July 5, 2006: the iMac went from Core Duo to Core 2 Duo. It was right after the eMac was discontinued: Timeline_of_iMac_models

There were also Macbook Air and Mac Mini updates in July.

I think that all the crystal-ball-looking regarding when Apple does and does not upgrade products is a bit silly.

The new rMBPs will be released when the rMBPs are ready. They might hold them a max of 1-2 weeks if there's another event scheduled to lump them in with, but they aren't going to delay them for 3 months because that's when their next big event is.

I've been watching this thread for a little while now, and out of sheer laziness I'm just now bringing myself to make an account and post, haha. Anyways, hopefully I'll be able to stop some of the speculation with dates that's going on here. I myself am in need of a Retina MacBook Pro 15", however I'm most definitely waiting for the new model before I drop any cash on it. In my anticipation of it's release, I've been reading all the rumors and theories behind the Haswell MBP's release date. I'll be entering college next year, and as such, I'm in a facebook group with other students that I'll be going to school with next year. One of the students just so happened to post some information on the Haswell's launch month

He spoke with an Apple executive at a 4th of July party, and the executive said that they MacBook Pro lineup would see it's refresh in OCTOBER. I was definitely bummed to find out it wouldn't be in July, August, or September, as I start school the first week of September and would have really loved to have a rMBP Haswell in time. However, I'll wait patiently until October arrives. Hopefully this will settle some of your busy minds, for better or for worse. :)

I agree with you matt,
maybe rMBP or cMBP will release on october.
from others over view, rMBP has release on Feb 2013, are you sure apple will release on short time? (july/august?.

usually, apple release on 3 model : EARLY (feb), MID(june) and LATE (oct)
and macbook-air has release on june right?

be patient until october...

Don't you know Apple employees, especially the executives, sign a NDA!

I doubt anyone at Apple who knows the release date for the rMBP would just give out that information, especially to some incoming college freshmen.

Wait, someone I have never heard of, joins this forum and makes their first post to say that someone they have never met made a post on the internet—in a location I cannot check to verify—stating that someone they had only just met at a party, claimed to be an Apple executive and leaked the timetable for an upcoming product refresh?

Sounds totally reliable to me.

i splurged on a 2.7ghz 15" rmbp and I couldn't be happier with it. i've got a nice samsung display with a nice samsung ssd with absolutely no complaints to speak of so far. it's nice guys. as a student heading off to college in August, it didn't make any sense for me to wait any longer.

Sounds legit...

That is possible, but I think if Apple had everything else ready for an update, they'd do one now and add Thunderbolt 2 early next year. Production for TB2 starts in late 2013, in time for the Mac Pro, but they ramp up production in 2014, and they sell a lot more Macbook Pros than Mac Pros

Also, given the model numbers of the MBPs at the moment (9,x for cMBPs and 10,x for rMBPs), it's quite likely that they won't get Haswell processors - Apple even got rid of the higher end 15" in February.

When Thunderbolt 1 was added to the MacBook Pro, it was several months before Intel's production ramp.

Adding it to the MacBook Pro gets it in a lot more people's hands, and betters the Thunderbolt 2 ecosystem.

Besides, what's the rush? Half the people in this thread bought the existing systems and were happy. Really Apple just wants to get out in time for Christmas.

Apple is likely to stage all their pro updates (Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, Mavericks, any pro software updates) all at once. If that wasn't the plan we should have seen a push at WWDC.

Delaying haswell release until December is likely Apple doing a Harakiri...

Hey bro I spoke to Tim Cook a few hours ago and he told me the Haswell MBPs have been launched yesterday!

:(

If I'm not mistaking didn't Apple release an earlier model of the Macbook Pro a few months before the release of one of their more recent OS', such as snow leopard/lion/mountain lion and then offered a free upgrade when it came along? How can people speculate that we'll only see the refresh in October when Mavericks releases? So silly.

I'm speculating that they're being withheld due to issues seen in the Macbook Air with 802.11ac OR there has been problems obtaining the required amount of parts. I'd assume we'll see a release late-July early-August in time for the real back to school and back to business. The only additional benefit of a release in October would be that it's close or on the release date of Mavericks, marketing for Christmas couldn't really apply compared to if they actually had a marketing plan for Christmas late-November or early-December, not in October. They could easily make just as much or more profit with BTS in addition to marketing their product in those months.

All I know is that Apple is going to have a ton of pissed off customers when they release the new rMPB after parents and students just bought one in the BTS event even if they release in October. Even though the product is still great no matter if it's the early 2013 model or the one that's TBA but the additional battery life really makes a difference in the lives of students such as myself where I have classes from 9am until around 7pm.

I will feel better when SKU numbers start popping up for new models and leaks for Asia manufacturing plants are released.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see new models in July but my gut says October.

k.

Been catching up on this for the last couple of days. Still caught me off guard that some think Apple will do away with the regular MBP and go all-Retina. I really hope that isn't the case. They are super nice, but I just don't have the use for it and I like being able to do a few things myself.

Hopefully we'll get some more rumblings in the next month that will indicate whether this will be the case or not. As for now, I'll anxiously stand on the sidelines.

I wonder if the delay has something to do with the screens. It seems that they have been dreadful in terms of build quality and reliability with all those image retention issues and exploding pixels.

They most likely encountered some delays and decided to release it along with Mavericks public release in October, this seems the most logical.

Unless they want to spread product releases noting Tim Cook said they'd have an "army" of products in the works.

But hey, the sooner the better!

If they "come back" with faulty screens again, i might be done with Apple. They take their time, fine... but everything better be tip-top this time around.

Is it feasible that the Haswell 13" rMBP will be able to support 16GB RAM? I have been waiting for that for a long time it seems... Next Q: Is it likely?

It's anyone's guess. I could see it going either way. I think it's overdue. How can you release a MBP that can't be upgraded with only 8GB of RAM in 2013? But with Apple introducing memory compression in Mavericks they may rationalize that 16GB isn't necessary.
