So, what Win 8 laptops are you considering? Say we don't care about retina screens, and other manufacturers also have nice designs. But is there anything that comes close to to a MBP in component and build quality? Any windows laptop where neither the screen nor the touchpad or the battery life sucks?

The Samsung ativ book 8/series 7 chronos, but it doesn't have haswell yet either

doesn't that defeat the purpose of getting a windows PC because Apple isn't updating soon enough?

Well it looks like September/October by the way they are talking on the call :/ might as well buy a the 13inch retina now. Can't wait till later then mid August with my situation :(

Yup. I'm in the same boat and may very well make the same decision. The 13" rMBP is now a VERY stable piece of hardware. Whatever its problems are, they're very clear and well-documented by this time (and mostly or all fixed, except perhaps its sluggishness when compared with its 15" counterpart).

Dang... I was hoping for a Haswell rMBP to release before heading back to university. MBA it is I suppose :(

Yep
There are no high end haswell 15" laptops that are of the same quality as Macbooks, as Asus/Samsung haven't updated things yet

The leaked benchmarking of both the 13" and the 15", plus the types of chips that Apple usually uses for those given lines.

5100 in the 13"
5200 in the 15" (and possibly no dedicated GPU...we shall see)

I have seen compelling reasoning based on power usage of CPUs and GPUs. in order to keep battery life on par or better then it is now, they couldn't have a high end iGPU and dGpu in the same machine

Intel's Haswell CPU lineup:

Dual core:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/7021/introducing-the-dualcore-haswell-skus

Quad core:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/7002/hit-the-road-jack-intels-mobile-quadcore-haswell-skus

You can also browse through all of the processor SKUs at http://ark.intel.com/

Long story short the only Haswell CPUs with HD 5000 graphics are the 15 watt Ultra Low Voltage dual core processors which are used currently in the Macbook Air.

There are also 28 watt dual core models with Iris 5100 graphics which seem likely for the 13" MBP, and the 47 watt quad core CPUs with Iris Pro 5200 graphics.

All of the other mobile CPUs have HD 4XXX series graphics.

The two leaked benchmarks that we have seen show one computer with a 28 watt dual core CPU with Iris 5100 graphics, and another with a 47 watt quad core CPU with Iris Pro 5200 graphics, which would appear to be at least one model of 13" and 15" MBP respectively.

Based on the available CPUs from Intel.

The HD4600 is the base integrated GPU for most CPUs
HD5000 is available only with 15W ULV - not Macbook Pro material
HD5100 comes with the only 28W processor - good candidate for the 13'' MBP
HD5200 is only available with 45W processors - ok for 15'', not for 13''

Since the HD5200 is more expensive than the HD4600, and has less CPU power, there are two reasonable options for the 15'' MBP:

HD4600 + discrete
HD5200 only

It is that easy ;)

Fair enough, I stand corrected.

Who wants to bet someone things all those references to fall 2013 were just a trick and MBP will be released sooner?

LOL

Except the fact that its hd4000 graphics sux for that screen.
The 13" is seriously crippled by the fact that it has no dGPU.
And the 13" will see the biggest improvement when haswell comes.
So to buy one now (or even when it was released) is just a bad choice really.
At least if you want to do anything else, but just plain surfing and typing on it.

That is not a MBP competitor - ULV processor. Also I don't see a Haswell option.

Some people here have stated that they would go and buy a Windows 8 machine since the MBP is not being updated yet - however there are also not so many Win 8 laptops with Haswell available, and those that I have seen so far had at least one big flaw in reviews (e.g. the crappy display on the Razer 14'').

John123's Summary

From a business sense, the lack of updates makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. I say that as someone with an MBA and expertise in operations. I also say that with an external (i.e., outsider's) view, meaning that I recognize I'm not privy to what's going on behind closed doors. Nevertheless, with all those caveats in mind, I would have bet strongly on seeing an update either to the MBP line or to the iMac line before September. You can re-read my rationale (based on the accounting numbers involved before today's call) here:
https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/17607707/

The fact that we're seeing neither tells me that something else is going on. The top guesses would be an issue with the supply chain, or a more dramatic move than the drop-in CPU+GPU changes we were expecting. If it's the latter, that might be good news for folks who are waiting.

A third possibility--and one that's a lot less fun for us users--is that they simply haven't been able to get the battery life where they want it, despite Haswell, and have had to expend some serious development effort on that.

I still contend that a lot of the theories espoused in this thread--that Apple is waiting to release the new models with Mavericks, or waiting on Thunderbolt 2, or waiting for the Back to School promotion to end--are, in a word, garbage. They might sound good at first, but if you step back and consider them from a business sense--i.e., the perspective of someone who crunches the numbers--none of those are reasonable explanations in the slightest. The reasons have been already articulated by myself and others in this thread.

That said, there are two other rays of hope in all of this.
  1. People who need a computer for going back to school, or for other reasons in the weeks ahead, can now stop consternating and purchase one. The refurbished 2012 models continue to offer an excellent value for the money, and are likely to hold their resale value pretty well should you want to trade up in the months ahead.
  2. For those of us have owned a lot of Apple stock and had it hammered, I guess I'm glad to have it up a few percent after hours. It's a small consolation, but hey, what are you gonna do?

Duly noted. 15" (now) instead?

Doesn't make much sense releasing all products in late Q3 - Q4, most people won't buy both an iOS device and a MacBook, its just gonna harm sales. A lot of people buy opportunistically when they've spare cash, if they've just bought an iPhone they're not likely to buy a MacBook too.

Companies like steady revenue too, so bashing all products out in the last third/quarter of the year isn't desirable.

If someone gets a Windows laptop because Apple hasn't updated the MBPr yet, this someone doesn't really need a Mac.

:D

Well this is pretty disappointing. Now I'm wondering if I should just buy the current rMBP and be done with it. I need more battery life though. I'm outside all day without barely any power sources to use. Ah well. If I could get a nice 16GB/512 refurbished I guess I'll be pretty happy with that.

Call just ended...no announcements for Mac...apple online store isn't down. Dang

like it was said earlier, they could release them tomorrow, but that doesn't look too likely either :-(

I would wait until after tomorrow before buying. Also, you may want to consider whether the refurbished MB is 2012 or 2013 since there were some fixes in the 2013 model. Whether those fixes are worth the price difference or not is up to you though. Just something to consider.

Well that cal was a waste. So you mean to tell me they will release every last product on their site in the damn Fall?? Thats a lot for one quarter and $$$$$$ for some people. ipad, iPhone, rMBP, cMBP, iMacs, Mac Pro, iPods!!

It appears that only 8gb/512 with a 2.6ghz cpu is available unfortunately
