I was about to upgrade to a new fully loaded 15” Macbook Pro….but decided to wait till they give us a 32GIG RAM option in the future (I do Logic Pro X with lots of Vis and plug-ins). I currently have a 15” Macbook Pro (Late 2013) with:
- 2.6 GHz i7
- 16GB (1600 MHz DDR3 Ram)
- NVIDA GeForce GT 750M 2048MB
- 1TB SSD (the one Apple put in…)

I wanted to upgrade to at least an internal 2TB SDD...but is there one...What would be the best/fastest/largest internal SSD that would be compatible with my MBP model?

Thanks so much
Mike

Pretty sure OWC is the only option outside of Apple's own SSD's, but I think the limit is 1TB (Don't quote me on that)? Also, there were a lot of reports with heat issues. On top of that, these SSD's are pretty slow for the price.

I had the occasion to try the new 13" MBP at a local store.
Boys, it's awesome.
The keyboard is almost the same as the MacBook, but to me doesn't feel weird anymore.
I'm starting to get used to it. Really.
It's super light.
The display is gorgeous.
Speaker are really really good for its size.

I seriously can't wait to see how is the 15".
Have we lost you? :(

(Technically it's they as I'm typing this from a 2015 rMBP but MAYBE the Whisky Lake update in 2021 makes me change my mind.)

Don't worry, I will always be part of this thread.
But I'm in desperately need of a new laptop, and just the 13" looked amazing, I can't wait for the 15".
(actually I can, as long as I don't have enough money and the shipping dates are far in the future).

I'll probably kill some time with the help of the friendly Monkey 47.

"Well i was hoping that kaby lake would have been released this year but apple decided that its best to sell us old skylake processors and up the price by a huge margin."

I'll wait, and I can with no problem, as I am using a perfectly good rMBP 2015 with lots of fantastic ports and a gorgeous display.

I am just a wee bit pissed because I dropped $1000 on 6 x 1080p 21.5" monitors for my old mac support layout. And don't get me wrong it's really tits. But here is the thing:

Who would have thought Apple + LG would have dropped the mic on these 4K UltraFine 21.5" Monitors for $524!

I mean yeah 3 x 4K is not the same as a hex mount layout, but you get 12x real estate vs 6x real estate.

One monitor would be at 1080p resolution and I would have to get adapters but still these are SICK!

I wouldn't have minded going $1600 on 3 x Apple+LG co-op-ed monitors like these, with the P3 gamut, etc.

DAMN! But it's all good...

If I was going with a New 2016 MacBook Pro, and could get 2 or 3 of these A YEAH!

Haha only 793 pages to go to catch up to it! I got tired of waiting for skylake so I snatched up a 15in zenbook instead for $940 (newest model originally $1500) during amazons 20% off wearhouse sale. I'm very happy with my choice; however, if Apple skips skylake and moves onto Kabylake them I'll definitely buy another macbook pro otherwise I'll just have to stick to Windows if Mac doesn't get ahead of the competition like they used to. I'm tired of the MacBook pros playing catchup, at one time they used to always be the latest and greatest and that made it much easier to justify their higher pricing, getting old tech at a premium is No Bueno. Lol

It is an insult to our collective intelligence when Tim Cook says, for every new Apple product, "The is the best <mumble> Apple has ever made!". Well, duhhhh? Pretty lame statement! Would anybody expect any new product to be inferior to its predecessor?

I have had about 7 repairs on my macbook pro and the apple store said they'll replace it but when they tried to replace it in the system for another macbook pro they claimed that I had an iMac back in 2008 replaced so they only honor one replacement in one persons life time. I looked all over the place on applecare's terms and conditions and I don't see that once in a lifetime replacement anywhere. I just want a new 2016 macbook pro for my old defective laptop already. I mean I only have 1 month and some days left on it.

Looks like apple might just skip skylake (hopefully since it's already so late) if they don't then this thread will have a very long wait!

Since Kaby Lake is now shipping maybe this is what apple was waiting for which could explain the delay. I hope this is true and they arn't going to disappoint us with skylake and actually deliver us the most up to date this year :):apple: the macbook pro lineup really needs this.

I'm officially no longer waiting for any new mac book pros. Apple is no longer the company i want to do business with. The company that was created by Steve Jobs seems seems to no longer exist. They do not care about the customers, they only care about how much profit they can take in from the millions of loyal fans they have acquired over the last 2-3 decades.
Until they offer at least 32gb of ram, the Pro designation is a bad joke .

Specs have barely budged and screen size worse than 2011. These are not Pro anything , just fancy toys for college kids . Cook has been a disaster for Mac computers .

I guess I'm stuck with my mid 2010 MacBook Pro forever, cause I'm not going to pay Apple for this extremely overpriced toy they call a MacBook "PRO". But it's ok, I upgraded ram to a max of 8 gb, removed the DVD and set up a 1.2 tb fusion drive and it still runs pretty well. Not sure if the new ones would last that long... except if I'd max out everything now and pay € 5000. (€ 5150 with adapters I would definitely need to buy). I was even considering buying an old 2015 machine, just to get all the ports I need (including optical audio out), a removable ssd, a keyboard that actually works, a trackpad I'm not accidentally touching when typing, MagSafe, a power adapter with an additional long power chord and hinges to roll up the cable, and just for fun the iconic Apple start chime and a glowing Apple logo. What the ****, Apple?

Why the new logo on the back surface of the screen, is not glowing anymore?

Yep, the new laptops are really incredible from build speakers display and even keyboard point of view

Can't believe that there is still no nice docking station for this that includes all the missing ports. Or maybe there is and I'm just not looking hard enough.

Apple could not go with Kaby Lake probably because the iGPU (Iris 620) is 30% less performant than Skylake's 540/550 on the 13". Look at the new XPS 13" benchmarks...it's not good. For a pro 13" that offers no dGPU option, Kaby Lake would have been a huge step back.

I have a 2014 MacBook Pro 15 and I love it. The one thing that I'd like more than what I have is the 9-hour battery life of the 2015 model (son has one of these and doesn't bring a power brick with him to work). I used my 2008 MBP 17 for six years and it still works just fine but it's a lot slower and less powerful than my current model. I have been slowly moving things off of my Windows desktops because Windows 10 is getting more and more unfriendly and I think that I can just live off my MBP.

It is hard to justify the price increase in the 2016 MBPs. I use my MBP with external monitors, keyboard, mouse and trackpad most of the time so the Touch Strip wouldn't be of any benefit to me. I don't need discrete graphics either. I will look at the 2017 models when they come out. I suspect that it will still be hard to justify an upgrade.

I also don't like the loss of MagSafe. I generally use powered port hubs for peripherals and I'm sure that I could set up something acceptable with USB-C. I also do like the SD-card slot in the 2014 and 2015 models.

OK guys, today after days of thinking, I finally decided to give a big "NO" to 2016 MBP and wait for a 32GB RAM option. I also decided to go for a cheap used MBP to get rid of kernel panics of my present laptop!
But surprisingly, after some search I found a 15" mid 2015 dGPU MBP for ~1300 USDs (actually its not in USD). The only problem with the device is that its display has been replaced.
But overall, it sounds a really good choice and I probably go for it.

I was in the same boat as you, had a 2010 15" MBP and was waiting to upgrade. I placed my order on the announcement day and it all came up $3000. As the day progressed and I kept thinking about how much this was a terrible value and that this computer didn't excite me, I was paying $3000 to keep on using macOS which I'm a huge fan of. I decided I couldn't go through with it and and canceled the order as soon as I could.

I decided to build my very first PC which was a bit scary as a first timer but I did it. I've got a machine with 16GBs of DDR4 RAM, where I can always upgrade down the line, two 2 TB HDDs, 1 500GB SSD, i7 6700k 4.0 GHz quad core CPU and a GTX 1070 graphics card and man, this thing is fast. I do miss macOS but I've been getting used to Windows 10 and customizing it to my liking. The speed and power of how fast this thing renders and encodes and just moves in general is awesome. Spending $1755 over the $3000 I was originally going to spend was worth it. I still have my MBP if I need portability.

you won't see 32GB of RAM until Intel adds support for LPDDR4 to their chips. As of now, the low-end Kaby Lake chips only support LPDDR3 and DDR4, so I don't think we're going to see a 32GB option until after Kaby Lake. Maybe Cannonlake? Ironically, the low-end Goldmont (Celeron N-series) chips do support LPDDR4. Seems like a big oversight on Intel's part.

tl;dr - unless Apple decides to redesign their laptops again and add a bigger battery, or intel adds LPDDR4 support to their chips, don't expect 32GB of ram on a macbook

This is exactly my idea, except I'm going to put macOS on it.
Yeah, I'd like to get a macOS partition up in the future, one of the reasons I didn't was because it doesn't seem the 1070 graphics card is supported for hackintosh builds. Seriously though, if you could easily install macOS on any hardware like with Windows, that would be amazing. Sadly that won't ever happen.

When is Cannonlake due? I want 32GB RAM and 1 TB storage (I am frequently running 3 OS at the same time and dealing with lots of 3D data). I also want fast graphics. Importantly, I want a laptop that works out in the real-world not just Cupertino coffee shops or bound to an office desk. So I expect Apple to restore the SD drive and add a legacy USB 3 port. Things like big LIDARs cost $100k - you don't change kit like that because your laptop maker has decided it does not like the shape of the ports. IF Apple is definitively is not going to fix the problem then my next laptop will not be an Apple. If I swap I will investigate Hackintosh or take the hit on cross-grades; it will be a shame as MacOS is the best UNIX there is - i.e. it is real UNIX, but with decent application support compatible with the Windows world. I also like kludgy old Xcode for development, but hey if I am forced to adapt I'll adapt - Visual Studio may have improved in the decade and a half I have been away. What I won't do is continue down the blind alley Apple seems to started down; my first Mac was a Quadra 840AV - I am not the sort of customer Apple should be so keen to lose.
