wow guys, while browsing reviews of the Kaby Lake XPS 13" i came across this graph that clearly shows what HEVC hardware acceleration does:
dell_xps_13_kaby_lake_4k_10_bit_hevc_tears_of_steel_255_nits_battery_life-100685721-orig.png

10 hours battery life while playing 4k videos
vs. 3 hours for the skylake model.

full review here.

Didn't they drop the base price of the RMBP in 2013?

Yes, they did. I'm feel reasonably confident that we'll see a price drop at the next tech refresh so Apple can "put the incredible performance of the new MacBook Pro into the hands of more customers".

Sweet, gonna buy this puppy and slot it right into my laptop!

You must show us how this can be done! ;)

Seriously, just emphasizing that Apple are taking us for a ride in terms of the premium they're charging for the Radeon graphics. If we're able to buy a better GPU from Amazon, then Apple, in the quantities they buy in, can put these chips into laptops for pennies.

You do understand that the 470 is the Polaris 10 die (same as 480 just a few disabled compute units). They would never put a 100+ watt GPU into a MBP. Thats why the new MBPs have the smaller Polaris 11 die.

Well, it's not as simple as just comparing prices Apple is charging with an expansion card that can fit into any standard desktop motherboard.

We are paying for the engineering that Apple needs to do to fit that entire card (essentially) down into a small spot on the PCB of a very thin laptop, keep it reasonably cool, and try to make it as reliable as possible while at the same time integrating it with all the other system parts on a shared PCB. It takes a lot of custom engineering to do that and that engineering costs money. I'm also fairly sure that the specific mobile chips Apple is using are manufactured on a more advanced process that makes them thinner than the desktop variants enabling Apple to accomplish all of this so that could be an added cost.

Sad to see what other can do.
The new Razer Blade just got announced. Case like last model Macbook Pro. 14". Quadcore skylake. USB-legacy, USB-C-TB3, HDMi, minidisplay port. MATTE 1080p screen, and a full fat GTX 1060. I hate razer. But that thing is a tech-marvel.
Wish there'd be a non-tb 15" macbook pro with a GTX 1040 (that would suffice).

i am not buying a laptop with the silly emoji bar. it's time for me to slowly drift away from apple.
OSX is fine for casual use, it's user friendly and doesn't need particular maintenance. i think the 12"mb is the best apple laptop as of today. for anything else i already use windows (or windows software: office) for work, so it's not a big change for me.

damn, does the xps feels cheap in comparison! a decently spec'd quad core 15" is cheaper than the measly 15w 13" macbook pro. and i can upgrade ram and ssd when prices will be lower!

The new Razer is gorgeous, it's everything I would want out of a Notebook but is 14" and I'd be worried about being disappointed losing some size.. I don't know, maybe see how I like the new MacBook before deciding.

I wanted to buy an updated MBP or Air this year but Apple appears to have canceled the Air and significantly raised the price on the Pro.

What do you think of buying the new XPS 13 which starts at less than than half the price of the TB MBP? I swore off Windows machines 5 years ago but I am tempted to give them another chance since Apple has nothing competitive at the moment.

I have to say, I'm seriously considering jumping ship too.
I'm more interested in the Razer Blade Pro which has 17.3" 4K LED screen, i7-6700HQ 2,6 GHz, 32Gb RAM, and the new GTX 1080 GDDR5 8Gb VRAM.
I don't know when it will be for sale, but that's the tech specs I expect from a Pro notebook going on 2017.
I'm worried about the switch to Windows, but life sucks sometimes.
I don't feel like Apple is addressing me as a customer any more. Which is fine, I guess, break-ups happen. But I'm not sticking around like some fool.
I'd love to get some opinions, though. Anyone heard of these laptops? Willing to give input?

Just curious as to what your use cases will be with the above Razer laptop

I'm getting into 3D content creation which I think will become more and more requisite in my field of work (content creation/adaptation for brands' communications). Since I've barely just broken through the surface of the discipline I need a lot of elbow space to faff about and trial-and-error around. Those ridiculous GPU specs that Apple is clinging to simply won't allow any professional content creators to brace themselves for the VR revolution.
I'm fine paying more because things look nice, because there's a vibrant creative community, hell, I'm even fine with following them through radical decisions like converging all the ports. But if I can't even render 3D content with the top of the line (laptop or desktop); then I'm only sabotaging my relevance as an industry professional.
Sorry, I feel like I'm ranting now...

Makes sense, I understand. That just sounds like a beast of a product, I'd personally probably build a Windows desktop with immensely more power in the CPU and GPU for a fraction of that laptop cost. I'm considering that anyways for VR gaming atm actually

Yeah, but I already have a desktop computer (MP 5.1 with the Titan X EFI). And since I do need a laptop (I travel abroad for long periods on end for work), I figured might as well get one that won't force me to delay work 'until I get home'.
Besides, it's the same price (in Europe) as the new 15" MB"Pro" (maxed out options) and almost double the specs in every field.
Yes, it's bigger, yes, it's heavier. Probably a whole lot louder. But, honestly, I don't care. And I think I'm not the only pro-user who doesn't.

I don't wanna sound like I'm blindly defending this laptop I never heard of before a few hours ago, though. I'm still open to any comments or opinions from the community.
Like a comment I just came accross under a review saying:
"The question you should be asking is why did Razer pair a 6700HQ with a 1080? It's a recipe for bottlenecks."
Is that true? Does anyone know? Also I'm reading some concerning comments about Razer's customer service; I've always been very content with Apple's reactivity and solving skills whenever anything went wrong so... that could be a deal breaker.
Sorry, maybe this should be a thread of its own...

Yeah I've been looking on Razer forums and it's almost like a copy of Macrumors.. complaints about throttling, performance, thermals.. Looks like they also went for thin amazing design but sacrificed hardware.

I'm back on the fence.

Funny. I'm right there with you. Plus I've been trying to look into these claims of horrible customer service. People claiming their stuff simply breaks after a few months and "the warranty doesn't cover it".
So yeah, back on the fence.
