Come to think of it, October would work out pretty well. That's when the Discover 5% Cashback Bonus for "online shopping" starts. Also, I'm pretty sure Apple also provides another 5% cash back if you go to their site via Discover's, which means it'll come out to 10% off. It'll pay for sales tax, at least.

Actually, 5% off something already with 5% discount would be 9.75% discount :D

Just FYI for anyone curious, I did confirm with a Discover rep that the discounts are stacked. You do still get the online shopping even when you use ShopDiscover.

I would recommend that you guys check again. That's not the way it's worked in the past; instead, it's been an either/or. I know because (A) I tried to stack them, and they didn't, and (B) I asked reps too, and they told me no dice. Of course, it's possible that the internal policy has changed, but if the ShopDiscover discount stacking affects whether you'd go with Apple versus a third party reseller...well, if it were me, I'd certainly verify.

14-day return period expires 9/20. There remains the possibility of a MBP announcement on 9/10, with availability on/after 9/20.

Well isn't that convenient, the same date as the underwhelming iPhone 5S launch (apologies to anyone who is excited about this launch, but you know what I mean). BTW, Apple may indeed have first pick of Intel stocks. They can make a far more compelling deal than MS or any Windows laptop builder.

That accidental "Sept 21" release date attached to the most recent build of Mavericks mean anything to anyone? The way I calculate it, you could still return your purchase from the 6th on the 20th, but not on the 21st.

No, I don't know what you mean (I'm not so jaded).
What I do know is that my iPhone 4S is at the end of contract, and I'm looking forward to the iPhone 5 form factor (with the added power and functionality afforded to the "S" models).

I plan to be very "whelmed".
(It's fun to maintain a sense of wonder -- it keeps you young.)

I didn't think bulk supply of haswell chips were ready yet, because no other notebooks are currently available with the 4258U and 4288U, and I thought I saw a post on MR that the chips wouldn't be available until late october, unless apple has special powers with Intel.

You haven't seen any because Apple bought them all :D

I was lucky enough to be able to go from the 4S to the 5 at not extra cost by selling the 4S to Gazelle. You will be very satisfied. It's so good I have no urge at all to upgrade to the 5S even if it were free. So your new phone should be great.

I'm referring to the media reaction. How some of us feel does not reflect the large collective "meh" you're going to hear from the tech media, and that DOES matter to Apple.

I'll be picking up a 5S myself, but I gain nothing from convincing myself that the public reaction will be positive.

It would make more sense to not announce the Haswell MBP until the 21st, with immediate availability. Your idea would simply result in 10 days of near-zero MBP sales.

There is always the possibility of the rMBP still coming in September, just not at the event. Although that would be less likely.

I think everyone should get 16GB, if they can. It's only 200 more and you can never upgrade your ram. Plus you get a significant boost in longevity of your rMBP.

I'm getting 15-inch base CPU + 512GB SSD + 16GB ram.

I feel the same way. I don't use my full 8GB of RAM right now, but I want the extra breathing room. I'll be getting the same configuration, but the higher clocked "base" CPU. My late-2008 15" MBP (2.4GHz C2D, 9400M) is on its last leg.

I agree, I'm still figuring if I need 256 or 512

My wish list is not going to happen. hehe

13"
Quad core
TPM CHIP that can be shared with a VM (DirectAccess Win8 for work)
Haswell

Macbook Pro is the only laptop that is thin, light, high pixel density, good build quality that can run 2x 30" 2560x1600 + 1x 1080 out the box. However, it has no TPM chip so I'd have to carry around a smart card reader and my work badge. oooof.

:(

I don't know anything about that (I live in Denmark). I was simply correcting the percentage :D

Exactly my thoughts! I think it can happen.
