Im currently in the hunt for a 15 cmbp and still holding off to see if theres an upgrade to haswell. I let some good deals go waiting and wondering at this point if it matters. Im not concerned about battery life as ill have the machine plugged in most of the time. And dont plan on planning games on it. Mostly will be used for music production and djin. Do you guys see apple allowing. 32gbs of ram is that overkill ?

Do you really have a use for 32GB RAM? I develop software usually with a virtual machine running and have found 4GB sufficient, I'll be upgrading to 8GB when the new laptops are released. 32GB is a lot of memory!

MBP is not strictly developed for developers :D Ask photographer or graphic designer is 4 GB of RAM sufficient ;)

Yeah I know that haha, hence my opening question.
I use my machines for editing photos and 8 GB is sufficient for that kind of work. And I'm not talking casual photo editing here ... 36 MP images ... roughly 70 MB per RAW file. Lightroom and Photoshop run just fine on 8 GB with those images and I have quite some RAM left.
Am hoping for 16 GB RAM default option on the new 13" rMBP, but 32 GB is just silly. Yes I know I know, "there's never enough RAM", but as Xcallibur said, please ask yourself if you really need it or is it just for bragging rights. :)

Can't say for video editing, but I'd guess 16 GB of RAM is probably more than enough for the majority of people.

Well i dont have a use for it now, and im sure that anything ill be using the machine for will need that much power, but i figured if the machine allows me to upgrade it to that capacity and it may give me some more years without having to upgrade why not. This is all pending that the cmbp is even upgraded. I guess i can hold out with july being not to far away.

I'm thinking that July is a reach. I'm hoping, been waiting for 9 months and my current computer is killing me, but I was extremely disappointed on June 10 and now I'm just hoping its not October. If it was coming out in July I would think they would have said something at the convention. After all, they announced iOS 7 and OSX 10.9

The average number of days until an update has passed though so any time is possible. They've never left the cMPB any longer without an update than they have done to the current generation, same goes to the rMBP; although there is less history with that model.

What would they say? "We're going to put Haswell in the MBPs but they're not going to ship until 6 weeks later because our retina screen supplies were low"? Unlikely. It's pretty clear that the MBPs were destined for a refresh at WWDC, and Apple opted to do a silent refresh in July. However, there is a slight possibility of a far later release with some sort of major changes; that is really unlikely as the rMBP is just a year old.

I'm really amazed at how seemingly silent this update will be. Even on MacRumors, there doesn't seem to be any news about the update.

It would be a very poor decision for Apple not to release the new MPBs for the back-to-school crowd. I suppose they can schedule the refresh to be concurrent with the back-to-school promotion this coming month, but it is getting tight.

What other possible reasons are there for not having BTS yet?

That's exactly what I'm thinking, that July is still the plan. Tim Cook just didn't want to announce them at WWDC and do something like what they had with the new iMacs.

I hope we're right.

It would seem to me, in order to prepare for the manufacturing involved, based on what we know, there won't be a form factor/major design overhaul...Thunderbolt 2 and 4k Cinema display updates on the horizon and their relationship with a future rMBPs though - I'm definitely curious to see what they come up with...but this sounds more likely for Mac Pro, not mac book (at least at this stage). I wish I could wait until that tech for 4k is released, but regardless of what features are available on the next rMBP update, I will be purchasing one. so my gut tells me we're looking at the SSD drive updates, Igzo display, Wifi, and Haswell offerings

Looking forward to July 1st!

Just caved and bought a brand new rMBP. 15" core i7 2.7 ghz, 512gb SSD and 16GB of RAM for 1700$ from a seller on ebay. Went directly through paypal so ebay doesn't take a percentage and so I got it mad cheap. Figured with this deal I have to take it and if Haswell is really THAT good I can sell this one used for a profit probably and put it towards the new one :D

I can bet you some $ that nothing will happen on July 1st :( Looks like i'll be getting the rMBP after New Years (still have to allow beta testers to use it before i get it) LOL

If they were having an event for MBPs, I think we would have heard of a booking at one of the event centers by now. That is if we were talking July. I just find it so odd that the MBPs and rMBP have not seen the light of day of a refresh or announcement of a revamp! If Apple is holding back, they must be doing something very big to the whole line. This is the longest the Pros have gone w/o any updates, well the cMBP.

I wouldn't be able to pass that up either lol good find!

Idk. I'd love for you to be right. I just don't think so early. Hey, they've announced and showcased iPhones in the past weeks before the release. I just think if the rMBP was coming out 3 weeks after the convention then they would have showcased it. And your first statement is nonsensical to me. They showcased the system software s MONTHS before the release. Why couldn't they showcase a hardware product and just say "Due for release in July"?

Didn't have much time to explain my reasoning when I made my last post, I'll clarify: what they showcased were long-term technological improvements: Mavericks, Mac Pro, iOS. The Macbook Pro clearly didn't make this category, which leads me to think they're not doing any major improvements this year. It is quite possible that Apple didn't want to weaken their presentation by announcing a simple spec bump that wouldn't come until the following month. That alone doesn't make a July release likely; however there are other reasons: 1) Apple has everything to make a Haswell rMBP, Razer and other companies have already done it, 2) it's unlikely that Apple will spend the entire summer selling the Air as the only up-to-date computer, 3) there was a shortage of retina screens. In short, once the supply issues are cleared, there's really no good reason for Apple not to update the MBP. This reasoning is only wrong if Apple decides to do some tech upgrade other than Haswell/750m, which I think is unlikely considering the rMBP is still a first-gen device and Apple's got plenty of work on the iOS front.

From a marketshare and a financial standpoint, I think that Apple would be foolish to not introduce the new rMBPs alongside its BTS promo.

I'm just going to throw out my prediction and say everything hits (BTS/Haswell rMBP refresh... or at least announcement) on Tuesday, July 16th.

You make a valid and strong argument. Nobody hopes that you are right more than me. But you say it's a simple spec bump. It's more than that to me. It'll be a true 2nd generation for one. That's very important to me as I have a policy of never buying 1st generation Apple products. I didn't buy the first iPhone or iPad, and for good reason. I've been waiting a year for this and god knows what kind of tweak there will be. There is Haswell, of course, the Wifi, the SSD, possible Thunderbolt 2 etc. plus I'm hoping for a 512 SSD base. For me this is all a big deal.

I do agree that these upgrades are pretty good. However, I highly doubt that the base model will come with a 512GB SSD. Given that the base model on the MacBook Air is 128GB, it seems logical that the base Retina MacBook Pro will also remain at 256GB. Although these updates may be beneifiacl to some, I cannot see myself needing any of them right now besides the extra battery life/graphics power. Therefore, I'd much rather spend the extra money I would spend on a new Haswell Pro on buying a maxed out 2013 model. You can find many great discounts right now and save a lot of money.

I thought Thunderbolt 2 was not going to be released for a while? And a 512 SSD for the base model is not going to happen. I can see 256 base though.
