I'd love to see new rMBPs tomorrow as it would allow them a greater period of time for which to accrue revenue for the next quarter.

However, they may be under the impression that releasing a lot of products at once is beneficial due to sales statistics. Maybe their statistics show that few people purchase a laptop with other products they're planning to release at the same time. Therefore, releasing lots of products at once lets them cover as many market segments as possible and have a pretty solid quarter for earnings.

Maybe that's why they are going to wait until Mavericks can ship with it...oh well...then I would say look for iMac and mini before retina Haswell is released because they just can't release all those products in the fall because I could buy a computer now and some other Apple product in the fall, but not both at the same time.

But why would :apple: release a product only to release the new OS a couple months later and have a parade of people get angry because they received an outdated OS.

oh well

Well, I'm really excited! My new Macbook Pro with retina display will have the new OS X Mavericks somewhere in November (with delivery, etc... if released Oct).. Nice ! Can't wait.. :D

I'm so tempted to join you and just pul the plug. I want to wait a few more days though... or a few more weeks... Gargh! If the model that I want shows up in the refurb store I will probably just pull the plug...

There have now been two instances of MBPs with custom builds of 10.9 showing up with Haswell processors.

It could be someone messing with us, but it's most likely Apple's marketing department...
Okay, as much as I love a good conspiracy theory, this just doesn't pass the smell test.
  • People already know Haswell MBPs are coming.
  • The benchmarks aren't impressive. They are a mild speed boost, at best.
  • The only real thing to come out of these benchmarks is BAD publicity--namely, that dGPUs may be on the way out in favor of an inferior graphics card.
Occam's Razor applies: the simplest explanation is usually the correct one. In this case, the evidence doesn't support the claim.

----------

Two: one for a 13" running 10.9 13A2050, and one for a 15" running 13A2052...

One other thing on this. Since today's call leads us to believe that yes, the new machines will ship with Mavericks, let's not confuse cause and effect. I still contend (strongly) that the cause is exogenous. The effect is that there's no reason to test Mountain Lion on these prototypes.

If someone gets a Windows laptop because Apple hasn't updated the MBPr yet, this someone doesn't really need a Mac.

:D

Not a lot of people NEED a mac. Most, including me, just want one. I need a computer for college, early August. I can use a mac or windows laptop, I just like the mac operating system better. I cannot justify purchasing a $2000+ laptop with outdated specs. And by outdated, I mean not the latest.

Usually they give a free OS update, and there is also the point that releasing it with 10.8 is a benefit to customers.

I know half of my software would probably need updates to run on 10.9 and I would want it with 10.8 so I could use it and wait for the 3rd party software updates to have it work properly.

Thats what they did when it first came out a couple of months before 10.7

So, what Win 8 laptops are you considering? Say we don't care about retina screens, and other manufacturers also have nice designs. But is there anything that comes close to to a MBP in component and build quality? Any windows laptop where neither the screen nor the touchpad or the battery life sucks?

Ativ Book 8 or Calisto 1413 (from PC dealer Mythlogic). The Callisto ships in early August and has the i7-4750 (quad core, Iris Pro 5200). Its biggest disadvantage is battery life, which at 5-6 hours isn't great but is pleanty for how I personally use a laptop.

I still might get a 13" Air, but it really isn't the computer I want.

The Samsung ativ book 8/series 7 chronos, but it doesn't have haswell yet either

Important difference though, it has the same battery life as an rMBP, cost similar to a 13" rMBP but power like the 15", meaning it has a discrete graphics card that is on par with the GT 650m, not the crappy HD 4000 which is my biggest reason for not wanting the current 13". Not to mention a quad core processor, also like the 15". I'm not willing to pay the 15" price for last years tech, but I'm willing to lay out $1200 for the same power the the 15" rMBP has with an admittedly worse screen (though being touchscreen is a plus for me personally).

doesn't that defeat the purpose of getting a windows PC because Apple isn't updating soon enough?

Not if that machine has power like the 15" (which I would buy today if it were cheaper), costs like the 13" (I refuse to buy HD 4000 graphics), and has over 7 hours battery life.

Yep
There are no high end haswell 15" laptops that are of the same quality as Macbooks, as Asus/Samsung haven't updated things yet

True enough, but when I need a laptop in the next 3 weeks and the laptop I want (Haswell 13" rMBP) doesn't exist, I have to make a sacrifice somewhere. Quality build and good looks only go so far to mask last years tech when I can get this years for less.

:D

Most of us don't NEED a MacBook Pro, we want one. I personally have been incredibly torn between a Windows 8 machine and a MacBook, unable to make up my mind. Apple taking so long to update is helping me make my choice.

Wonder if the price they were looking for on the PCIe 768gb ssd just wasn't at a margin they liked at this time???

Do it.

I see. System76 also has an Iris Pro laptop that is supposed to arrive in mid/late July. Anyways, even if you pre-order now from either vendors, you still don't know when the machine will actually be available. So you would still be waiting...

Btw, the battery life says "up to 5 hours", so I would guess 3-4 is more realistic. Other than that the configuration looks interesting. If it fits your needs, why not :)

When the new haswell laptops are released, how much do you think you will be able to sell the base configuration of the 15" rMBP for? Assuming it is bought new now and kept in really good condition.

I'm not sure, though I plan on buying a used rMBP to use for a few months or until I feel comfortable buying the Haswell rMBP once it comes out. That way it's already depreciated quite a bit in the first place and I won't lose as much money when I go to resell it come upgrade time. I've found a few nice 2.6 or 2.7 16GB 512GB rMBPs on Craigslist for about $2,000.

The System76 and the Mythlogic are both the same hardware from different vendors. Mythlogic says up to 5 hours battery while Clevo (the ODM who actually makes the hardware) says 6 hours, so I figure Mythlogic has already adjusted down to something more realistic. Looking at all the hardware and the battery size, I see no reason it wouldn't get 5 hours, similar machines do. Obviously under heavy use it will be less. I like that you can get it with Iris Pro, 8 GB of Ram, a 256 GB Samsung SSD, a 1 TB 7200 rpm hdd, and wireless AC for under $1,400.

Just found these iMacs on geekbench

http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench2/2188709
http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench2/2187602

all running 10.9 , 4770ks and apparently have a ram speed of 0GHz :p

Edit: seems to be allot of iMac13.2 entries actually http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench2/search?utf8=✓&q=imac13+4770k going back to early july.

Interesting, but i think these are imacs. As much as i would love an update i don't think its going to happen because of Back to School. Think of all the returns they would have to deal with and the mess of returning the used gift cards.

Interesting, I wonder why they would opt for the unlocked multiplier.

Also, these tests show how the geekbench scores can be changed dramatically through development. I think looking at all the different scores highlights how those earlier rMBP scores shouldn't be emphasized too heavily. The final performance of the new MBPs is still up in the air.

I know I did say they were iMacs :p

So When does Apple Record Revenue?

I have thoroughly enjoyed this thread, and much of the speculation.

I've decided that my Sony VAIO, from 2007, needs an upgrade, and I've decided that I will be moving to a MacBook, of some shape or form, to replace it. It is primarily for work, (Word, Excel, PPT and some work specific apps require Windows in a VM), plus some minor photography for work and other stuff...

I spent 23 years in IT, on the generating revenue side, and one of the key indicators was getting stuff across the line with firm orders. At DEC, it was a line in MA, with DataPoint, it was in San Antonio and so forth... There is a line at Ford, GM and Chrysler that marks revenue....

So where and when does Apple get to record a shipment as revenue?
