It's anyone's guess. I could see it going either way. I think it's overdue. How can you release a MBP that can't be upgraded with only 8GB of RAM in 2013? But with Apple introducing memory compression in Mavericks they may rationalize that 16GB isn't necessary.

I am already playing with Mavericks DP2, and I can tell you it does little to none compression. Don't expect miracles with this old feature, it will not double you RAM...

What are you basing this off of? Extensive benchmarking tests I assume?

The activity monitor app allows you to monitor the compressed RAM. All you have to do is to run applications, and when the upper bound limit of your RAM is almost reached, it starts triggering RAM compression. Be aware, Mavericks will still use disk swapping when it can't free memory through compression.

I am not sure if there is an API and how complicated it would be to hook your application to instrument memory compression. I'll have a look at it though...

I'm far too lazy to test that. <.<

well, i don't see why devs should deal with the memory management (other than making sure your app is efficient and no memory leaks ).

compression should be the job of the OS itself just like how TRIM does garbage collection behind the scenes.

it could be the memory compression is still in its early stages, we'll see later when the GM is released.

With 2000 euro can i get the next 15" retina model??

no idea, can you get the current retina with 2000 euros? if yes then its also yes for the next generation.

i splurged on a 2.7ghz 15" rmbp and I couldn't be happier with it. i've got a nice samsung display with a nice samsung ssd with absolutely no complaints to speak of so far. it's nice guys. as a student heading off to college in August, it didn't make any sense for me to wait any longer.

You are right, the waiting totally makes no sense.
Because the most important period of college study is the first two months.

Even though you could have a better rmbp in October, and for next 4 years, but that's not important, the key is to own it for the first two months.:p

Yeah, I didn't really think it would ;) But I could see Apple using memory compression as a rationalization after the fact if the 13" rMBP does not have a BTO option for 16GB of RAM. I'm really hoping Apple offers it with the possibility of 16GB of memory. That would be a great machine.

And don't forget a Quad core option to go with that. I'd buy that even if it cost just a bit less than the 15" rMBP.
Not likely to happen tho.

What do you mean by dev, OS X engineering team or an application developer?

We agree :)

The compression algorithms exist since decades... It is a very mature field...

I actually have a feeling we're going to see a slight price increase in the next generation.

devs as in application developer.

so u know what kind of algo they're using? hmm...perhaps some other optimizations?

There are several compression algorithms: Huffman, Lempel–Ziv–Welch (LZW), ARC,...etc, but the most used is ZIP, which I believe is the one used by Apple.

i think its LZMA, ZIP is not efficient enough IMO

Sure, try with fractal compression, you'll end up freeing memory few minutes or hours later...

Do you know any better algorithm that has a good compression ratio, is fast enough, and is not based on ZIP?

mac prices going down every year ... due to inflation and stuff ...

people used to shell more than $4k for a mac desktop.

Inflation causes prices to go up, or "become inflated".

That being said, I'm all for lower mac prices and I don't disagree that that is the trend.

I can confirm this.

Any "compression" Mavericks does is only there for certain things from how I look at it. Applications like Photoshop and Illustrator, which are heavy-hitters when it comes to RAM, still hog RAM like crazy.

So 16GB is still very necessary. Also because Retina graphics assets take up 4x the memory space, so Retina-optimized apps do take up more memory than on a non-Retina machine.

As for why Apple does not allow 16GB upgrade for 13" rMBP, that's... probably one of the weirdest decisions I have seen yet.

Inflation makes prices go up. Prices go down due to technology maturing and becoming more readily available as it becomes easier to manufacture and yields go up, R&D costs being amortized over the number of units that will be sold and that number having reached a tipping point, and of course, competition. And stuff.

July still looking like when these will be released? Need a MBP within the next couple weeks and I'm holding out..

Sorry if this has been answered before.. !

Apple has their earnings conference on the 23rd, they won't release a new product before then. But I doubt it's going to become available the last week of July. September is more likely.
