So, for school, (photoshop, illustration, cinema 4d, some final cut pro X) should I get the 15", or the 13"?

15 for power but 13 for mobility i guess? :D

I also might want to use external monitor, will the graphicscard make that better in the 15?

Not to contradict VanillaCracker, but those are all pretty "graphicky" applications you'll be using. In your case, getting the 15" would be worth it for screen real estate alone. The fact that the 15" will presumably come with a more powerful GPU than the 13" is icing on the cake.

I also don't find the 15" particularly big or heavy at all, but I'm coming from a 17" MBP so I suppose it's all relative. ;)

I made the mistake of spending time with the 15" rMBP when I was returning my Air. I was set on the 13" for portability reasons until, after holding both, I realized that they both seemed incredibly light compared to my 17". Both very usable in-hand, at least for me (this means holding the machine with one arm while using it with the other hand).

In other words, they're both pretty portable in terms of weight. The size difference is what you might want to look at; the 15" takes up a lot more space in a bag or very small surface (those fold-out university lecture hall desks are a common issue with larger laptops, for example).

APPLE STORE APP IS DOWN!!!!!!! Is this it, guys?

If so, incredibly prefect timing as my MBP's SATA cable is giving up the ghost yet again for the third time in a week.

I actually discovered this by trying to see what Genius Bar appointments were available this week. Here's hoping it might be a personal setup appointment instead!

The Apple Store website is not down. Not a chance they're updating it. I think it's just app backend maintenance.

In the future, just sign up for Tweet notifications from https://twitter.com/IsTheStoreDown and get a notification the minute the store is down (and up) :D

Since I'm looking around for an application to run a windows program on OSX (basic program, not games or 3D) , help me.
It's better parallels or VMWfusion on a Retina Mac? Moreover since the program (scientific workplace) is pretty old, is better to install XP (lighter, less space on disk required) or windows 7?

Ideally (but I don't know if possibile) I want an app such that I don't even have to see the windows desktop.
Just click on my windows program icon directly from OSX and this application (using a virtual machine) let me work with scientific workplace.

There are two programs I know of that will do just that: Wine and Crossover.

Wine is free, but can be a pain to use.

Crossover will run you about $60, but is easier to use and supports more programs.

Both run windows apps in their own window, as if it's a mac app. I'd do some research into both and see which (if either) fit your needs. Wine's free and you can get a 30-day trial of crossover, so you can't lose.:)

Whats the significance of September 24th that everyone keeps pin pointing at a silent release or announcement?? I must have missed the post

September 24th is the first Tuesday following the date on which Macs purchased during the back-to-school promotion can no longer be returned.

Can't imagine the new mbps being released the day after BTS return window. A bit too close. Have they done that in the past?

I've experienced slight bugginess with external displays under some applications with both. I will say both of those are light and highly mobile. In either case I would want a light case if I had to transport the machine on a regular basis. The 15" is around 4 pounds? I've used it. It's not heavy. The 13" is around 3 or something like that. I haven't compared displays. If you're set on the 13", you are best off testing it during the return period. This assumes that you buy it directly from Apple. For third party resellers, consult their individual return/exchange policies. This is what I would tell anyone when the question is a matter of is "x" good enough"? You don't really know until you test it. The rmbp hasn't received a true 2013 update. They switched a couple part numbers in the spring, but it was more of a .1 type of update. I would have to check, but the Haswell gpu should support at least OpenCL 1.2.

Graphicky doesn't really mean anything, and you're technically incorrect on gpus. It's one of the most common errors on the site equating graphics software to strenuous graphics card use. Cinema4D can bog down with high polygon counts or if animating where you want to maintain a certain minimum framerate. It's drawn in OpenGL. Given that he's using a notebook either way, I'm not really sure whether he would see a true advantage. I like the 15" for quad cpus and ram. The gpu is better, but do not attribute extra non-existent advantages to it. Sometimes little functions in a given application are rewritten to cuda or opencl. That doesn't make the entire application highly gpu dependent, and there's no way to quantify what could be done on one but not another without some identification of workload. The best way method is to order what you want directly and thoroughly test it within the return period in case you really did order the wrong thing.

Thanks for the technical clarification, thekev.

Sorry if I seemed to be furthering common misconceptions in my post, but please note that my primary reason for recommending the 15" for this user was for the additional screen real estate, and that I referred to the more powerful GPU simply as "icing on the cake" for his intended uses.

I don't see how one would construe any technical inaccuracies in the sentence: "The fact that the 15" will presumably come with a more powerful GPU than the 13" is icing on the cake."

23% OFF June 2012 retina model?

This is from Apple.ca site in Refurbished section (attached).
23% OFF the June 2012 retina model? wow. something is brewing :)
