Apple and reaches third party retailers anywhere up to a few days later.

We seriously need a rumor to come out or something. I'm getting excited at just the possibility of a release next week. Remember, the original reports back before WWDC had a rumor of rMBPs coming out late-July. I'm hoping that's the case here.

I agree. We have to hope for some leaked part numbers.

This is my first Mac (!) and the screen on my current Dell just went out so I am definitely hoping for a release next week.

Does anyone have any predictions for how fast they will enter back order, if at all?

Obviously this is assuming they are immediately available. I've never followed new product releases from Apple aside from the iPhones so don't know what to expect. I would prefer to have a little time to catch the release and look over the specs (not as experienced as most people on here), especially given that I work all day.

You won't see the mass buying spree for a Macbook Pro that you would see for a new iPad and iPhone. You won't have to buy that day to guarantee availability.

i7 v i5

I am soon to become a med student and want to buy a macbook to be my new prize possession before uni. I'm no expert and would like to know whether for general performance an i7 processor with a lower clock speed in haswell macbook air would be better or worse than an i5 processor with a higher clock speed in a haswell rMBP. The main uses of the laptop would be work related, assignments etc... along with web browsing, video streaming and light internet gaming. Now I know I don't need a retina screen for the usage but how can you not just want one!

For general performance they would be the same. Now, if you wanted to compare benchmarks and get very technical about it, the i5 should be about the same as the i7 on the air. The 2012 models of both notebooks had the air's i7 getting a few hundred points higher than the base i5 on the rMBP on geekbench, but still the general performance was the same.

Agreed. Although didn't the 15-inch rMBP cause massive back order when it first came out? But that was different. Nobody should or will have a problem now.

ok thanks. The reason I was thinking of bumping the air up to an i7 was to level the playing field performance wise. Taking into consideration what you say would it be worth it to even bump it up or leave it at i5 for £130 less?

If you need the performance, the i7 is a no brainer. But you also might get better battery life if you stick with the i5. It depends on what you need. If it were me, I would go with the i7.

If you need more convincing, read this anandtech article which discusses the same thing: http://www.anandtech.com/show/7113/2013-macbook-air-core-i5-4250u-vs-core-i7-4650u/5

Any thoughts on if the 13 inch MacBook Pro retina will come with 256 gigs standard and 512 gigs standard for the higher-end model, just like the 15 inch already does?
