Congrats! Is there a real benefit in the dual core i7 over the i5, other than higher frequency?

Caching is improved, but that's about it. Even though my uses don't demand i7, I wanted it to get myself the most fully-optimized configuration in my view. I definitely don't need 16GB RAM, but there are some aspects in which the i7 could be noticeable.

I am having second thoughts just on the Iris Pro 5100 alone. I see Apple thinning out the options. I could hope to see a price drop on the old GT 650M 15" notebooks.

Agreed. I plan on updating to the Broadwell rMBP when that comes out anyway. AppleCare was just something I hadn't considered before, but I don't think I'm going for it. I had honestly not even given it a second look before, but all things cross your mind when you make a purchase like this!

[/COLOR]Finally ordered! Glad I took my time, though. Beats the hassle of placing multiple orders.

You are? I guess you'll be joining some of us in the Broadwell thread. The Verge was saying this about the 13-inch:
Where the old model would stutter and lag on web pages and while working with images, the new model's Haswell processor with upgraded Iris graphics was totally smooth. Obviously we didn't get to test it too harshly, but if it holds up when we review it, the 13-inch Pro just reentered the conversation in a big way — especially since the base price is now just $1,299.

Also, still 720p camera's for both? Really?

I was disappointed on that one as well. Better luck next year:D.

Do you think it is possible, that an OpenCL Application on the high end MBPr can run on CPU, iGPU and dGPU? If that is possible... man this would be really speedy ;)

Depending on my situation, yes. Who knows what country I will be in at the time of the Broadwell rMBP release. But if I can get it for the same price as what I just paid, then hell yeah.

And yup, the 13-inch definitely received the biggest upgrades today.

Just ordered! Very excited. Macbook Pro 13" Retina i5 2.4ghz/8gb/256gb.

I live in Vancouver, BC. Do you guys know how long it usually takes to deliver? It says estimated to delivery by 30th Oct. or 29th expedited. Says "Ships out in 24 hrs"

I bought the mid model thinking it would get here faster than the 128gb/8gb custom model. Same estimate.

So with the base 15 having the iris pro taking memory from ram, it it sufficient with 8gb or do you need 16?

For photoshop, some league of legends, some video editing.

I.e I dont want to get 8 and regret it, and I dont want 16 if I use say only 8 anyway :p

I've managed to max out 8GB of RAM on my MBP working with some very high-res scans in Photoshop. This is not a daily occurrence, but it's happened more than once.

My logic is this: what are the odds that applications are going to get LESS resource-hungry in the future?

As the story goes, you won't miss those $200 (or whatever) in two months, but there's definitely a chance you might come to regret not having enough RAM in your MacBook in a couple of years...

Moreover, I had 8GB RAM in my 2010 machine, and this is meant to be an upgrade, so for me there's not much debate.

The quote you had on the verge definitely addresses mavericks improvements, not to be confused with stronger graphics.

Yeah, the 720p camera is a joke. I love apple, but that's pathetic.

Placed my order for a 2.3GHz/16GB/512GB/Iris Pro/750M at work. With my EPP discount it was just short of $2600 after tax and shipping. I opted for the 2-3 day shipping for $15. Shame Apple didn't offer FedEx overnight... I probably would have paid $80 for that if it really came down to it.

To compare... my late-2008 unibody MBP (2.4GHz/4GB/250GB HDD/9400M/9600M GT) cost $2200 after tax (without EPP discount). 5 years later, after discount I spent just $400 more for an amazing display, quadruple the RAM (and faster), double the storage (which is now PCI-E), and a much faster/more efficient CPU, integrated GPU and discrete GPU. AND a slimmer body with over 2x the battery life. Worth it? Hell yeah. I'm going to be working from home on Monday to receive it... and I can almost guarantee I'll be getting 0 work done once it arrives. :D

Well, you made it clearer for me, thank you sir!
I think I will get the basemodell 15" with 16 GB RAM, do they hold these in stores or is this BTO only?

so, who's disappointed by the update? and who think that this update satisfies all the needs of this thread? and who thinks that's impossible:p? who's surprised about the update? And lastly, who's just happy it finally came?

me me me me me

Score! The new rMBPs are available for employee discount. Now I just have to decide if I want to order or wait and see if the stores get them :D

Can i be your friend? :)

I kind of feel bad for the person whose friend worked for Apple until 10/18 - he thought that was a good quit date because he would not have qualified for the discount.

Get Applecare later! (Hint: it's cheaper from B&H Photo.)

I got mine for $239.

Well, I'm considering leaving Apple after this update. Even though my work pays for desktop, laptop and cell (and maybe a tablet if I have been a good boy), I can't seem to get a horizontal integration with these updates. At home I need a good GPU (Mac Pro is not ideal for my uses), and when being mobile I need something more powerful than an average Iris (5100, and 15" is not mobile, if you believe so, you don't have any mobile needs ). Besides, it defeats the purpose if I get a non apple device e.g. a laptop, then I can just get non Apple devices all over and have a better total experience as the integration would be better. So, I need a desktop, laptop and a cell. And I'm struggling with finding any solutions that Apple can provide

Any thoughts?

Leave your iDevices with me on your way out.

Ingrate!:D

Hi everyone

I plan to buy my first Mac and I think I'm gonna buy the MBPr 13" with a 256GB SSD I5.

I will use it for :
- watching streaming video
- coding (PHP, C++, C# in a virtual machine)
- virtual machine (Windows 7 / Linux / Windows server but not all at the same time)
- After effect / FCP Pro (occasionally).

I don't know if it's useful to get the 16GB RAM upgrade for my usage.

Any advice ?

perfect

this new MacBook Pro is an absolutely perfect machine for me, a beefed up air with a much more beatiful screen, all for 200g more. Awesome

Why isn't anyone getting 1TB ssd? My current laptop is 500GB HDD and I only have 12GBs free.

It's pretty weird. I would have bet my house on the new laptops having 1080p camera as standard.

I guess they're saving this feature for the February refresh, in addition to the customary 0.1 GHz CPU bump.

I was wondering that also, and found this:
Though Snow Leopard doesn't seem to enable dual GPUs or on-the-fly GPU switching for machines using the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M chipset—a limitation carried over from Leopard—it does appear that the OS can use both as OpenCL resources simultaneously.

So I'm hopeful it could work like that even though the iGPU is Intel and dGPU is Nvidia. We will soon find out :) Just check out Anandtech in a few days.

PS. Ordered the 15" 2.3 dGPU model just to be future proof, even though I don't currently use any GPU intensive applications.

A few years ago, I definitely would have used that much storage. But now with iCloud, I don't need to.

Also, the past few weeks I REALLY thought about my storage needs. I determined 256GB was the sweet spot for me.

And many people are unwilling to pay the high price that a 1TB SSD carries. I think SSDs + the cloud are changing the ways we think about and use our storage.

Guys, your help would be appreciated: Does anyone know where it says precisely which Iris is in the 13"?

I know we think it's the 5100 but I can't find anything that supports this...

There is only one Iris. Iris Pro is 5200. That's it for the "Iris" branded Intel iGPU's

I dunno, they seem to be clueless if you call and ask them. Some guys have been told it could be tomorrow though.

Heh that figures. I was contemplating canceling my order online but it's too late anyway. So according to Murphy's law they will be in tomorrow!

Good to know. If that is really possible, I wonder how the first Benchmarks between CUDA and OpenCL are.

I also ordered the rMBP with GPU, but with the 2.6 Ghz CPU. Just to be future proof ;)
