Anyone here with experience with the use of MBP and Apple TV? I'm interested in buying one if I can easely stream music and movies to my TV and audio set.
Maybe a bit off topic, but what the heck, after almost 12000 post we have to talk about something…

Yeah, i stream from my iMac (same thing). But I use Beamer for movie files and it's awesome (beamer uses the apple TV) . Streaming music isn't a problem. Full mirroring streaming via youtube seems to work well for my wife when she practices belly dancing via her iPad with airplay.

Hope that helps even though it's off topic. The new MBP with the better wifi should be great for this I'm guessing. There we go... back on topic.

It is just more speculation, but I think we are 100 percent going to see new rMBPs on the 22nd.

I will be stunned if we don't get any news about rMBPs at the event.

Don't listen to the trolls saying it will be more likely to come next year than at this event.

Oh hey buddy, I've worked 6 films in Bulgaria, and I've worked in Poland, Prague and Spain, so I'm well versed in how much better your beer is than ours. I once did a 7 month stint and when I got back home it tasted like I was drinking sparkling water. But that's Ok, we have better sports and our Apple products are much cheaper

I don't see why so many people are "nervous" that new MBPs wont be released at the event on the 22nd. Mavericks, Mac Pro (due to the redesign) and of course iPad are the headliners. Apple is not going to dedicate a lot of time to MBPs updated with the newest tech. If they underwent a huge redesign, then maybe. Given the news about mac sales, there will no doubt be an updated on the 22nd

I agree. I've always liked the sleek vibrant look of the glossy display. And forget about the Ehernet port, which I need. The body of the retina can not accommodate an Ethernet port. I haven't heard anything about Apple looking for ways to make the laptops bigger or heavier;)

Yeah, anti-glare displays just look dull in comparison. I think we've reached a point where Ethernet ports just aren't used by consumers anymore. 99% of the time, people use their laptops away from somewhere with an Ethernet connection. Laptops are portable devices, and it only makes sense for them to use a wireless method of connecting to the internet.

I don't like the design of anti-glare screens either.
I'm going to have a 1Gbps/200Mbps broadband (thanks to Fiber optics <3) so I'll have to buy a 802.11ac router or that thunderbolt to ethernet dongle. It would have been much more convenient with a ethernet port OOTB.

Is there some small tiny possibility they introduce a macbook air with retina display at a price level around 1300? Of course it will not replace existing (and just updated) MBA, but it will complement them.

I wouldn't buy a new Apple TV before the 22nd, as Apple has also been rumoured to be unveiling a 4th generation Apple TV at the event alongside the new iPads. Perhaps we'll see an Apple TV App Store, turning the Apple TV into a gaming console competitor.

Well, I'm still using a single band 802.11n Wi-Fi router, and I'm fine, but I'll probably buy a simultaneous dual-band 802.11ac router soon. You're part of the minority of laptop users who require an Ethernet port. I'm not famiar with the acronym OOTB, what does it stand for?

Haha majority of the 12,000 posts are probably off-topic ;)

Anyhow to answer your question: I have an Apple TV 3rd Gen and it works seamlessly for what you have asked!
Basically their is an Apple feature coined 'AirPlay' which will allow you to play Music, Videos and Photos from your Mac or even iOS devices. It also allows for 'Mirroring' which as name implies, mirrors your screen onto the TV.
For your Audio set, it should play through it depending on your configuration, you may need to do some fiddling if not.

It works so simple and will definitely impress you if you are a first time user. To make it all even better, with Mavericks it will add more functionality for the Mac! It will be adding the function to use it as a dual-screen, meaning what is mirrored on the TV will be completely different to your Mac.

At this event, on the 22nd of the month? No chance at all. There is already so much stuff for this event. And a MBA with Retina display would be a big thing. 0% chance. Maybe in 2014.

I wouldn't say that Ethernet use is 1% of consumers...

Anyone getting a laptop for work use will probably use the Eth port at some point, its faster and generally more reliable, and a lot of places don't have wifi...

But for home networks I agree, its pretty niche use unless you are doing a lot of file transfers / have a NAS etc...

What speeds can you get through a USB3.0 eth adapter?

Well I meant 1% of the tine you use your laptop, you'll use the Ethernet port. With the popularisation of bringing your own device to work, I would assume most businesses would have some sort if company Wi-Fi network in place. I pretty sure Apple offers a Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet adapter, so ypur speeds should be pretty good using that. I've never seen nor used an USB 3.0 to Ethernet adapter, so I can't comment on that.

I've heard enough. Shut up and take my money! ;)

The few leaks we have seen so far point toward no redesign. It seems logical to have only benchmark leaks when the update is all internal. The TB2 connector is aestheticly similar to the old one, no new chassis required. To be frank, I don't understand people who are waiting for a redesign. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If they do the following:

- Haswell + Iris (Pro)
- 802.11ac
- PCIe SSD
- 1080p Facetime
- Thunderbolt 2

In the current package, I would be very happy. IGZO would be cherry on the cake. A lack of TB2 would piss me off after waiting this long however. Doesn't make sense to announce a Mac Pro with TB2 and launch a MBP with TB1. I think that retaining the current case also indicates the MBP will follow the iMac in offering a entry 15 with Iris Pro and a dGPU option. A redesign would be in favor of the iGPU camp. All the space that opens up by eliminating the dGPU could make the 15 thinner, and people already find it remarkably thin.

Some small companys here in holland have been shipping Iris Pro notebooks for more than a month now.

Correct! This also uses the Clevo W740SU chassis (you can tell by the aesthetics easily), see for instance:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/7182/90-minutes-with-the-clevo-w740su-featuring-iris-pro-hd-5200

right all this 5100 or 5200, IGZO or TB2 is getting boring...

I wanna talk about:

1) number of USB 3 I/O: Ivy bridge could only support 2 USB 3 ports and apple didn't want to have mixture of USB 2 and USB 3 ports on the same device so they were limited to only 2 USB 3 ports which for a pro device is a bit short.

what are the chances of an increase(say to 3 or 4) in te number of USB 3 ports?

2) the infrared ports on legacy macbooks(cmbp):
what are the chances of them making a come back, I assume they don't cost much and don't take much space and I found them really helpful(turning everyone's music on during a lecture with 300 people hehe)

3) with the introduction of finger scanners on the iPhones and probably iPads, chances we might see them on MacBooks as well(apple did release a keychain app for ios7 that got pulled - perhaps to be released with the new MacBooks and iPads?).

many hp laptops have a small 2cm x 0.5 cm strip that scans fingerprints, perhaps apple will something similar with one of the buttons on the keyboard( or reintroduce the separate power button like they had on the cmbp)

this is all just speculation, just want some of your points of views on possibility of these features(because of the wait I assume there will be some new hardware features other than just pci ssd, haswell, 802.11ac)

thanks

1) Agreed it's short, but don't forget Thunderbolt ;)! Like I said earlier, my bet is on using the same chassis which would keep the 2 USB ports.

2) 5% there is a reason (I don't know what) why they discarded it on the Retina, same for the seperate power button

3) The beauty of TouchID on the iPhone is that it's so intuitive to have your finger on the iPhone's button. On the MBP this is not as logical. This will probably remain a feature for the iOS products, but I might be wrong.

I think I'd rather like an extra USB 3.0 (maybe even 3.1 if that's possible already) than an Ethernet port. And I think that Apple won't include it on any future MB. Wifi .ac and next generation wifi standards will serve all the needs of most consumers.

@MrAronT - IME apple TV works better with iOS devices than MacBook Pro - perhaps I'm a numpty but we have found no mirroring for the MBP (so for example you cannot replicate Safari pages aside form YouTube or Vimeo). What will change this is Mavericks - Apple demonstrated how easily you can use the Apple TV to create another monitor screen, not sure about sound though. I love Apple TV (we bought 2) but you can connect MBP to TV via cables (Hdmi and sound) much cheaper but not as powerful of course.

Same here. I would also be happy if the versions with dGPU would also get the Iris Pro and not the 4600, as I would use the iGPU most of the time anyway. The Iris Pro would certainly perform better in scaled retina resolutions than the 4600. In addition, the Iris Pro's GPGPU performance is more important to me than 3D rendering performance.

Out Of The Box! :)

If they do, it won't be until next year at the very earliest. I see that you are undecided between the MBA and the rMBP, but for me it's not even a decision. I would not be able to put up with the screen on the MBA, so I have never swayed from my decision to buy the rMBP.

Yeah, I know. I think they are either being serious or just doing it to drive us crazy.

are there any signs for a redesign of the case?

It just got a case redesign last year. So no.
