It just sounds like you could use a dock.
Well, no actually my rMBP 2015 has all the ports I need...that's kinda the point... The 2016 is kinda like they stripped all the ports aways and said if you want them get a dock... which is kinda backwards but future forward, if you want the ports without a dock and external power supply for the dock, you just get a 2015...

It would have cost Apple pennies in their sort of volumes to include some adaptors in the box. They used to include USB and FireWire cables with the IPod I got in 2004 for instance.

I just played the currency game and converted my Swedish price of the entry level 2016 15 MBP back to USD: $2971.45. For a laptop with 256 GB storage. It is insane. Doing the same conversion for a 15" Kaby Lake HP laptop that would work for me gives $770, which is less than half of what the entry level rMB costs. Yes, I know, apples and oranges but still. I have waited, I wanted macOS, the touch bar and touch id would be useful, but it is very hard to justify buying a Mac at the current price levels. Looks like Santa will bring me a PC for Christmas.

It is already the best selling laptop

Yea, right... Until they release sales figures, I don't believe them anything. Look at this:

http://www.gsmarena.com/microsoft_s...high_demand_not_due_to_alleged-news-15803.php

You can find same things for surface tablets, especially first two editions. But after sales figures, it was pretty obvious that they didn't even produce that many.

Until they release figures, I don't believe anything. And even if they sold many, it's coz lot of people were waiting for a long time for a refresh. We will see if they keep these prices how many will they sell in 2-3 years.

had an awful dream where Apple finally announced the MBP we all wanted but it looked more like this:

was called the 'New Powerbook', and the trackpad has Apple Pencil support... along with the usual set of USB-A ports and ethernet.. I'm losing my mind..

I really wanted to refresh my old macbook. No Kaby lake is a deal killer though. I really NEED a new laptop by February. Would there be a refresh by then, perhaps? Or, I might as well buy one now if they're not gonna change anything by then anyway?

These prices nowadays though, ouch...

They aren't going to refresh a new MBP within the first three months of release.

Hmmmmmm :/ I guess I might as well order one some day soon. These older chips are really holding me back though. Tough call.

Assuming your current laptop is older than a 2012 MacBook Pro. There's not even a 25% improvement between my 2012 base 15" rMBP i7 and the new model. The 13" models are up to 40% slower even.

I think that's one of the major sticking points, I think Apple could have garnered some goodwill (or at least mitigated some of the complaining), if they did that.

I think they felt the heat, because they did cut the price of the dongles for the rest of the year.

Don't see the 32gb RAM inside sticker:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Yup the Intel Fairy will produce a suitable Kaby Lake MBP CPU in time:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

There will be not update for a another 12 months... if you need one now and you can afford it, then buy it.

Guess I'll wait, then. :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
The absolute best case would be for them to put a Kaby Lake refresh in March, so you'd still have to wait till April to get it. But they might wait until October 2017 to launch Cannonlake, so that will make you wait for another year.

Informative, thanks.

The one thing that I wish I could somehow magically move from 2016 to 2015 is the SSD. Processor upgrade is near zero. CPU upgrade would be welcome. But a SSD that reads 3 GB/s? Damn. I'll have that.

So from what I've been reading about the 13" is that kaby lake has worse igpu performance. Maybe this is why apple skipped it and will update to coffee lake when available? It supposed to be better than sky lake and way better than kaby. I guess it's the time to buy if you're in the market for a 28w CPU.

Or maybe it's about time Apple bit the bullet and went into full Jobsian mode and brought the processors/graphics in-house too. Would remove the last big dependency on others for their hardware updates.

Things like big LIDARs cost $100k - you don't change kit like that because your laptop maker has decided it does not like the shape of the ports
You don't have to, right? Simply get the appropriate USB-C to USB cable.

Actually, USB sounds pretty good to me. In the past, I've struggled with (very accurate) multimeters that required GPIB connectors. National Instruments asked a cool $500 for these USB-monstrosities:

050318_gpib_usb_l.jpg

And even then it was a struggle to get the drivers working on our Linux workstations.

Sorry, I'm ranting :p I'd completely forgotten about these since changing jobs but your post reminded me of that struggle :p

wow, the first benchmarks coming out on the 2016 models are... depressing. is that what we've been waiting for?
Yup, I have the feeling that's the state of CPUs nowadays.

Very interesting quote from the Ars Technica review: "Even if you’re upgrading from a 2013 model, the speed increases here aren’t amazing. The equivalent 2015 model had a CPU that was about 100MHz faster, which just about wipes out the modest architectural improvements that Skylake brings to the table. It’s better if you’re coming from a 2011 or 2012 model, though still not earth-shattering—if you’re desperate for a CPU upgrade, make sure the new Pro you buy has a faster-clocked CPU than your old one. That’s going to make more of a difference than the improved CPU architecture will."

It's really weird like that.

And Kaby Lake is not going to be any better. No need to wait, as already said before. Unless you're waiting on Cannonlake, and even then you'll get 5%. Maybe 10% performance boost. 3 years wait? Good luck!

KL has hardware 4K decoding, how would it not an improvement in battery life? Early reports of these new mbps have really terrible battery life (Apple downsized the battery, while power consumption of the chips remained more of less the same efficiency). Ignore the drop in ports and magsafe, battery issues alone far outweighs the gain of touch-bar and thinner profile.

so you think KL will have more battery life? like what +1 2 3? dreams, battery life now is down to the architecture and KB will not be a new one, so the battery life will be almost the same

15" GPUs Radeon 450, 455 and 460 already do hardware decoding (KL could be an improvement for 13" users, if they have that 4K decoding need).

Thus, draining the battery. On a side note, the update this year would have been great if
1. Power cord is a magnetic usb-c to replace the magsafe
2. Without the price hike
3. 32GB ram option for real professionals (just stick a label saying 32GB ram will significantly hamper your battery life)
4. Keep the sd slot perhaps? (usb-a and sd-slot is negotiable for decreased weight and size)
