Like all the experts saying a Iris Pro + dGPU would be so crazy expensive Apple would never do it...

I wonder what Apple's profit margins are on the one. I would bet that it's lower than the rest of the 15-inch lineup.

I'm quite curious as well. Although given that the current price points highly incentivize getting the top 15" w/ dGPU it's rather unclear. It does appear that Apple was able to use their buying power to get the Iris Pro chips at a much lower cost than previously thought (assuming they are still keeping their same profit margins which I highly suspect). I wonder also if Apple received an additional/prorated discount given that the chips appear (at least from early reviews such as the base 21" iMac) to be somewhat underpowered from Intel's initial claims.

why did u go from 13" to 15"?
im still hesitant to wich to buy. is 15 too big too carry along all the time?
once im at my place i have room enough too sit tho

i wanted more processing and rendering perf, the 13" form factor would be my preference but wanted to see how a quad core CU and Nvidia 750 would help my workflow. If the 13" came with iris pro 5200 I'd have probably sucked it up but sadly it didnt. Ill pick up a 13" next week to benchmark too probably.....

physically, the 15 is slighly heavier but compared to the rest of the junk in my pack its negligible. Ill benchmark it once I have it configured....

Wow nearly 15k..on friday i'll resign and move since i'll be typing with the new rMBP (hopefully) :D

Ordered

I ordered the 13" 2.6/8/512 and set it to be delivered to a local Apple store. Its one of the default configurations but my local Apple Stores (Portland OR area) don't have them yet. I'm hoping it will show up there in the next day or two when they get their shipments, instead of the 30th, as the order specified.

My reasoning for this configuration is as follows:

I'm a developer, but my day job is Silverlight and Windows Development. I want to work on some iOS personal projects. I do have a 15" retina from last year which my job has assigned me, but I wanted my own machine for my personal projects and I have grown to LOVE that 15" retina! I chose the 13 because I like the form factor and weight better. I chose 8gb of ram because I doubt I'll ever have more than one VM at a time going, so I just don't think its worth another $200 to get 8 more gigs or ram (also, I ****ing hate how Apple gouges on RAM). I chose the 512 because I will also use the machine to travel and I want to have a lot of media on there so I don't have to pick and choose what to bring. Also, I do a lot of photography, and will have Lightroom on the machine, and a potentially large photo collection (my camera shoots 36mp images which are huge).

So, I think this machine hits all my needs. Also, I got a nice discount from work on it (~$100 off).

Looking forward to getting it!

Fun thread, especially now.

I ordered a 15 with 2.3, 512, 16gig and no dGPU. The 16gig is overkill I'm sure but **** happens.

I decided no dGPU (even though it costs the same freakin' price - WTH Apple?) because my 2009 17" has manual GPU switching and unless I was doing FCP editing I always kept it turned off for battery life and heat as I believe that heat is a massive killer of internal parts in a computer.

I only do very basic video editing now and don't play games at all on my computer, so I really think the extra battery, cooler and quieter computer will suit my usage needs better at this point.

Although I must say 244,000 yen (2,500) bucks is a bit steep.

I'm going to give my 2009 17" to a friend in exchange for using his car for the few weeks each time I go back home. Really happy that no money will exchange hands.

first post in this thread, just to say that it's well worth the wait

(wow screenshots come out huge on retinas)

Quick question for you if you don't mind. Do you plan to use Lightroom on the 13" screen, or do you use an external display for post processing?

didn't expect to have mine today. Beyond stoked. Purchased at my local best buy in orange county.

Nice! So 1GB RAM on Intel Iris as well. Some people noticed that under Mavericks, the HD 4000 went from 512 to 1024.

Can't wait to post my About this Mac screenshot.

That's cool. I went with the same config.

How do you like it so far?

It's also interesting to see Apple still using the Tiger default wallpaper. :)
I wonder if that will ever change.

Intel graphics are always shunned for "barely meeting minimum requirements" but they fair quite well in games (at low resolutions) as long as the game doesn't "block" them. Fall Out 3 wouldn't let me play the game because I had Intel HD graphics. I had to run a spoof saying that I had an NVidia card and I was able to play the game in all medium graphics...lol

that sucks! i am not a hardcore gamer so iris pro will do me fine....
it may sound strange but i play chess most of the time.

So is the Haswell MBP available for sale now and are they already available through Best Buy?

Quick question for you if you don't mind. Do you plan to use Lightroom on the 13" screen, or do you use an external display for post processing?

Hi Nismo73,

Both actually. I have my primary install of LR and PS6 on a Windows desktop machine at home. This is where I do the majority of my edits. However, when I take a photo trip I like to dump my cards to a laptop in the evenings and do some initial tagging/flagging/editing on the spot. So yeah, I'll be using the 13" screen to do that (although I'll use the 1650x1080 scaled resolution because the regular retina res is way to small IMO). I'll use the Windows machine for the regular edits before I print or put them online.

I also have a 27" 1440p external monitor which I use for my retina 15" at home, which will now be used for the new 13" once it comes, so I'm sure I'll do some LR stuff on there too, although most of it will be on my other machine.

Hope that helps.

Congratulations! Is that the one with just Iris Pro or also with the 750M?

With the 750M, I'd been waiting for this for months (joined the thread around page 50) so I went all out on it.

Treating it as an investment :D

Loving it. I'll be more than happy to retire my old 2009 Macbook for this. This is the most powerful (read: expensive) computer I've ever had, or even used. It seems to handle anything I throw at it (although so far that hasn't been too extreme)

Why not keep the dGPU and just keep it turned off? Would do great for resale value later if you ever end up planning on selling it!
