In addition to this being a rumor from a source that doesn't have historical credibility, even it didn't suggest there was a "custom chip." The language was vague. It could be as simple as something like higher binning. This is how people get their hopes up and then get let down...

Wasn't that the site that first reported Apple switching back to Nvidia for 2012?

In the end benchmarks have to decide whether it is notably better than the standard 5200 Iris Pro - if it exists.

All the Haswell chips with Iris Pro 5200 graphics are quad-core and all have a nominal TDP of 47W.
Yeah and the Intel Y Series has a 7W SDP. Whatever that really means, oh wait it idles at 800 MHz.

47W is the nominal TDP with a configurable one up to 55W. We really do not want to play TDP games.

I do! I do!

:D /s

Joking aside, that could go in the 13" but it won't this year.
1440 x 900 or death on the 13.3" model. I don't want a Macbook Air and I was eying the 1080p IPS ASUS panel notebooks. They're so delicious and they're touch screens too. Wantee...

Well, the Retina 13" is 2560x1600. You can set it to 1440x900.

an HQ computer that is actually shipping

I don't know how long this has been available, but I just noticed it:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00COQIKB4
It is the first computer I have seen with an HQ CPU that is shipping now. it is even the same thickness as a rMBP and has Iris pro PLUS GeForce! But don't try to use this to support the theory that Apple could do the same though, because it is a 17 incher and the battery life is 3.5 hours. Still it's interesting that an HQ laptop is shipping and Apple's not going to release theirs for another month or two. Unfortunate for us who are waiting :-(

From what I understand, these days TDPs are merely guidelines for the design of the cooling solution. Power draw when idle is a few W at most, while during turbo boost the nominal TDP can be exceeded.

This also means that benchmark results depend quite a bit on the room temperature, since turbo boost can be sustained longer if the cooling is more efficient.

@bkin94
That is not an Iris Pro machine!
Also how can you compare that monster (10.6 pounds!!!) to a rMBP (4.4 pounds)???

The resolution is ridiculous for the amount of GPU power available on a notebook in that form factor. I draw the line at 1080p on mobile. That's enough with a discrete graphics card.

I consider it an insult to be suggested the Retina notebooks.

The math is strong in this one.
I drive 100mph, you drive 50mph.
(100-50)/100 = 0,50 = 50%.....

So i drive 50% faster

I got 2 pies , you got 1 pie.
(2-1)/2 = 0,5 = 50%

So i have 50% more pie than you!

Yeah.... So that's just wrong wrong wrong....
To say you drive 50% faster is just plain wrong.
50% faster would be 75mph.
How ever if you said "Your driving at 50% of my speed" you would be right.
Its all about what vantage point you start with.
And i know you are going to blatantly say i'm wrong now. But ask ANY math scholar or what ever. Or google it.

Example:
I have 1 cake. You have ½ cake. So i have 100% more cake then you.
So in this example i used me as the vantage point and i have 2 times the cake you do.

If how ever i say:
You have ½ a cake and i have 1 cake. You have 50% of the amount of cake, i have.
Here i used you as the vantage point

All depends on what you use as your constant. I.e 100%

What he said was correct.

Not really. It has more to do with Mountain Lion. Wait until Mavericks combined with a 5100 or a 5200 GPU.

Is it? Macs released within the past 4 years can easily run a 2560x1440 TB display together with the integrated display. That's more pixels than the retina display. So why shouldn't it be able to run it?

It's a software issue. Not hardware. And the software issues will probably be minimized with Mavericks.

My concern isn't the 2D desktop. I was running 1920 x 1200 on a GMA 950. That sucker would only choke when Flash rolled around.

I appreciate the help but seriously guys, I have more posts than everyone on this page combined.

My early proposal:

13in rMBP - start at $1500

CPU- i5-4258U dual core with iris 5100 ~2.4ghz
Ram- 8gb 1600mhz or 1866mhz??
GPU- only iGPU -5100
Display - same
SSD - start at 256gb (how much would they charge for a 512/768 upgrade ?)
FaceTime camera up to 1080 from 720
Same wifi and ssd speed upgrades that were in the air
Battery life - 10-12 hours? With mavericks and haswell?
Thickness - around .7 inches

13in rMBP - $1700 model
Faster CPU
512gb ssd
8gb Ram

15in rMBP - starting at $2000? Down from $2200

CPU- 4950HQ-Quadcore with Iris 5200 ~2.0ghz
Ram - 8gb. 1600mhz or 1866mhz?
GPU - Iris 5200
SSD - 512gb (any idea how much 768/1TB upgrades would cost ?)
FaceTime camera up to 1080p
Same wifi and ssd upgrades that were in the air refresh
Battery Life - 10-12 hours?
Thickness - .71inches again

15in rMBP - $2500 model? From $2700
Same CPU
SSD - 768gb
Ram - 16gb

I am completely just making educated guesses here, I am probably very off in a lot of areas. But I just want to hear what more people think so I can get a better idea of what I will be buying a month from now.

Didn't we already point that out?

Yes many of you have. And I appreciate it

Thanks.

I just want even more criticism

HAHAHA.
Yes and that makes you all mighty and all knowing.
Cos surely no one with that many posts cant be wrong, right?

Btw im not really saying you are. (But you are :D) But that statement was just bonkers.
Just cos you dont like or need more then 1080p on a notebook, and see it as an insult, dont make everyone else have that feeling.

I've been around the block a few times down here and on Page 1. Bleeding edge computer hardware and interoperability is a personal forte.

Well if you want a great idea of what you will be buying soon, then you can do what I and others have done, and that's research everything like hell. Predictions or dream specs won't do much good.

We all have a pretty solid idea of what will be coming.

Yea there's some seriously janky math going on in this thread. The main issue is people misusing the percent change equation.
Percent Change = (Final - Initial)/Initial
and if you add 1 to the decimal of the %change you get the factor (a number going from 100 -> 150: (150-100)/100 = .5 (50 percent increase) or +1 to get 1.5 ( 100 x 1.5 =150)

It's a 37W Quad Core with GT2.

You're looking at 47-55W for Iris Pro graphics in a quad core.

I know that's what I said. It is a GT2 aka HD 4600. It is 37W I never said otherwise.

And my question is: why would apple put a GT2 in the pro. When the air has a more powerful GT3

I have done research just like all of you. I didn't post dream specs I posted very realistic specs. And so all of us have a pretty solid idea of what is coming. And since this is a rumors forum. I posted what I think it will be, so all of you intelligent people can discuss what we all think so we can get an even better idea of what is coming. I was hoping to start up a conversation between other people about various hardware that will be inside the machine. Conversations like this happen all the time on these forums

That is not going to happen. The base 15'' MBP has always shipped with the base i7 quad core. In the current generation, that would be the 4750HQ.

The 4950HQ might appear in the high-end model for $2500 or whatever the price will be, unless Apple makes people happy and offers the high-end model with 4900HQ +discrete.

I also can't image that the base model will ship with 512 GB. Prices haven't come down that much over the year.
