After much contemplation, I think I've come up with my game plan. At this point, I'm not holding out much hope at all that the rMBP will be updated before the fall. I start college in late August, so I need a laptop by then (I've only had desktops up to this point). I think I'm going to buy a late 2012 15" cMBP off Craigslist for cheap because they've already depreciated significantly and won't go much lower for now. I found a pristine one from September with 2.3GHz, 16GB RAM, 500GB HDD, and hi-res screen for $1200 OBO. Good deal, I think. I'll keep that until the Haswell rMBPs come out and get (hopefully) good reviews, at which point I'll sell my 15" cMBP for a very similar price to what I bought it for and buy a new 15" Haswell rMBP. Sound good?

Best Buy has the 13" cMBP's on sale for $1,112 right now, and you get a warranty with that. ;)
Edit: the cMBP at BB is 2.5GHz, with 4GB RAM. It's bound to have a decent resale value if you decide to sell and buy the Haswell rMBP later.

On a serious note... Why do you need a 15 for Japan and 13 for where you are now? ???

Why does it matter? Maybe its for work and he needs the extra speed or screen real estate.

Sheeh buddy, it was just a question. Just curious, because I can't imagine what he's going to be doing in Japan that is much different to what he's doing in his own country with a computer. About the only thing I can think of is he's going to study here and he isn't now?

Actually makes a lot of sense ...not knowing what's up apples sleeves , I went for a brand new rMBP for $2300 2.7/16 gb off eBay (figure around $700 less than current list) ...I may keep it . Or maybe hang onto it for a generation or two...playing it by ear but at least I have something to work with

I have to agree, for them not to update the cMBP or refresh the rMBP with Haswell yet, they are in the lab perfecting a total redesign of the MBPs. Here's hoping that it will be worth the wait. So the Sept/Oct timeline seems more accurate than this summer, tough to swallow, but Im starting to believe its true (about the timeline that is).

I really don't see them resdesigning them at all. People with current retina macbook pros, who supposively bought "the best" computer on the market, would be outraged if they were completely changed a year later. It especially would not happen since Haswell really isn't a huge upgrade from the current processors. Im sorry but many of the other theories on this post as to why apple is taking so long seem to be much more plausible.

So, to simplify my past question.

Is buying a refurbished rMBP right now a bad idea?

Not really. It'd be cheaper than paying retail, and Apple refurbished is pretty much brand new. If you need it now, buy it now. Refurbished is the way to go right now if you're OK with that.

I mean I don't mind waiting a month or two, but to wait for the Haswell to hit the refurb store, it'll be 6-8 months from now most likely haha...

The Haswell release won't affect the price of the refurbs will it?

You are going to be waiting a long time for Haswell rMBP refurbs. I'd just buy now in your situation if you are going refurb due to budget.

I think Apple usually drops the price of the previous generation's refurbished models when they release new models. Personally, I'd wait until their earnings come out on the 23rd of this month, just in case - 2011 Macbook Airs were announced at their earnings call in July.

When I started looking at rMBP's on Apple's website last week, they listed a 2.5 and 2.9GHz processors. When we went to the Apple store two days ago, they only had 2.6 and 2.9 GHz rMBP's in the store. It's stated on the box, and also on the computer's properties file. I just looked again at Apple's site, and they don't have a 13" rMBP with a 2.6GHz processor listed. More of the silent upgrading? All I know is the model we bought is fantastic, and switching over to OS X couldn't have been easier.

We looked at the Air, and it's screen is an abomination. The non-retina MBP has a screen that makes the new Air look like 1990's tech, so I don't see what the Haswell fuss is all about with that device. We thought about waiting for the "upgrade", but the 13" rMBP with a 2.6GHz processor is speedy and does what we need it to do. It makes my two year old Windows PC feel like garbage.

Really agree with this,

Why anyone would part with 1k+ for a laptop with a stupidly low PPI and rubbish viewing angles is beyond me... Especially when you can add a few 100 and get the beast that is the 15".

My god, some people just need others to justify the fact that they have to wait to get the newest model.
Seriously, unless that 'some people' are like traveling for more than 7 hours, I would understand them (in which case, they wouldn't even need others to justify their waiting.) It's those other people that want the latest ones to make themselves feel better.

Just go and get one. Nothing is a bad deal if you are getting the same model for $100 or $200 less.

I bought one straight after the keynote letdown...

Lay down the crack pipe guys. There's no redesign coming LOL. Apple is just waiting for Intel, that's it :D

Yes, that's correct...

All they are waiting for is the Haswell CPUs with the Iris pro graphics... That isn't out until the fall..

Where did you find a 13" rMBP for 60% off? That's an insane price.

40 percent off - it was lightly used. Wat made me go for it was the fact that a company sold it, which means I don't have to pay VAT and can count it as a purchase on my company.

Of course, I'm still very interested in Haswell as I need a 15" - just not right now.
