A 13-inch retina MacBook Pro with an education discount shouldn't cost 2000$ in North America.

Maybe they aren't in North America. But yeah, you'd only approach 2K on a 13-inch rMBP in NA if you're customizing.

I'm in the US.

Customized with the 256gb SSD. I was also including AppleCare and sales tax (8.85%...). If I can wait until thanksgiving I could have it shipped to my parents where sales tax is only 6%.

He found a good deal and he took it, and it came with 512GB. I stand by my point, though. That 128GB is not enough.

depends. i have google all access so i dont have any music stored locally, i have a 4TB raid 1 nas which i keep all my movies on. so what else would i actually put on my laptop? just programs, and cs:go/dota2, the rest of the games i have on my gaming desktop

so it all depends on use-case which will change from person to person

Ah, got it. I know for me, a maxed out 13-inch only comes out to nearly $2600. That's with discount and not including AppleCare.

High taxes suck.

My point is that any user will need to leave room for the SSD to run well. And after storing some programs/data, I think most people aren't generally comfortable with having 128GB. So 256 is a more suitable option for most. But you're right, I'm sure many people have bought the 128GB rMBP. Hell, look how long the 64GB MBA stayed around for.

Not exactly. There's a reason why Apple doesn't even sell 64GB SSDs anymore.. the bare minimum requirements only increase over the years. PDFierro is just making the case that 128GB as a bare minimum is on it's way out.

Remember when a 1GB iPod was more than anybody could ever need?

I think 128GB is on its way out much like 16GB is for iOS devices.

yup i do agree 256gb should be the minimum on a laptop - as it will be the smallest that is comfortable to most users

Yup - I have a 16GB iPhone, I don't store music or movies on it, and let's just say I'll never get less than 32GB again.

Yep. Neither will I. Strange thing is, I got a 16Gb iPhone 3GS and I didn't learn from that. My music library only fits because I convert everything to 128kbit. :(

So for the rMBP, I'm going to go one step over than what I need so I'll get the 512GB rather than the 256. It's more expensive now but I know I will need it later on.

Same here. Buying the 16GB was a rookie mistake, plain and simple, and I'm sure it has been the reason many people have upgraded sooner rather than later.

My brand new 64 gig iPhone 5s only has 7 gigs of free space on it:(

This is why I still hang onto my 80gb iPod Classic ;)

And I really wish they would increase the bar in the rMBP to 256gb so I don't have to pay for upgrades! Lol

Preach it!

Just curious, for those that know about comparable Haswell PC laptops being released now, what is the standard base config for SSD space? Is it 128 or is it moving up?

91, and I consider myself a 90s kid ;). My philosophy is if you can remember at least half of the decade.

Shoot, 99 won't count for me.:D

Well in Ontario, sales tax is 13%.

What are the chances of a 1TB BTO option under $300 on the top rMBP? I have a 750GB HD now and I'd love an upgrade in space as well as speed.

The latest iMac pricing should be a good indicator of what to expect. There's a $500 premium between 512GB and 1TB, and no 768GB option.

I guess I could see that happening on the rMBP. Especially if Apple wants to simplify the options.

Was the pricing similar before the iMac updates? I forgot what it was like, but I would think it would have been different.

Yes. This This This. I have always very unsatisfied with the speakers on my various MBPs. But I was at the Apple Store, and I positioned the cMBP alongside the rMBP, and played identical music vids (Stones Gimmie Shelter). On the CMBP I could barely hear it as the Apple Store is always a madhouse, on the rMBP it was cranking. People actually asked me to turn it down. Now I understand that we lost a little bass, but man, that thing is LOUD

That's awesome. I'm someone who always thought the MBA speakers were good enough, but my first thought upon playing sound on the 13-inch rMBP was that they were really good for a 13-inch laptop.
