gfxCardStatus worked pretty well for a while until an update made it a lot less effective. But maybe it was never effective in the first place.

Yeah, you used to be able to force the dGPU off entirely using that utility. Worked great, never ran into an issue with it (most of the applications that turn the dGPU on clearly don't need it). As you said it unfortunately can no longer force the dGPU off (though you can still force it on if you want).

Actually, you can force the dGPU off, but you have to terminate everything currently using it first. And then when you terminate an app that would normally use it, the dGPU gets forced on. I pretty much gave up and just left it on Dynamic Switching since I'm on AC most of the time.

Apple stopped selling the old Mac Pro before announcing a new one.

Here's my theory: Apple received so much backlash from the lack of updates regarding the Mac Pro, they were forced to show their hand lest the heavy pro users abandoned them completely.

Apple have been prohibited from selling the old Mac Pro in the EU since (if I recall correctly) 1 April 2013.

From issues with the fan not complying with EU standards.

You Canucks are different. That's were the U.S. dumps old stock. :D

My mistake.

I was looking at this:

Did ya read my reply? I'll paste it here in case you might have missed it
I was looking at that too for a bit until I went on the store:rolleyes: Apple can make the stock of their products disappear pretty quickly, I believe their was something in Steve Jobs biography about this, but I don't remember what it said. Apple didn't give a ******* when everyone complained last year, why would they care this year? They showed it because they wanted to build up anticipation and they wanted people to get adjusted to the idea of a basically non-expandable computer in a trash can that has a lot of thunderbolt 2 ports. And perhaps they wanted computer accessory companies to get their products ready for thunderbolt 2. In the rmbp's case, Apple perhaps also wants to build anticipation for a machine they wanted to release in September, but due to manufacturing/stockpiling parts problems ( IGZO and special Iris Pros:)), they had to release at a later date. I don't believe Apple would have even held off the Mac Pro release if they had everything available in time for WWDC. And announcing it before the launch would actually follow in the footsteps of the Mac Pro, both being in Apple's mind "Pro" machines. The time between the announcement and the launch for the rmbp would be a lot smaller, showing that the update will be a lot less significant, all the while keeping inline with the "Pro" factor. It wouldn't be too hard to even just sell of the remaining 15-inch rmbps, since perhaps some people would want the dgpu. They probably planned ahead with the 13-inch, keeping it in relatively low stock for a month, but making sure it is enough to meet the Amazon and other tech retailers"In stock" requirements.
Please don't take this negatively, I just dislike it when people don't reply to something I say, which makes me feel like a control freak :(

I figured out why it wasn't letting me copy the embed code, so I then tried to out into Wordpress, but I guess some parts of the code weren't allowed. I'll have to survive with the link and the weird menu thing.

Waiting for Haswell MBP Mega Thread

I'm sure I'll get a lot of people quoting this post saying that it's stupid, etc, but what if the mbpr had a finger print reader? What if that was the big change?
I mean, there's going to be the iPhone 5c, similar to the cmbp, without one. Yet the iPhone 5s will most likely have one. And the iPhone 5s is the iPhone equivalent to the rMBP.
And before you start saying "yea but iPhones are different than macs" and how apple never really makes changes that drastic, just think about it.
They're constantly making ios and osx more and more similar. They brought notification center to the mac. And yes, they don't normally make drastic changes, or adopt new technologies, but they're doing it for the iPhone 5s.
And yes, there haven't been any leaks showing this, but there haven't really been any leaks at all. Sure, there was that analyst who said it would have Haswell and a 1080p camera, but that would not merit this long a wait.
Yea, it seems a bit odd for apple, but this whole iPhone 5c and 5s thing is odd too.
They're all for this one identity that does everything, from iCloud to iTunes, and on your phone, ipad and Mac. They're making it linked to your finger Print for the new high end iPhone, they could very well make it linked on the new Mac too.
Yea, it's a long shot, but who knows?

Sorry, did this on my iPhone, might have a few typos.

Does anyone still believe that the rMBPs will come out tomorrow? I do. But only a tiny bit. :(

I think my patience has been dwindling every day. I actually haven't touched OS X for quite a while now. And for me, this is a big deal since I've used it constantly for 5 years so I miss its user friendliness, gestures, and most of all, the apps.

My broken screen MBP has already started collecting dust since I ditched it a month ago when uni started. I updated all the software on it just to use OS X again.

After having to use Linux for personal + uni and Windows for work, I think I fell in love with how OS X does things all over again. Can't wait to use it again. I think I can wait until October but if Apple delays it even further, I might just cave in and buy the current rMBP. :(

it is really frustrating that is why I made my purchase of the rmbp 15 and I will sell it off when the new ones are launched.

I could not wait any longer. From the looks of it an update tomorrow looks highly unlikely but we shall see.

it's a long shot, ....

If I were in your shoes, I would order a refurbished rMBP this very minute.

The only reason I'm waiting is that I'm in Europe now, but I'll be making a trip to the States (to a state with no sales tax) later this month / early October. I will buy whatever rMBP is available then, whether Ivy Bridge or Haswell.

.

Done. Ordered the refurbished rMBP.

... Yeah right. :p
Well, this may be just me but I really don't want a refurbished rMBP. And if I did want one, wouldn't it be better to wait until the Haswell get released? Then they will be even cheaper. I wouldn't want to pay $100+ more for a refurbished one because I was impatient! :)

I would happily pay $100 to have one month's use of a rMBP if I didn't have any other Mac to use.

Yes but then you would have endless regret. You would always think of what would happen if you had just waited one more month. I highly doubt Apple is going to delay the rMBP after October.

Okay, this madness has to stop. Apple has to release the new MBP today, so we can get back to our lives.

I'm so constantly thinking about it that I even dreamed about it last night. I dreamed I was in my local Apple store, and the salesman took me to a seperate room where he disclosed that there had been supply problems but that now everything was solved and Apple was about to finally reveal the new MBP. I was so excited I wanted to get to this forum immediately to post this news, and then I woke up and realized it was just a dream.

Hah, glad that I'm not the only one having these dreams.

One of my dreams involved a clumsy Phil Schiller dropping the new rMBP multiple times during the keynote and then revealing to the surprised audience that the rMBP has infact gained 0 scratches or dents because it was made from carbon fiber. :D

anti-glare ever an option?

Does anyone anywhere think Apple will introduce an anti-glare rMBP in the next version? Despite wishing it was so, I doubt they'll do it, but wondered if anyone else thinks I'm wrong.

If they don't introduce an anti-glare version, do you think there's a possibility the new rMBPs will have further improvements on its anti-reflective capabilities? IOW, will retina ver. 2 be better than ver. 1?

Finally, what about the cMBP anti-glare? Will Apple keep this available when the rMBP ver 2 is released?

I know these are all speculative questions, but as I continue to wait for the rMBP, what else can we do but speculate???

(I just did a self-swap logic board on my mid 2010 MBP to give it more life while I *continue* to wait for the haswell rMBP... but I hope I don't have too wait long...)

That's because they're idiots who don't even realise that for light use the dGPU isn't turned on, so Iris Pro doesn't even offer better battery life - the sole upside they're selling.

What they want is a 13" Air, I don't know why they're in the MBP thread, hoping that the machine is gimped for the people that actually need it - they don't need a quad core CPU, or 16Gb of RAM let alone the dGPU for anything they do.

Iris Pro is a GREAT option for the 13. In the 15 it will result in slower CPU, less RAM (1Gb reserved for graphics), worse graphics and for what gain? Not better battery, since you can run off integrated even with a dGPU for that. So basically no benefit whatsoever, and lots of drawbacks. Great idea guys.

If you want to browse the internet for 12 hours get a MBA or an iPad - Apple has designed the perfect products for you, stop fooling yourself into thinking you need a MBP for that.

Where did you get the information that getting rid of the dGPU doesn't help with battery life?

Assuming full load, a quad-core Haswell with Iris Pro uses 47W, while a quad-core Haswell with dedicated graphics like the 750M uses perhaps 90W or even 100W*. The other components use couple of Watts and the screen is in the same order of magnitude as the proc (30W?). So, I would estimate it could save 33% under full, so it can be used up to 50% longer under full load.

I mean, if they would install the 760M GTX, then it would matter, but the 750 M GT doesn't do anything more than Iris Pro, so you are better off without it.

Besides, integrated graphics make cooling simpler, and also reduce the cost.

Last note: it may actually be the case that Apple is waiting for Intel to deliver the processors. Apparently, the production capacity for Haswell 4250/4650 CPUs (with HD 5000) is so low that Apple is still the only (steadily available) supplier. Although Intel 'launched' some Haswell mobile cpus with Iris Pro in June, no vendor has actually brought any notebook with those to the market.

* The actual power usage of Nvidia mobile graphics is the best protected secret in industry, even Notebookcheck doesn't have any info.

Morning guys! (Yeah - it's 9am here in Denmark).

Just browsed through Geekbench results, and saw this one from yesterday: http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench2/2287542

An iMac with Haswell running 10.9.

Maybe just a Hackintosh. But if it's true, Apple might be close to releasing Haswell updates.

I can't believe if they'll update the Air and iMac and leave rMBP behind. It's their top og the line product. It should have the latest and greatest.

We'll see tonight at the event!

Nah, just too depressed by the obvious non-event to post... :D

Yeah. It ain't coming out today. Bummer. But at least I'll be getting a new iPhone with a new iOS to figure out while I wait...Not one month but a month and a half for my new computer.

I just remembered my dream last night. It was about me very angry so I destroyed my current PC. I hope it's a sign.
