im ready for disappointment tomorrow

a ) no silent update

b) no invites

c) wait another week for good or bad news

I think the waiting will be longer.

With the upcoming IGZO display hysteria and the never ending delay of Intel's Thunderbolt2, my guess is that Apple decided to push the release back to spring 2014.

Aactually, the current models are not that bad. What's the point of just a pure CPU refresh. There has to be more, so it's better to wait for an early-mid 2014 model.

i think macrumors will have a meltdown or at least this thread if there is no release till mid 2014 :(

See if a USB audio interface solves your problems.

A few minutes of googling found this one for $30 http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/UCA222/ but there are many other options.

The built-in audio in working macbooks is pretty good, so I don't always carry one in my laptop bag anymore, unless I'm sure I'm going to be doing some audio mixing or editing, or recording. But back when I had windows laptops I always carried one because the quality was so much better than the built-in audio, even if the latter was functioning.

You would probably want an external speaker too. Well, of course you want an external speaker, the speakers in laptops are all crap for any editing or serious work. If you get a bluetooth speaker you should be able to use it via the bluetooth audio profile, without your USB audio interface and without relying on any of the parts that are likely broken in your laptop.

Thanks. I'll have a look at this. This could help me out for some time.

Or you could see about getting your existing machine fixed. Even if you want to buy a new machine, you should still consider fixing your old machine for resale purposes.

If a USB audio interface and bluetooth speakers don't work with your laptop, I'm guessing it's a software problem, not a hardware problem. You might try a reinstall after a backup, and see if it solves your problem. (Note: I never "try a reinstall" because I'm an old OS hack and I'd rather learn about what's going on by trying to fix it. But if you're not an old OS hack it's a worthwhile experiment, at least: if the reinstall fixes your issue it probably means your hardware is fine.)

It's definitely a hardware problem, confirmed by the Genius at the Apple Store. The logic board needs be replaced in order to fix it, which will cost me around $600. The machine is from 2008 and second-handed. I think it isn't worth a repair anymore. I'm very impressed by the weight and the thin design of the Retina MacBook Pro and the display is just gorgeous! This 2008-machine is becoming slow. It can hardly run Adobe CS6. And I just want something new :D

Apple can't come up with a Haswell-based machine in 2014. They are already behind the competition. Haswell will be outdated around mid 2014, when all eyes go to Broadwell.

I'm also looking forward to the MacPro event (assuming there is any "event"!), as I expect to see the Thunderbolt Display (TB2) announced along with the new MacPro.

Why? Because I would really like to be able to match up my new rMBP with a "retina"-like Thunderbolt display (i.e., a 4K display), and Sharp's display of a 32" IGZO 4K display running OSX gives me hope that a ~27"-30" 4K TB2 display may be more "doable" in the near-term than I previously thought.

I think there is a fix for that sound problem. Reset the pram or something. Check the apple support forum.

There is a tiny switch stuck in the headphone port. When I play any sort of sound, a red light shines out of my headphone port, which means that the Digital Outpot is triggered. I've tried a lot of things already, sticked a lot of things in there, but nothing worked. Only way to fix it is to replace the logic board.

I have been patiently waiting for the new macbook pros to be released. It seems that its quite possible the will coming out mid 2014... I dont really feel like waiting.

I have a few questions.. I use photoshop mainly for my work, I sometimes have 50+ layers that I am working with. adding lighting effects can slow my 2010 17" tremendously. my question is how capable is the lower end retina macbook pro? I am sure it can run circles around my 2010 model. I have always been on macs. are there any pc laptops that can compare to the macbook pros?

i doubt apple would go a holiday season without slightly updating hteir macbook pro and if the update was silent, i truly believe apple should've done it already because they missed out on back to school season

Pushing the release back to spring would leave a 6 month gap. What I would expect is there to be a release in October, THEN a small refresh (such as TB2) in spring.

The current models are very good, but consumers are always wanting more and more updates (such as this huge thread). So Apple must satisfy us..

For Apple to continue offering Ivy Bridge into 2014 just makes no sense. They already moved the MacBook Air and iMac. Intel will likely be winding down Ivy Bridge mobile chip production by early next year.

I'm pretty confident the new MacBook Pro's with Haswell processors will be announced this October.

I have to say I find it funny how some people still think there won't be a MacBook Pro release until next year. Apple is not dumb. They want to have all the stock current ready for the holidays.

Definitely having the same thoughts when it comes to having Ivy Bridge models all the way to 2014, especially when MBA and iMacs have seen recent updates. Would only seem fair for rMPBS to get that update...

They definitely won't wait. There are way too many cMBPs on my campus. I've seen only a handful of rMBPs and even MBAs.

If they do update, that doesn't mean there will be more rMBP's. The price is the main deterrent.
Most students need a PC because they need word, PDF editor etc.
Students that are power users (small amount..me) are the ones that have the need to use a higher power PC.

I find it disheartening that we have heard nothing about invitations going out tomorrow. In the past, by late afternoon on the day before invites go out, there is buzz about them. Not a good sign…

Again, what's wrong with the current MacBooks? Apple can perfectly fine sell those during the holiday season. The haswell refresh won't be a big deal breaker- It might even be a huge setback due to lack of a dedicated GPU.

Let's face it, for the average consumer, who buys during a holiday season, it doesn't really matter that much whether there is an ivy bridge or haswell inside. The average consumer buys a rMBP solely because of prestige reasons.

For browsing Facebook and YouTube even 2011 models are perfectly fine. Even for everything "super-mega-professional", like adjusting some RAW values in Photoshop and/or Lightroom.

I'm surprised how well marketing works on so many people.

Comments like "OMG! Next week I'll start college, will be studying computer science... Oh, dear, I urgently need a quantum computer in my backpack for my very first three lines of the 'Hello World' code..." make me question the scholastic ability of such folks.

The latest and greatest rMBP won't learn and write exams for you, you will! And all the other crying babies here with their ueberPRO skills also need to sit back and face reality!

10k+ posts thread is already a meltdown (of sanity)!

Clearly you've never programmed in MS Visual Basic. You need a quantum computer just to print "Hello World".

So now its "disheartening" that there is no invite a day b4 the invites? Lets not get to crazy on here.

Exactly. At the bare minimum, Apple will do a silent MBP refresh a la the Haswell iMac before the holidays.

There's no possible way they would delay this to 2014 unless Intel can't meet production demands on Haswell processors--which, based on Dell's recent announcements, does not appear to be the case.

That blog post means nothing. It was obviously a slow day in news for apple insider. The productivity in an iPad is limited to what iOS can do and it doesn't compare to all the things you can do in a laptop yet. There's still a demand for laptops and apple knows that. This is the glory age for iPhones and iPads therefore there's more attention for those gadgets but laptops are still needed and are profitable. Apple will keep up.

Take a deep breath.
Sure Apple could probably continue to sell the Ivy Bridge to the people who aren't following tech news. And maybe even some of us here will buy the next rMBP only to go on Yt and Facebook but frankly who cares? It's their money let them buy the things they want.
I am studying computer science and I'd like to work with the good tools and do some gaming too but I know my computer won't solve world hanger, AIDS and global warming.

Shall we move on? :)

Just reading this post was painful for me. Guess this means I'm officially nuts now lol

Wow, this thread got crazy didn't it?

Here, let me try:
Yes, I totally agree that Apple will release a Haswell rMBP refresh in the middle of 2014, 3 months before Broadwell's wide notebook release. And that they'll update the iMac in fall 2013 but leave the MBP line untouched. Those are perfectly sensible options and this thread isn't being trolled at all.

Edit: By the way, let's all play spot the troll. I won't say who it is, but it shouldn't be hard to figure out.

If apple releases a new rMBP, how long is it between the apple store release and when it's usually up for sale on Macmall or B&H type websites?

So if the new rMPB haswell wont be announced in october, can you with certainty say that it wont be this year, so I can go and buy the current with a clear mind?
