EDIT:// Just saw this notebook already being discussed a few posts back, apologies for duplicate posts!

I don't know if anyone noticed but today Razer announced new notebooks featuring both Haswell CPU's and NVIDIA 765M graphics: http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/30/razer-blade-pro-and-14-inch-models-hands-on/

Based on the fact this happened today and we are a good 11 days away from WWDC. I think it is pretty much a lock timing wise that we will see Haswell upgrades at the show.

Razer aren't really even a halfway decent OEM and if they were able to get Haswell samples to get a laptop ready to unveil today I'm pretty sure Apple could by June 10th.

What I would like to see at WWDC (and is feasible):

- retina MacBook Pro with Haswell;
- redesigned MacBook Air with Haswell and a retina display;
- updated Mac Pro.

What I think we'll see at WWDC:

- updated MacBook Air with Haswell;
- updated Mac Pro.

And that's pretty much it.

pretty much what I think as well, I do have a strange nagging feeling that they will use IGZO and go for NGFF, along with AC, and unicorn candy

Does anyone think Apple might be putting an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M GPU into the new rMBPs? That's what Razer equips the Blade with - http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-systems/razer-blade/ - which incidentally looks almost exactly like a MBP - and incidentally, both are 0.71 inch thick.

here are the specs of the new 700m series, the ones that use gk106, those were only released for desktops before.

so yeah, possible? probable? call me maybe?

and here is a review of the 765m, 770m and 780m

http://www.notebookcheck.net/In-Review-Nvidia-GeForce-GTX-780M-GTX-770M-GTX-765M.93277.0.html

just a minor note, those notebooks that they tested usually have a temp of high 70c+ under load for 100w tdp gpus and do support 55w now 57w tdp cpus, quite a different beast in terms of what gpu boost can provide on limited thermal restrictions

That Razor Blade is very impressive.
Depsite aiming for the gaming market primarly and the productivity market secondary, it seems like a worthy contender.
I liked how they compared a 0.71" quarter against the laptop which is 0.68" in the video (The 15" Retina Macbook is 0.71" thick).

Hopefully Apple opts for something better than the 750m

You guys may be missing what's most exciting about the 14" Razer Blade. It is said to be packing an unannounced Haswell i7 processor with a TDP of 37w. So far we have not seen any confirmation from Intel of 37w chips coming in June, even though that is the TDP that would be expected to be used for the rMBP 13". I think that means Intel and Apple do have something up their sleeve with the necessary thermal design for a June 13" rMBP refresh!

If you give a research, you will notice that Intel announce ivy Bridge on late May and in June Apple update the entire line up. So at WWDC it is 200% sure it will be the same. And no, at 15" will not see any high graphic card better than 750M.

I wonder if Apple will offer 2 GB vRAM at least for the high end 15'' model.

The Razer is nice, but that's a gaming laptop... no point comparing with what Apple might offer. I looked up a few reviews and the 765M GPU seems to be decent but not exceptional. However it should run circles around the 650M, and even around the 660M. The 750M is a slightly improved 660M, and seems to look like the most likely candidate for the next MBP.

I don't see big improvements in (discrete) graphics performance with the Haswell upgrade, unless Apple does something radically different from past upgrade cycles.

1st time poster with a question.
Once new versions/changes are announced, how long is it before they're available in the retail stores?

Mr MM mentioned via post #189 the 4702MQ/HQ which he suspects is 37W, and quad-core.

indeed if we follow the intel nomenclature for ivy, we see that the 2 in the end there is for 35w now 37w, sincerely if they put a thunderbolt in this and an IGZO display I wouldnt even think twice, I would buy it, even that it doesnt have 16gb of ram I would buy it

its on the same level as the 670mx, which is quite quite leap from the 660m, around 30-50% in games

No chance for HD4600 on 15" rMBP
There are already rumours for HD5000 and HD 4600 i5 and 4800 i7 i think for the 13"

I hope the new models will run 10x cooler. I know its not a gaming machine but would like more pipes or separate pipes to keep temps down while gaming. (should help right, like the razor)

Usually less than a month. A little more if there are production constraints.

10x coolor? So 10 degrees Celsius while gaming?

I too am waiting for Haswell in a MBPr. I love my 15" MBPr and have found it to be an outstanding workstation for the work that I do. I am looking forward in seeing where they take the MBPr. I do not think we'll see major changes but I believe we'll see the following:

-Apple has had a whole year to watch the MBPr perform in the hands of users. I expect to see some minor design changes to improve upon it. The MBPr was -of course- a Gen 1 product. Gen 2 usually has minor changes to improve the system.

-I love my MBPr but it does suffer from a tad bit of lag depending on the apps that you have running. I normally have some pretty heavy weight applications running and switching between them can sometimes cause a stutter. Especially when you combine a few VMs and Adobe products. Photoshop, I'm looking in your direction.

I am interested in see if this is eliminated with the combo of Haswell's improved iGPU and the dedicated GPU.

-The LG and Samsung have both had some minor issues. I am curious to see if Apple does any changes with regard to display.

-I could make a really good argument for at least 2 GB of memory for the dedicated GPU.

-I love the SSDs and would really like to see a larger SSD say around 900 GB. Crucial has one so I know that the ability is there.

-I believe Apple will move to 802.11ac.

-I'm probably in the minority but I still think Apple will release a 17" MBPr in the future. It was popular with the PROsumers and sold better than the Mac Pro. I think it would really round out the MBP line. Even if it was just a BTO option, I think it would sell well enough to justify Apple bringing it back.

-Battery life is good but I am interested in seeing how much Haswell gives us.

-I'm always hoping Apple adds something pretty amazing that we haven't thought about. :)

I'm waiting for rMBP with Haswell as well. I'm going with the 13" model, as I guess it may well fit my needs and be compact enough to carry around. How likely do you think it is for Apple to release Haswell rMBPs during WWDC?

I would say extremely likely. Flagship laptops for their flagship conference.

Pentad...You are living in my head. As to point #1, I've been saying this all year, but nobody has been agreeing with me. Many people even say that gen #2 was released in Feb. that was not a gen 2, just a minor spec bump and the replacement of a couple parts. Point #4-Hoping for this. Hopefully Apple goes one way or the other and puts an end to this rediculous display swapping game. Point # 6...Begging for a 512 gig base model. I just feel like spending $2,600 on a laptop should entitle me to more that 256. You should come into a new and very expensive laptop already tapped out

Here's what I hope to see at WWDC. (Not saying its likely though)

  • 11" MacBook Air
  • 13" MacBook Air
  • 14" Retina MacBook Pro
  • 16" Retina MacBook Pro

As has been discussed before there isn't much difference now between the 13" air and the 13" rMBP. By make the jump to 14" it would allow for a quad core and perhaps a discrete GPU. 16" will probably sell more then the 17" did especially if they reduce the bezel. It could probably have a similar footprint to the 15" rMPB.

I don't think we will see a discontinuation of the cMPB and their optical drives tell next year. Does anyone know how well those are selling now?
