Seems as though nearly everyone is awaiting a rMBP. I'm going to be torn tomorrow if either the classic isn't significantly updated or if the 15" rMBP doesn't come with a base config of 512GB SSD.
256GB just isn't enough for me and I really can't justify £500 extra for a 512GB SSD on top of an already expensive machine.

Well both of those are pretty much not going to happen. But the 15-inch rMBP might get a price drop.

Reasons to get Haswell rMBP over Ivy Bridge rMBP:
-AC wifi
-Super fast SSD
-Second iteration of the rMBP: maybe with some of the kinks ironed out.
-Thunderbolt 2 could be useful if they ever release an external GPU ;) (though it is not certain if this will be in the Haswell rMBP or not)

What are some of the kinks that could be ironed out? Thanks!

I agree - having a 256gb as the base ssd size is a joke for a pro machine coming out at the end of 2013. Let's hope Apple agrees with this and bumps up the base size.

One question in preparation for the release:

I've never transferred a Time Machine from one Mac to another, so I could use some clarification. My current HDD is 500gb, but I'm probably only using 150gb, maybe more (can't remember and can't check...). I'm planning to get the 256gb SSD. Is there any need for concern about going from a bigger drive to the smaller one? I know the OS requirements will be different, but that shouldn't be a huge deal, right?

I've restored my current MBP with a Time Machine, so I'm not concerned about the process (assuming Mavericks is the same as SL). Are there any things I shouldn't restore though (settings and the like)? I have this recurring sleep issue that I REALLY don't want transferred. I don't mine resetting defaults once I get everything up and running.

Now I'm wondering if Haswell is even worth it. OK - 5 hours of battery life on 15" rMBP - I currently get 2(on a good day) with my Dell so that's a huge improvement there.

iGPU or dGPU - who cares? I don't even play games and video editing is not my thing.

16GB RAM - I can get that today.

768GB SSD - ditto.

So why spend $3000 on the latest? Granted I've waited 8 months, but this 8 month wait would save me about $700.

Then go get the current rMBP at a discounted price and save yourself some money. I honestly don't look at the wait in terms of money saved, I look at what I'm getting.

That makes no sense. The current model is full price - tomorrow, it will be $700 less. Just throwing it out there.

I know that. But now is not the time for second-guessing. You made it seem like the wait won't have been worth it at all.

I kind of agree. What's unfortunate is that the jump in cost from 256GB to 512GB--even for third party SSDs--is not insignificant.

I think the best we can hope for is to see the price of the BTO 512GB reduced by $50-$100 compared to the previous gen prices.

If Apple are killing the cMBP then I would have thought that a price reduction should follow. The cost of the base 15" RMBP is a little too rich to be the entry level in to the 15" Macbook line.

This made me burst out laughing considering we've all been guessing these past few months.

That was just my way of looking at the bright side - I can say I've wasted all this time waiting OR I saved myself $700 to make it feel ok. All BS anyway - I'm still hoping for good things tomorrow.

Got it. Just didn't sound like you were looking on the bright side at all. My time waiting will not have been wasted, it will have been worth it waiting for an awesome machine.

I preordered the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro, main reason is 3200x1800 screen, tablet convertibility is nice too, i7 8GB, 256GB SSD for the same price as the current Macbook Pro (sic). For delivery 1st November so unless, Apple is gonna blow me away with something incredible, Yoga 2 Pro is my next laptop.

I wouldn't worry too much. I've done two types of restores: a full TM restore during a fresh install, and manually copying over files after the install. As someone who does some tweaking of my system (I love UNIX), I prefer a full TM restore to try to get as many settings and such as possible (they don't all always make it...). I've had great success both ways.

In your case, you could always try the full restore from TM, and if it doesn't work, just open up your backup in Finder and copy over all the stuff you want. In fact, as long as you just stick with stuff in your home folder (Documents, Music, Videos, Downloads, etc), you'd probably be leaving your sleeping problem behind. That's what I'll be doing (going from 500GB HDD and 128GB SSD to whatever the new retina 13" base config has - I'll need to pick and choose what to keep - the rest stays on the external drive)

As long as you don't wipe your backup drive, things can't go *too* wrong.

cant decide if i should go with 256 SSD or 512 SSD the extra cost is  my computer mostly gonna have just the operating system, my music which is around 15GB and my photos 35GB. will also have iWork and iLife but that should not take up too much room. any chance SSD will come down in price enough tomorrow where the price between 256 and 512 wont be so expensive?! i know $300 extra to some people is not that much.

Sounds like 256 would be perfect for you.

Man, that looks terrible.

Yeah I always get as much as I can. You never know what the future holds. I remember thinking... "I will never fill this HUGE 6GB HDD!!"

So I'm hoping for a 1TB SSD option.

Yoga - how clever. Must be Lenovo's way of pointing out how flexible the laptop is. I don't have a need for an acrobatic laptop and I do a fine job with a open-close laptop.

Congrats on the new machine - you clearly like ugly things. :D;):D

.. JK. One of the reasons I chose Apple is it just looks nice.

Thanks! My only other concern will be my MS Office 2011 license, but that may just require calling their tech support :p. Oh joy!

I think it's reasonable to hope that I'll be up and running by the end of the week if I don't have to wait for a BTO to ship :). Here's hoping there's a standard 13" with a 256gb SSD! Doesn't have to be base, just one that can be easily ordered for store pickup!
