Any thoughts on if the 13 inch MacBook Pro retina will come with 256 gigs standard and 512 gigs standard for the higher-end model, just like the 15 inch already does?

That wouldn't surprise me. The 13" Air dropped in price with the last refresh, so the 256GB model is $1299. $1499 to add to retina display and extra RAM isn't really far fetched.

Definitely not a guarantee though since the 13" retina has already had a pretty big price drop since it launched.

The Haswell dilemma.

Hi everyone,

I've been following this thread and have enjoyed all the comments.

I'm also waiting for the Haswell update and ready to purchase NOW!
I spoke to an Apple rep on the phone the other day and he told me the update will not happen until October.....aaargh, that's a long wait!!

....what to do...:(

Heres an interesting comparison between Intel Core i7 4950HQ (Haswell) and Intel Core i7 3840QM (Ivy Bridge, currently in RMBP).

I see this as a real possibility if they decide to keep the base prices the same.

He may end up being right, but I doubt he has confirmation of the release date if it is indeed that far away. If we don't hear anything next week then September/October looks more likely. Nothing to do but wait.

Yeah, I just had Tim Cook on the phone. He confirmed the release will happen on October, but the good news is that the 13" rMBP will feature an IGZO panel, TB2, and 16GB RAM. He said there will some good and not so good surprises with the 15" model... He didn't want to provide more details... I guess the bad surprise is related to the dGPU... :D

Sure you did.

ok thanks. The reason I was thinking of bumping the air up to an i7 was to level the playing field performance wise. Taking into consideration what you say would it be worth it to even bump it up or leave it at i5 for £130 less?

I agree with Watabou; if you think you'll need the performance then go ahead and bump it up. Personally I am considering getting a macbook air (depending on the 13" rMBP refresh) and am greatly leaning towards getting an i7 in it. The other thing you might want to consider, if you're on a more limited budget, is that for an equivalent price you could upgrade the storage instead of the processor. Which would be more important to you then is entirely up to you. Good luck making your decision.

I am soon to become a med student and want to buy a macbook to be my new prize possession before uni. I'm no expert and would like to know whether for general performance an i7 processor with a lower clock speed in haswell macbook air would be better or worse than an i5 processor with a higher clock speed in a haswell rMBP. The main uses of the laptop would be work related, assignments etc... along with web browsing, video streaming and light internet gaming. Now I know I don't need a retina screen for the usage but how can you not just want one!

I had a Haswell i7 MBA and returned it for an i7 13" rMBP. To me, the rMBP is definitely more powerful. You have to remember that these are not the same class of processor; the MBA uses a low voltage processor that is slower, while the rMBP is using a faster, big boy processor.

isn't that if there's impending refresh those macbook stocks will start to dwindle?

i haven't see any stores selling out of macbooks ...

They're all still "Within 24 hours" on Apple.com, for what it's worth.

It would be interesting to see if stores are reducing their stock though. Maybe I'll call some local places tomorrow.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Based on these comparisons:
http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-4950HQ-vs-Intel-Core-i7-3840QM

http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/34..._(PGA)_vs_Intel_Core_i7_Mobile_i7-4950HQ.html

The older (currently used) Intel Core i7 3840QM is actually faster and uses less energy? Why are we waiting for Haswell then?

Clock speed has changed, since it's a new tick cycle, the 4950HQ is only slightly faster to benchmarks but real world performance differs of course.

The 4950HQ is also designed to have a TDP of 47W, even thought it's higher, it doesn't really mean anything. I think they based power consumption on this, hence I think it doesn't actually mean battery life.

I'm sure the battery life is better since Haswell has a new architecture, and unless they have REAL benchmarks then I wouldn't say this is realiable more like spec to spec comparison.

should i buy now or what?

Hello! I'm starting college again in mid August and I'd like to buy a 13" macbook pro. However, I've been following up on the Buyer's guide but I'm still not sure if I should buy the macbook pro now (basic model, it's at $999 with the student discount) or wait for Haswell (I think it's only the retinas that are getting a refresh?). I'm studying (Interactive) Advertising and my college uses iMacs in the "creative" class rooms (aka when we have to use Adobe programs among others). I've only been using Photoshop for now but, going into my 3rd year, I will have to use other programs depending on the classes. A big majority of the students who study something with graphic designing, film and others use macbook pros (there's a percentage of chance that they might not all be new but yeah, that's what upgrading is for, right?). It's not that I'm giving into "peer pressure" since I have been saving up for years. I just want to not regret my purchase. Although the retina may be beautiful, it doesn't convince me so that one is out (plus I sometimes use my disk drive because of my dad).

Sorry if this was a big paragraph but I really need help. Thank you!

Well considering you want a 13 incher I would deffo wait. It's gonna have a pretty decent GFX boost going from HD4000 to I think Iris 5100 but that is on the rMBP. Think your on about the cMBP tho, there is a possibility :apple: might not update it to Haswell but could discontinue that model and just go Retina MBP only. If that's the case you can always get a cMBP from the refurb store.

Just in terms of previous releases, surely by now there would be some more clues other than some geekbench data no? What has been the case in the past?

Perhaps. Can you remember what happened just prior to the most recent MBA update (WWDC)? I don't think there was much evidence indicating a refresh was imminent.

Are you 100% sure? I'm still eagerly waiting for my 13" rMBP Haswell to come :)

Is there a chance for 13" rMBP to have a dedicated GPU, I would love to see one :D

Considering the rumors and uncertainty regarding weather the 15 INCH will get a dGPU this time, it seems extremely unlikely for the 13" to get it

i think the dGPU are still big for the 13" factor of the retina macbook. But who knows...maybe the 765mx if for a minimum 14" factor like razer but for the 13" i assume a 740M will fit and there are not such difference between HD 5100 and 740M, so the final answer is NO dGPU on 13"

These comparisons are automatically created and useless when comparing different generations of CPUs. Also, the information in both places is incorrect since the Core i7-4950HQ only has 6MB of L2 cache instead of 8MB. http://ark.intel.com/nl/products/76085/Intel-Core-i7-4950HQ-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_60-GHz.

We already know (https://www.macrumors.com/2013/07/09/next-generation-15-inch-macbook-pro-shows-up-in-benchmarks/) that the 4950HQ CPU performance is (very, very slightly) better in the benchmarks and that GPU performance is way better. Going on the difference Haswell has made power efficiency wise in the new MBAs you can bet that this has improved for the quad-core Haswells as well.

Thanks for your detailed reply.
I guess I'll wait it out, however painful it will be....
