Has there been any leaks on the MBPr? Not counting speculation of when it will be release or theory of what it may consist of. Only thing I can think of is the Geekbench benchmarks, but I'm really starting to question whether those were real.

I mean, I'm sure Apple has it's own benchmark software, but even the leaks are suspicious; first Mac Pro benchmark, a-bit latter a 13" benchmark, a-bit latter a 15" benchmark.

Either a really, really, really dumb Tech that was given access to early builds (who I'm sure is fired by now, but not sure I believe Apple would give access to early builds to that dumb of Tech) or a planned leak by Apple (just don't think Apple would go that route).

So given no new announcement and I need a new laptop for my course starting on the 24th of October, do I just buy an Air now or do I wait a bit longer?

I would wait. I would say new rMBPs would almost certainly be out then, or if not then be out that week.

Apple doesn't want to release computers for some reason.

Not true, if we go by their refresh cycles they're still on time. You will see many Mac updates in October (including the rMBP), IMO.

The talk of Apple waiting for Broadwell is rubbish, we've already seen Geekbench scores for Haswell MBPs.

Wait wait sorry I'm losing my mind. I have a course starting 24th of September (not October). That only gives me another two weeks for Haswell.

You are taking an upgrade that will probably have the same performance as the current rMBPs at best and probably worse in at least a few areas way too seriously.

I don't think it's unreasonable to be expecting more from a company that sells a cheaper computer with 'better specs' than their premium lineup. I disagree with you : the idea of spending $3K on a machine that has slower SSD, slower wifi standards (as minimal as the real life impacts are) compared to the Air is a total non-sense.

You have no idea what kind of work I do with it, and even if I was just surfing the web and checking my emails, that's my prerogative to avoid drinking the Kool Aid this time around.

I won't get into the heated debate about iGPU vs dGPU, but I simply do not feel comfortable buying a laptop that's been engineered at best in 2011 when a new one is right around the corner. I also don't think that getting more battery life out of a portable system is to be overlooked so greatly. At more than $2K base price, this isn't simply disposable tech like an iPhone we're talking about.

I'd understand your comment on the 'waiting for the Haswell iMac' thread, here it just feels out of place. That's all.

Pretty sure many of us noticed the fail-trend of Kuo a while back. Obviously nonsense. You ever tried a google image search for Kuo? I wasn't completely joking earlier in this thread when I suggested he was a work of fiction. ;)

I did. And the images are priceless. Tbh, I think he was lucky for a few product launches but anything he predicted in 2013 (minus the AIR) has been wrong so far. August was supposed to see the new iMacs too based on his prediction.

Total fail.

It's pretty disappointing. Not even a mention of the Mavericks release date. No silent updates.

BTW, is this the first September event since the introduction of the iPod where no mention has been made of them?

I guess I was wrong on a couple of fronts in my article.

Yeah did you see this one ( :D:D:D ) :

The talk of Apple waiting for Broadwell is rubbish, we've already seen Geekbench scores for Haswell MBPs.

Perhaps they were just testing out Haswell, but decided it would be better for their ever loyal customer base to benefit from Broadwell since Apple obviously hasn't been able to stockpile enough Haswell or other parts to be able start selling it. They obviously do not want to go through last years iMac backlog again. Perhaps if they wait until January/February for Broadwell and IGZO, we'll get a truly awesome machine, although I'm not saying a Haswell rmbp wouldn't be awesome, it would just be less than one with Broadwell and IGZO. I do not know much about Broadwell's integrated architecture, but I've heard it might be bigger than the Ivy Bridge to Haswell improvements. It could be due to the fact that Intel is moving to a new Graphics architecture for Broadwell.

At Intel's event today, they said Broadwell "might" be available in the second half of next year. I don't think Apple's wating another year.

But it will be sweet - they're moving to a 14nm build process, and they're supposed to be 30% more power efficient and faster than Haswell

Same situation as you :/ got an 2013 air right now but might return

Its horrible, but the upgrade between air and RMBP is around £250 for me

Yeah its quite the difference in money. But I think it will be worth it once they're updated. The Air's do have a slight advantage over the MBP's right now, but once haswell hits, the Air won't have nothing. I'm betting Air sales will probably drop.

Broadwell is expected for release in the second half of 2014, not early 2014. I honestly dont see Apple waiting another year and skipping a generation of Intel, but then again, I never expected them to make us wait this long for a refresh

Wall Street is not impressed. They expected something more.
I did some checking with friends on Wall Street. The specific reason for today's drop in stock price is that Wall Street was expecting an announcement of an iPhone deal with China Mobile. The NTT DoCoMo announcement was not enough to meet expectations.

I have a course starting 24th of September (not October). That only gives me another two weeks for Haswell.
I think the end of the 14 day return period following the end of the BTS specials will be the next reasonably likely time to release new Macs. That could be MBP, iMac, or Mac mini.

I'm betting Air sales will probably drop.
MBA sales will drop from cQ4 to cQ1, as always. MBAs sell well during the holiday buying season. Also, the MBA will soon not be a new product anymore. I doubt that the effects on MBA sales from the availability of alternative Mac laptops with Haswell and 802.11ac will be significant compared to the effects from the end of the holiday shopping season.

dissapointed with apple today, all the ios fiends make up such a large part of apples profit us pro users dont mater as much.. its too bad a 15 year old girl is more profitable than a 3D animator.. I have a specific finger in mind for you apple... alast, I will still buy your over priced computer and your overpriced OS because its sexy as hell, I will just try not to think about the fact I could get a faster PC for half the cost.

Get the Air if you absolutely have to buy in the next 2 weeks. Unless you want the Retina display bad enough to buy outdated tech.

Though I wonder if a September release is possible, by way of silent update. I doubt it, though. I think if Apple were going to release it in September, it would have been mentioned today.

This post reeks of "pro"... ;)

I will buy a rMBP in the next four weeks, whether the Haswell MBPs have been released or not. Haswell, 802.11ac, and PCIe SSD are not "must have" features for me. The Retina display is much, much more important to me.

So if you had to buy in the next two weeks like I do would you buy a old MBP or Haswell Air?

I actually am in your situation. Need one for school. However, I was going to pick up the rMBP, but I can't justify spending that much money when an update is this close.

Do you absolutely need a laptop for the class? Do you have an iPad you could use until the rMPB revs? Heck, if it's just notes you could get a cheap BT keyboard for your iPhone.

Another option would be to buy an Air and then sell it to fund the rMBP.

Or you know, buy a nice little moleskine and a kickass pen/pencil? :D

It's a web programming course so unfortunately I need a laptop. I could potentially survive a week or so on a borrowed laptop (but it's pretty archaic) if the rMBPs are released by then.

This will be my first Mac but by the looks of it they do have a decent secondary market so maybe buying an Air is a good option.
