That just means the the low air/ air replacement pro's are going to get quad cores.

I find this more interesting as the H series is going to have a 18 watt CPU. That's less than half of the 45W H CPUs. This could push battery life up past 12 hours on the 15" pro's.

Not going to happen, they'll make the battery smaller and shave 1mm of the laptop.

No cannon lake for 15W GT3, 28W and 45W chips. Coffee lake in 2 years.

Any chance this comes out in 2017?
Zero chance. Cannon Lake comes in 15 watt and 4.5 watt variations which are not used in MacBook Pros. Coffee Lake on the other hand, will come in the 28 watt and 45 watt variations that the Macbook pro uses, but that's not until mid 2018.

http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/intel-cannon-lake-late-2017-coffee/

People "waiting for Cannon Lake" are waiting for a train that's never coming. Awful long wait for Coffee Lake. Kaby Lake will be a marginal improvement over Skylake and you will still be stuck with a maximum 16 GB of RAM due to the low power RAM requirement that Apple has set for MacBook Pros.

Long story short, waiting around for a big upgrade is going to lead to a lot of disappointment. Nothing big's coming for at least two years.

Wish I could wait that long but sadly not, typing notes on a tablet is doable but it's not fun and everything that isn't MS Office 2010 just doesn't cut it for me. So decisions have to be made but I'm sure Apple and all the other OEMS are not going to have a Canon Lake ready before q4 2017 at the earliest.

Good, because im about to order a 2016 model lol

I don't see why it should be locked, as it's pointed out that Canonlake or Coffee Lake would be the next chipset, not Kaby Lake, so this thread isn't wrong.

I agree!
Though mac users probably will never see this chip/chipset as Apple will razzle and dazzle the stage and tell you why an Arm chip is superior over a full fledge laptop chip.

The skylake thread provided excellent information about the processor and its capabilities.

That said, it's entirely possible Apple could decide to give up 45W and move down to either 28W or 15W. They're always looking for thinner and more power efficient processors.
[doublepost=1478001765][/doublepost]This is going to be one epic thread if it's going to cover Kaby Lake, Cannonlake, AND Coffee Lake.

I quote Meicyn.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Kabylake on the 13 inch would actually be a downgrade right, as the Kabylake won't have Iris Pro graphics?

The 15 inch will probably end up getting a better iGPU compared to the i7-6700HQ, so could be worth waiting for that and the price drop?

Don't think we will get 32 GB ram next year, maybe a battery upgrade or taptic engine for the touch bar?

So if you wanted a 13 inch, I'd buy one now. As for 15 inch, on the fence, might be worth waiting?

I might just buy one of these and sell them if a significant refresh comes - I'll lose a bit of £££, but I would have had at least 9 months of use of the machine (not expecting anything in March personally).

Even Skylake doesn't have Iris Pro on the 28Watt processors. So, no it won't be a downgrade.

Each iteration of technology is better than the last and also never gives you what you want. Waiting for the next best thing has never ever panned out. Buy when you need has always and will always apply.

Ah of course, so both will offer GT3e I presume.

Alienware 13 is due to be released, completely different class of laptop so won't compare, but I am looking for something between the 13/15 inch and that might fit the bill - the Razerblade series for me had issues I can't tolerate, so heres hoping this machine doesn't (but this could just be wishful thinking). OLED screen though!

Or maybe go to another extreme altogether, and wait for an update to the 12" rMB, which will get the improved keyboard (I've been advised no additional key travel so should be manageable), Kabylake Core-M, maybe another port (doubt it), improved Webcam (50/50 I'd say). It will probably get the improved P3 screen with 30% less brightness, which could lead to them making the battery smaller to make the laptop even thinner, but I pray to God they don't and that we just get a huge battery life boost.

Positive thinking, I see – you're assuming there will be an update in 2017 :) Skylake thread (gone, but not forgotten!) went for three years and the first post said Skylake is rumoured to come in 2015 :D
If there's no update in 2017 this thread will also be gone, but not forgotten! ;)

Oh, so this is the thread to be!
I like how the mess of Intel updating made unclear the next CPU upgrade.
At least we were waiting for something precise, The_Skylake.
Now we have no clue about the upcoming Intel architecture!
Yay!
And so begins another epic thread....unless it gets locked...

Let's gooooo!

If there's no update in 2017 this thread will also be gone, but not forgotten! ;)

Our threads was better.
:p

I actually think the exact opposite, assuming both models are upgraded to Kaby Lake next year. The 13" iGPU in Kaby Lake will be far better at processing 4K video than the Skylake models. The 15" model though currently has a dGPU which already does really well at 4K video so the better iGPU is a bit pointless for 15" Kaby Lakes. And the CPU's for both will only be marginal improvements and from what I'm reading I don't expect 32 GB of RAM next year either for 15" Kaby Lakes.

What Ming-Chi Kuo says makes sense - a spec bump shortly after a new product release is not unusual. And I really do expect new color options to be released as well...at least gold and rose gold options. It's totally Apple's style to stagger the availability of colors to keep the wave of sales riding high. The price drop? I can only hope.

Looks like I'm returning the refurb I bought and waiting for the new Lake MBP. C'mon trusty ol' 2010 MBA...don't die on me now.

Yeah, this conversation is over.

How odd....

Yay!
I just completely gave up on trying to understand the differences by now. Skylake still incoming, Kaby Lake already incoming, some other lakes are in or out by now? I actually like how Apple go for "2,0‑GHz dual‑core Intel Core i5" on their specifications page, smart way to ensure nobody knows for sure what's in there. I looked at MBP page, specs page and order page on Dutch Apple website. It doesn't even mention "the 6th generation" or "the latest generation". Just 2,0 GHz i5.

Our threads was better.
This is our thread now friend! *pours drinks*
