I really don't see what people are expecting to find in a thread like this at this point. The waiting for the Haswell rMBP is over.

Sorry I'm late! It took me a while to decide which model to buy. A quick glance through the last several pages indicates that I was the lone holdout.

Now that every last one of us has our new Haswells, it's probably time to retire this thread.

This thread was a contentious place on MacRumors. We had lively debates about IGZO displays, touch screens, phantom signalling, Thunderbolt 2.0, integrated graphics, and even some heated speculation about whether Apple was going to cancel the Macbook Pro line altogether. We were a divided community, but we stuck together.

Even after the Haswells were released, the community was still divided, though on friendlier terms: The Haswells, and the has-nots.

But now that we all have our new Macbook Retinas, I think we can all agree...

All's well that's Haswell.

It seems to me the best selection of options - one that I'd be happy with for multiple years is:

Upgrade the mid-range 13" MBP to the 2.6GHz model. 1599 buys a great amount of memory, storage and processing power.

this is only thread I can really take over the last 2 weeks -

this board is flooded with amateur "do I need this" or "am I going to get a faulty machine" or "how should I spend my parents money"

I BEG THE MODS to give us a sub thread for discussing performance and upgrades otherwise I waste a ton of time raking through these useless threads that may have one or two posts in them that are useful but sifting through them is painful since the topic has been discuss ad nauseum.

Seriously, if we did not have useless posts, how do you expect we got to a 15,000+ post mega thread.

I would like to create a thread for new Mac'ers that includes tips and tricks - of course, old dogs are welcome but there are some basic info that some of us mac newbies do not know. Then again, there are other parts of this board that will have that info as it's not only applicable to rMBP.

Mac Basics and help ;). Not the best subforum, but it's a start.

Yeah, but there is some component shortage with 16GB RAM for the 13-inch. Says 1-2 weeks before shipping. Going to see if that changes in the next 2 days, or just take my chances and order.

So what is your final configuration?

Does anyone know if the HDMI out port also outputs audio? I was trying to hook my laptop up to my HDTV last week and wasn't able to get any audio - and in the System prefs, it led me to believe that its video-only

Yes, it does. You have to switch your audio output in the settings

13"/i7/16GB, been tossing up between 256GB and 1TB but I could go either way on that. I did flirt with the 15-inch briefly. But I'm glad I waited. Seems like the unresponsive screen/trackpad issue has been fixed, something I experienced using the machine at the Apple store.

Why the change of heart re: RAM?

(I remember you as a die-hard 8-gigger...)

Edit: Just realized I'm about to lug this plucky yet godforsaken white macbook to my studio for, potentially, the last time ever!! My new rMBP arrives tomorrow.

Praise Haswell.

Future-proofing, I guess. I began to regret my decision of going with 8GB RAM, so I cancelled it. And whenever I want to purchase a new Mac a few years down the line, I will likely be in a country where Mac prices are outrageous. So best to pony up for the RAM than be forced to buy a new computer.

Good call.

I also got "scared" into maxing out because I don't buy these things very often, and had access to a good price through friend's Apple Store discount.

Apple's prices have never made them easy purchases, but it really stings having to shell out for those BTO options nowadays. I'd grown accustomed to laughing self-righteously at their RAM and HDD prices and just upgrading them myself, but look who's laughing now, eh?

Best not to think of it, I suppose.

What is your configuration? Oh, it's also a good thing that the RAM sleep image file has been drastically reduced under Mavericks. Just spend the $200 on the extra RAM and never look back.

2.6/16/512. It's on one of UPS's nuclear submarines hurtling through the Pacific Ocean as we speak! ;)

Out of curiosity, what % of discount does an Apple employee gets?

Ah, 15-inch? Naughty boy. ;)

The World Dominator® configuration.

I've added 5 reps to my daily push-up routine to compensate for its hulking 4.5 lb weight. ;)

(Ironically, it's actually a half pound lighter than the 13" WhiteBook I've been slumming it on for the past two months.)

The employee gets a once-per-three-years 25% discount, and a 15% "friends and family" discount which is good for, I think, up to three Macs per year. (I got the latter 15% deal.)
