Would it be possible to see a touch ID in the form of a dedicated power button??????? Seems like it would work, and be design friendly.

Soooooooo, the Intel 4960HQ, 4950HQ, and 4850HQ all come with Iris Pro, and at 47 TDP. Why would we assume that they can't also add a dGPU to that set up???

----------

Wrong thread actually. But it can very well stay in this one too

We're mainly basing this on the Geekbench results which showed the 4950HQ chip and no dGPU. This could be wrong though, at least I hope it was.

And there's not a huge difference between the Iris Pro and the 750M (which is just an overclocked 650M).

What about 760M? That has a decent spread from the 650M. Not that great, but it's a decent spec bump type of increase. It would make good sense for them to place a 760M in there and clock it to around a 765M or maybe in between. I don't think that would put the TDP over the top. Also the price of those Iris Pro chips are not as high as people had previously accounted for...

And yes I'm aware of that. I'm commenting on the possibility that the Iris pro could be the base model. And mid-high tiers would have Iris pro + a dGPU.

If the 1TB SSD was included as a BTO option, would Apple then in turn up the base SSD storage? I'm guessing they probably would.
I don't think 2013 or even 2014 will be the year Apple will raise the base SSD to 256GB. Doing so would require a base price at least $100 higher than leaving the base SSD at 128GB. Until a few months ago, Apple were still offering 64GB SSD as the base configuration on the 11" MBA. That was sufficient for some users, so it is way too early to abandon the 128GB option. I would be willing to guess that approximately 50% of rMBPs have shipped with 128GB SSD. Until that falls nearer to about 10%, it doesn't make sense to move to 256GB. On the other hand, we might see a bump to 160GB, but next year seems more likely.

It's not a question of whether or not Apple can add a discrete GPU. Of course they could add one, just as they could rifle handgrips for gamers. The question is whether or not Apple will add a discrete GPU.

The whole point of Iris Pro 5200 HD graphics, which Intel developed largely for Apple, is to obviate the need for a discrete GPU by providing good integrated graphics performance. So, if Apple were to include a discrete GPU in the 15" Haswell MBPs (which I think would be an insane business decision and I would sell my AAPL stock if they did it), then it would be paired with a Haswell GPU with weaker HD 4600 integrated graphics.

Intel HD 4600 plus a discrete GPU would, in my opinion, be crazy. Iris Pro 5200 plus a discrete GPU would be double crazy.

Disagree - especially if the rumoured TB2 4K display is released at the same time. I would want my rMBP to have a dGPU to drive that when being used in clamshell mode at home, and integrated graphics wouldn't do that. I wouldn't expect the dGPU to be standard of course - but should be an at checkout option. AND should be a GOOD dGPU as well....

Don't assume mobile means that the computer wont be used for power needs - anything from 4K video rendering to (yes) games. the rMBP is a flagship product and needs to keep the crown

dunno if this have been mention it before, what if Apple waiting for DDR4?
and maybe they will implementing PCIe based SSD for their next MBPr....

a total revolution logicboard and for sure they also waiting for Mavericks to be ready for that.

so maybe november? :D

I honestly think having a fingerprint reader on the Mac Pro is totally stupid. At least if its located on the computer it self.
And i don't ever think it have been done. Fingerprint scanners on computers have existed for many years., and I've never even heard of any scanners located on a stationary computer.

The Dell M1330 had a fingerprint reader many years ago

So exactly how was your picture trying to disprove my statement?
The only thing it proved was exactly what i said.

I said that fingerprint scanners have been around for many years on computers. BUT it have as far as i know never been done on a STATIONARY (DESKTOP) computer.
And it would be a really stupid application to put one on the chassis of a stationary computer. Cos they are more then often out of arms reach.

The only way to implement it would be to implement it on the keyboard or the mouse. And then just like other people said, it is very susceptible to man in the middle attacks.

But they could negate that with having the fingerprint data only stored on a CPU located on the keyboard. And the keyboard only sends a encrypted "accepted/declined" signature to the computer for login.
So it will be treated just as it is on the iPhone.

That way it will be just as "safe" as wireless keyboards are now. Since the accuall fingerprint never get sent any where.
And the "accepted/declined" can be intercepted just the same way as a password can when you type it.
The difference is that the fingerprint cant be intercepted. And your fingerprint is safe.

The question is whether or not Apple will add a discrete GPU.

After 7500 posts, this thread has come full circle at least a dozen times now. :D

Strange stockholder philosophy you have here. A dGPU would be bad business for Apple? Assuming wall street even cares, I'd say the omission of a dGPU would have more of a negative impact on your portfolio than any savings Apple might realize by eliminating Nvidia and increasing margins. The markets are fickle and thrive on bad news. Sorry. just can't picture the tech analysts doing cartwheels over this decision if it happens.

There was a time when I though the dGPU was a goner but the more I skim this thread the more convinced I am it will stay. They took it out of the MBP13 but there were still 2 more models to trade up to at the time but now... a full laptop lineup with only iGPU's just sounds downright ludicrous.

Don't keep your hopes up. Apple added 128GB as an option for the iPad 4. But they added it on the end, for $100 more than the 64GB model, with the base still at 16GB.

Also, I voted.
I remember that, but since they increased the base storage for the MacBook Air, I thought they would also increase the base size of the SSD in the retina MacBook Pro.

Argh

This is just insane. MBP months behind the Air. Should have really got the Air when it first came out. Problem is I might regret any decision I take right now.

If I buy the Air, new MBP might just be round the corner.
If I buy the older rMBP, same might happen.
If I wait longer, refresh might be another 3 or 4 months ahead. Maybe more, who knows maybe rMBP will be the new Mac Pro.

My current MBP is taking its last breaths Apple, where the **** is my refresh. At least leak something you incompetent *******s.

I think that it is almost guaranteed to be released by end of October...

That being said, you can find some pretty great deals on ivy bridge rMBP. And the main difference between the 15.4'' rMBP ivy & haswell should really only be battery life... there should be very similar computing power between the two. Currently, it shouldn't be too hard to find the 15.4'' rMBP (2.7 i7, 16gb, 512gb) brand new on craigslist (at least in SoCal) for ~ $2000 (that is almost $800 savings after tax)... so if battery life greater than 7 hours is not as important to you, then that might be worth looking into. Another way to put it - is an extra 4 hours of battery life (and other minor improvements) worth $800?

But in the end, waiting for haswell release probably your best bet, because that will only drive down ivy bridge prices further.

Now that the iOS nerd-gasm has passed... I'm sure the MR staff is diligently sifting through all the Mac leaks as we speak. One should hit the front page any minute now.

LOL! :D

Why do you believe that integrated graphics won't work in clamshell mode? I'll wager you haven't tried it with a Haswell MBP.

No chance for DDR4 in a laptop this year. PCIe SDD is a virtual certainty because the MBA already has it.

Most Wall Street analysts don't understand much beyond or see much beyond the financial statements, so of course they wouldn't care. I would sell because Iris Pro 5200 plus a discrete GPU would evidence that Apple is being run by idiots.

Emmmmm.... We are paying customers?

I was going to comment on how the brand Apple has atleast a responsibility to people who are depending on them etc, but then I thought about it from Apple's POV.

They are the ones who want to get this out the door more than ANYONE of us here. They would present it to us on a silver platter today if they had it ready. Every day they delay is some money lost. Tim Cook must be losing his hair. Apple themselves stand to lose the most from the delay.

So take solace in the fact that we can be assured they are working as hard as they can and are not holding out on us or something.
