This made me burst out laughing considering we've all been guessing these past few months.

That was just my way of looking at the bright side - I can say I've wasted all this time waiting OR I saved myself $700 to make it feel ok. All BS anyway - I'm still hoping for good things tomorrow.

If you look at it in terms of spending $500 to $700 more for a machine that will likely only be 10-13% faster (albeit with better battery life), the early-2013 rMBP is an appealing option for sure. I'm personally gonna wait a few days to see what early reviews reveal about the Haswells before deciding either way.

Thanks! My only other concern will be my MS Office 2011 license, but that may just require calling their tech support :p. Oh joy!

I think it's reasonable to hope that I'll be up and running by the end of the week if I don't have to wait for a BTO to ship :). Here's hoping there's a standard 13" with a 256gb SSD! Doesn't have to be base, just one that can be easily ordered for store pickup!

13" rMBP is the way to go!

cant decide if i should go with 256 SSD or 512 SSD the extra cost is  my computer mostly gonna have just the operating system, my music which is around 15GB and my photos 35GB. will also have iWork and iLife but that should not take up too much room. any chance SSD will come down in price enough tomorrow where the price between 256 and 512 wont be so expensive?! i know $300 extra to some people is not that much.

OMG - 15GB of music? I have a160GB Ipod classic that's filled and I still don't have all my music on it.

the problem is right now i have 768 GB HD so thats a big step down in space but at the same time a peformance improvement going from having a HD to SSD

But what's the point of paying for all that extra storage if you're never going to use it? Unless you can afford it no problem.

You'll definitely be able to get that at the store. Probably the high-end base model. I'm hoping I can receive my BTO 13-inch by the 29th or 30th.

I realize that am not speaking from authority here, but I have a theory that might explain why Apple has missed so many of their deadlines for the new Retina Macbook Pro.

Here are the facts:

  1. Consumers are increasingly using tablets and phones for mobile computing, rather than laptops. Apple has certainly noticed this.
  2. Apple is about to release their new Mac Pro, which is designed for professional use. The Macbook Pro is also designed for professional use, so there's a slight bit of overlap.

Here is the theory: Perhaps Apple is working on new portable solutions for the Mac Pro (e.g. straps, etc.), because they've seen the professional laptop market dwindling? The new Mac Pro is very small and very light, and that can't be an accident.

When people are on the go, they use their phones and tablets (iPhones and iPads). When people are in the office, the use their desktops (Mac Pros).

However, what if they're on a business trip in a conference room? Their phone or tablet just won't cut it for their computing needs. In that situation, Apple might have realized that a lightweight, stylish, portable desktop isn't such a bad option.

Thoughts? Again, this is purely speculation.

I would go for 512 SSD over 256 if it came down in price at least $100. any chances of that happening tomorrow?

To be honest, I'm 99% going the distance with my first mac.

15" rMBP. If 2.8 is the max, I'll go for 2.7. I'll go max CPU-1
16GB RAM or max
768GB SSD or Max
Time Capsule - probably 3TB, but might do 2TB. I found a way to partition TC
iPad - 128GB or max whatever is released
Extra charger
Sleeve for rMBP
display adapter and ethernet adapter - although it's probably wiser to get these from Amazon at a cheaper rate.

Once the apple store is open tomorrow, IT'S ON!!!

Seems as though nearly everyone is awaiting a rMBP. I'm going to be torn tomorrow if either the classic isn't significantly updated or if the 15" rMBP doesn't come with a base config of 512GB SSD.
256GB just isn't enough for me and I really can't justify £500 extra for a 512GB SSD on top of an already expensive machine.

i'm in the same boat. coming from a 2010 MBP 13" with 500GB, i couldn't got back to 256. I'm really tempted to get a Feb '13 model with 16GB memory and 512GB SSD, which will cost a bit less than the cheaper Haswell is likely to be, and probably be a bit faster still.

What would be the reasoning for maxing everything out but the CPU?

So here's where I sit with my dilemma. I've got a i5 8gb 256gb 13" Air and a rMBP 13" 8GB 256GB and I'm waiting for Apple's announcement tomorrow to decide which of these to keep and whether or not to order the new haswell MBP.

I'm 90% sure I'm going to keep my MBA. I'm assuming there's no chance they reduce the weight of the Haswell MBP right?

This question will be answered for you, probably, by Apple in less than 24 hours.

I doubt we'll see more than a $50 price drop (I'll still take it!) on the 512GB upgrade.

I originally was going to settle for the 256GB SSD and upgrade later, but realistically it might be two years before OWC's prices have come down enough to make it worthwhile, so I'm hedging towards just paying the piper up front and avoiding the hassle.

Nope. The 13-inch is rumored to reduce in thickness to match the 15, but you won't notice the difference like that.

To me, the 13-inch rMBP is more than light enough. If I were considering 13-inch models only, then the rMBP clearly wins out over the Air.

Look to Monoprice for any adapters or cables. They're way cheaper there and most work just as well as first-party accessories that cost 3-10x as much.

I'm not sure what you are trying to get at here?

Probably cost/benefit analysis. If there's a .1Ghz difference between the CPUs, would probably be better off putting that money elsewhere (memory or SSD)

I hate to stay this, but it seems like the new MacBook Pros with be purely spec bumps with no real meaningful new features (sure, we can quibble about graphics and battery life). Even Thunderbolt 2 is a "maybe." I know I've been waiting more than a year for this one product, but I find myself looking more and more at other products and platforms...

I preordered the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro, main reason is 3200x1800 screen, tablet convertibility is nice too, i7 8GB, 256GB SSD for the same price as the current Macbook Pro (sic). For delivery 1st November so unless, Apple is gonna blow me away with something incredible, Yoga 2 Pro is my next laptop.

I could also order a Yoga

if it would run Mac OS X. No way otherwise!
You must be kidding!

I will do the same thing -- an extra $100-$300 for 0.1GHz gain I'll never see makes no sense to me.

I agree, but it seemed like the poster was talking about specifically wanting to get the 2nd-best CPU.

We'll have to wait to see how Apple plays the processor options.

What would be the reasoning for maxing everything out but the CPU?

Whether it's choosing between 2.7 and 2.8 or 2.8 and 2.9, the difference is not noticeable except in the wallet. Unlike RAM where I can go from 8 to 16GB or SSD from 512 to 768.

There isn't even another choice for me. Unless Apple magically announced a 3rd line of laptops tomorrow.

The (former) prediction re: slimming down the 13" rMBP called for a 1mm reduction in thickness, which would probably shave a couple of grams off the weight.

Unless you're planning on running marathons with your rMBP strapped to your back, this unlikely change in chassis won't do much for you.
