A genius bar folk told me extra-officially that there will likely be a silent refresh of rMBP line this summer. This would mean only CPU,GPU,WiFi, and PCIe flash bumps. No TB2, IGZO...

I could see that happening. I personally don't care about TB2 or IGZO too much, but the other things I want before purchasing a Mac.

381 days since the cMBP has seen any type of an update according to MacRumors Buyer's guide, not sure why the wait, again, unless they have something bigger and better.

On the BTS 2013 thread, two people had sources that said BTS would be early August, which might mean the silent refresh might go alongside that?

I'm feeling the Q3 period as well...(which incidentally starts July 1st..but I don't think it's that soon)...but what constitutes a 'new design'? I guess that's the million $ question...

Just based off other discussions, it seems like a new design is unlikely.

I went ahead and blocked out the 2013 predictions by month to give us an estimate of what Kuo was thinking. Obviously he didn't chart these out by the pixel and just threw in the dots... but maybe it might give us some insight on about when we might see some of these products roll out. Apple TV update didn't happen. But Macbook Air seems to be pretty close.

rMBP would fall around the 15-25th of July based on this chart.

I dont think any of us are looking for an iPhone roll out or even an ipod... but who knows.

I said it before and I'll say it again, I just have a feeling that Tuesday, July 16th we'll see something (rMBP alongside BTS). But that's just my own opinion.

I am gonna be more accurate than Mr. Ming-Chi Kuo regarding rMBP releases... I would say it'll be around August 16th, when JOBS movie is released! :D

I don't see why this matters at all. He has a 50% accuracy so far...

Like many of you, I am waiting for the new macbook pro retina release (15 inch) which I believe will be in the September - October time frame. The reason for this, as stated many times before, is that it makes most sense for the new Macbook Pros to be released with Mavericks and Mavericks will be released in the fall.

I've also noticed that there has been a minimal amount of things said about some of the features that could be in the macbook pro:

- Combined HDMI, USB, and SD Card slots (where you can use the SD card slots simultaneously with the USB port but the HDMI will use the whole port)

- IGZO Panels (Rather improbable, but there is a chance)
The reason why I say this is because recently Sharp has formed a licensing deal with China Electronics to mass produce the IGZO panels. Furthermore, "Sharp does not exclusively own the technology, [but] is only the first to commercialize it.”

Some of the "old news:"

- 1080p Facetime
"Kuo has also claimed that the next-generation Retina MacBook Pro models will see upgrades to 2.0-megapixel 1080p FaceTime cameras for improved video quality on the machines' high-resolution displays."

- Faster SSID Flash
As many of you know Macbook air can reach a read and write throughput of around 750 MB/s. This technology should be coming soon.

- AC Wifi
Triple the speed of the N protocol currently in the mac line up (other than the air).

- Haswell Iris series with integrated GPU
This will, as you all most likely know, consume much less battery.

Hopefully, it comes sooner than September. I don't need it now but waiting is a painful.

I wonder if the design of the new Mac Pro gives us any hint in the new design directions for :apple: and the new MBPs? Maybe the go all black.

Given that the airs aren't black, I'd assume not. Unless they want to distinguish the pro lines that way.

No. They won't combine USB, SD and HDMI. HDMI will be a separate port. Even with what is described in the patent you can't use USB and SD at the same time with the same port. The SD card fits in the space under the USB connector.

The title of the article is misleading since this new port won't slim laptops down. The USB port won't become smaller and is already almost the "heighest" port on the machines.

It's a smart patent, but I don't see Apple using it anytime soon.

PaulSpr, I agree that the laptop will not become slimmer (thats why I didn't say it would).

However, apple is already taking steps towards combining functions like the removal of the disk drive and ethernet and offering thunderbolt instead. While I know they won't entirely remove the separated ports, I believe they may combine HDMI with one USB port.

Furthermore, its almost certain that they implement this technology in the next round of Macbook Airs as it will allow for thinner MacBook Airs.

about this Patent this wont make macbook any slimmer but what this could be interesting for is that to make motherboard shorter so that they could add more battery so they have better battery life :)

But in my opinion i dont see this patent to be implentet on any recent macbooks

Again, no. Combining a USB with another port does not make that port any thinner. Given that USB take up almost the full thickess of the Air, combining that port will not make the Air thinner.

well, they probably want to make a 3 usb port macbook ( finally ? ) with the third port combined with the sdcard.
sounds plausible to me.

the other scenario is, they are trying to combine the second usb port with sdcard.....

Might be useful on the 11" Air since that doesn't have en SD card slot. It's most useful to either save space or add the SD reader to a machine that hasn't got it (the 11" Air and current Mac Pro and future Mac Pro).

But there are some problems which make me think Apple won't use this on most machines.

1) It takes away a USB port when you have an SD card in the slot. Though I rarely use USB (only for thumb drives and external HDDs) many users won't like this.

2) The ports become less clear and thus usable. Now every port only accepts one connector. So it's easy to see which port you need to plug your connector into. With the combined port you get this weird shape which could accept many connectors, but there isn't one connector with that exact shape.

If Apple holds the rMBP's up until September or October it won't be to wait for Mavericks or Intel. IMHO, it will be for TB2 to drive 4K displays.

i just remembered something
(img)
this is the eSATA + USB port.

i don't see how implementation of USB + SDCard is harder than the USB+eSATA port.

The eSATAp (that's what that port is officially called) port was designed to be similar to USB. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESATA#eSATA

Apple's patent works differently. The USB connector is more or less the same it has always been, only the base is wider and deeper. That where the SD card gets inserted. The SD connector pins are on the bottom of the port. The USB connector never makes contact with them. The SD card doesn't have pins on top so those can never connect with the USB pins (which are on top of the tiny platform inside the connector).

The implementation wouldn't be hard at all. It's just a clever idea.

Related: Haswell has support for 4 to 6 USB3 ports, while Ivy Bridge only has support for 2. So we might see more USB ports on the rMBPs.
