The $1299 for 13" rmbp is not really a price drop. They'll charge at least $100 for the RAM upgrade. Most people will want 256 GB flash storage which again will cost an extra $300. $1799 for a pretty "basic" configuration, which will either:

1. Push people to get the Macbook Air
2. Push people to get the 15" rmbp which will seem like a bargain

But as Craig said, 4GB RAM with Mavericks is like having 6GB. However, it doesn't sound like much, but I doubt the normal user will even care about it. 90% of Apple's users don't care about it. It just works like it should. "What is RAM?"

You're wrong. It's an option on the 15" model: Nvidia 750. The base 15" model won't have it though, the 13" never did.

Enjoy windows 8.

Yeah I just saw it, my bad.

And yes I am enjoying windows 8, it's not a bad OS at all.

Apple does offer $200 off for students. So for us, it starts at $1799, a great price.
Err, was that announced? It's been $200, but the discounts often scale based on the price and the profit. If it is $1799 when the store comes up, then yes, I agree that'll be a pretty good deal—especially if you aren't getting reamed with sales tax.

Can someone explain the benefit of iGPU over discrete, please?

dGPU is really only worth it for gaming. And iGPU would consume less battery. I personally would not even consider a dGPU.

Except that's not true. We've been over this, too. Power consumption on the Iris Pro iGPU really isn't better than what we had before. There is no "benefit" from iGPU—at least not today. The previous generation's HD4000+650M will do a better job on average than the Iris Pro for all but a couple small tasks, and it will kill the Iris Pro on things like games.

John you're being a party pooper. For those that don't have any type of laptop, the new 15" is pretty great.

Sure it's marginal in a few aspects over last gen, but still, for those that don't have anything (like me) the new one is the one I'm getting.

Apple has never announced (at least, I don't think so) the $200 off for students but it's always there. Like when the iMac updated, I saw everythin $200 off. This is only possible if you're looking at the Education Store.

Sales tax was around $200 for a $3000 system. If the student discount is available today, then I'm essentially getting a system for $200 less than I expected to get.

We'll see if that holds true with the new config options. Don't screw me, Apple.

Yes, I know the pricing. My point is that it's not always been "$200." When we've seen price drops in the past, we've also seen that discount trimmed.

So you're saying get the option with dGPU?
