The new MacBook Pro with Retina display will be available this fall.

Haswell, Thunderbolt 2, PCI-E SSDs, W8 Native EFI, Improved Display, Better Battery Life, Better Integrated and Dedicated GPUs all coming this fall.

This upgrade will be the one to wait for. :D

Anyways, I noticed this in the screenshot of some guy testing 10.9 DP

Image

3360x2100 A possible resolution upgrade to the rMBP 15.

And oh Apple told you all of this?

omg I'm torn. literally 50/50 and it's taring me up. I bought an iMac in 2008, again in 2011, missed an update both times by purchasing ~40 days too early.

...

I don't "need" it, but I do need it by end of August.. why wait all summer for an upgrade that might not come?

Alright! BTS sales starting tomorrow according to rumour. Logic from return policy says new rMBP's aren't going to happen until at absolute least 14 days after the sale. so, looks like I'll be buying current rMBP gen!!!

To everyone whose been waiting: it feels amazing to finally know I don't have to wait anymore. Feels better than the 1 or 2 extra hours of battery life ever will.

Do you know how long the BTS sales usually last?

It makes a lot of sense to expect that new machines won't arrive earlier than 14 days after the sale. Gives Apple the opportunity to sell some inventory using the education discount + BTS as incentive.

I know what you mean. This makes the decision a little easier now.

I don't see how you're getting that from that screenshot.

The current rMBPs already render at 3360x2100 if you put them in "Looks like 1680x1050" mode.

Pretty sure that the Air was updated in the middle of the BTS sale in 2011.

From the 9to5mac article about cMBP 13": "we are told Apple will be heavily promoting this laptop for its new student-focused promotion." This is all or nothing in terms of the Haswell upgrade; I don't think Apple could promote current MBPs and then refresh even as early as a month later. However, they've already flushed MBP inventory in May. So I suppose a BTS release is not entirely out of the question. On a side note, I facepalm every time I see TB2 or 4k displays mentioned in this thread. Those are 2014+ features, and we're definitely not going to see them even in November.

I think that a BTS announcement with a MBP/MBPr silent bump is very possible for the following reasons:

-Apple sells a lot of notebooks during the BTS and it would be pretty sad if they were promoting IB based notebooks for the fall.

-IF you go down that road (BTS pushing IB), are you going to bump to Haswell in the fall and anger all those students who bought notebooks for school? That seems dangerous...

-I think TB2 and 4k displays are long shots for this refresh. If Apple was going to rollout a 4k display they would not do a silent update. It would be an event which leads back to the above problem. Are you going to update your notebooks in the middle of BTS with something pretty amazing and piss off early buyers? They may not care about Haswell but if it came with 4k displays, people would be ticked.

-IF Apple doesn't update their notebooks at or during BTS, then you ask yourself when? Well, the next opening would be far enough from BTS so it doesn't look like you got all these saps to buy old stock but enough before Christmas to sell it for the holidays. I think late October or November seems good. Apple could do an event that might have TB2 but 4k displays seems a stretch.

Personally, if Apple is just going to do a simple CPU/GPU bump I could see a silent update the day BTS starts. If not, I don't look for an update until October-ish.

Just my 2 cents worth,

Funny, I was just about to click place order now for a 15 inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, but I guess I am waiting until Tommrow to see what happens. 50/50 odds seem good to me.

Would be amazing to see a silent refresh and have the wait finally over.

But, it has been only about 3 weeks since WWDC and it is hard to see Apple coming out with a new MacBook Pro that fast. But, anything can happen!!

And, maybe the back to school promotion may start a different day? No one said it is for sure starting tomorrow?

I'll be up watching the store tonight.

New Retina MacBook Pro this week???

With Apple starting it's Back To School promotion this week, and likely tomorrow, does anybody think Apple will do a silent update to the Retina MacBook Pro?

If it does not happen tomorrow, then I think that it will come out in the fall.

Unlikely, but possible.

There is already a thread about upcoming MBP upgrade to Haswell.

No it probably will come out in either September or October. Apple wouldn't do a silent update 3 weeks after WWDC. It would have made more sense to announce it at WWDC and say shipping in 3 weeks so more people would be aware of the update. Apple has been on a 8 month update cycle for the MacBook Pro's with the exception of the 13" rMbp.

1) If Apple is going to discontinue cMBP, then BTS is the perfect excuse to push all of the cMBP stock away. So yes, it is very likely they're just pushing IB for BTS.

2) The update to Haswell won't drop prices significantly, so there is still a huge price gap between the rMBP and the cMBP. And the benefits of Haswell for Retina MacBooks are much less significant compared to the MacBook Air since the Retina Display is the significant power draw, not the processor. The students would have to think: would they have dropped an extra $400 - 500 for a new Retina MacBook that they won't need?

3) 4K displays are not a stretch if Apple plans to roll out a new 4K TV. And there are 4K TVs on the market already from other manufacturers (Sony for instance). People seem to forget Apple still has a TV plan in mind... so this is a reminder.

4) If Apple was going to push a Haswell upgrade for rMBP any time soon, benchmarks and rumors would start flying left and right. Why? Because production should have already started months ago, and they'd have to have the packaging and everything else ready by now in order to roll out an update. The February 2013 refresh was rumored as a potential cooling system revision since December 2012. That was 2 months ahead. Safe bet: they haven't finalized the Haswell upgrade for rMBPs yet, and they're taking their sweet time. Production can start as late as August or September if they're only shipping new Haswell rMBPs by October/November.

Store WIFI update?

Would it be possible that Apple updates their WiFi in-store to support the rMBP w/802.11ac?

I know they haven't done it with the Air, but what if they're waiting for more devices?

They'd also be waiting for new iPad, iPod Touch, and iPhone. And the Mac Pro, too. And potentially a new iMac and Mac Mini as well.

There are many more products that they may be waiting on. It's not just the rMBP.

Actually, on June 20, a geekbench score leaked out for a Haswell powered 13 inch Retina MacBook Pro.

On a side note, I facepalm every time I see TB2 or 4k displays mentioned in this thread. Those are 2014+ features, and we're definitely not going to see them even in November.

But didn't Apple promise these 'features' on the new 2013 Mac Pro? So why wouldn't TB2 be available later this year for updated rMBP's?

I think the idea is that the Mac Pro is a desktop - vs. a portable laptop which tend to have a lessor cost friendly solution for micro-sized computer tech...(ex: high end video cards), and...it's new tech that may or may not make its way to the MBP the sametime it comes to the Mac Pro systems

Yeah, but the Mac Pro was also benchmarked, and we all know it won't come until Fall.

It's when there are packaging leaks or specs leaks flying around that we know we're approaching release date.

That benchmark is more likely proof that Apple is still testing Haswell designs in their labs as of a few days ago... and production hasn't started yet.
