Not to brag or 'I told you so', but I will! :p I said on April 21st Apple would likely update the MacBook Pros at WWDC. It's a vibe I was picking up when Apple missed updating the MacBook. Apple has done this kind of thing in the past. Given Apple's renewed interest in the Mac & the competition coming from Microsoft & Google, it seems rather obvious that Apple needs to keeps its head in the game.

ATM (unfortunately) it's just a rumor so, please, return to your crystal sphere and your fortune teller license. :p

So, where are all the apologists then? All the "Skylake is just as good as Kaby Lake, so there" & "Who really needs 32Gb RAM anyway?" posters that flooded this forum after getting the 2016 model? Guess what - you were wrong after all.

If I'd bought a current model MBP, I'd be quite unhappy at these proposed updates coming so quickly after the initial release. But it is nice to see Apple catching up with Dell I guess.

Users are unhappy if apple does not update their products for a long time....
Users are unhappy if apple does update very often their products
.....plz tell Apple whats the specific time for them to update them to be happy !

It is not so quick. 9 month was the standard cycle time.

You may well be correct. I think though that the 1st generation of these MBPs were rushed out by Apple, before the newer architecture components were available.
they did the same with the first gen retina mbps. new form factor in june and updated specs and prices in february. 9 months later.
and more or less the same with the first gen unibody presentation (15") oct 2008, updated june 2009

Just please make the TouchBar optional across more configurations and on the 15"

Do you recall - Did prices change then or did the new models just slot into existing price spots?

Any chance Apple reduces the price? I feel like the 13 inch with function keys should start at $1299 and the 13 inch with the touch bar should be like $1699 or even $1599

15 inch should be like $2199

i may be wrong but i think that the only "price drop" was for the base model of the 15"retina once they introduced the iGPU-only model, so no real prices drops.
it's important to notice that the mid 2012 (first retina) and the early 2013 retina was almost the same mac, just a minor speed bump, same GPU, same price same everything.
the first real change came almost 18 months later the first introduction of the retina macbook pro, in fact apple introduced a new cheaper (200$ less) base model with 256gb storage, 8gb ram and iGPU only AND a dGPU version with 512gb ssd, 16gb of ram and nvidia 750m, at the premium of 600$ more than the previous generation.

In conclusion: no, no real price drops.

Prices dropped very aggressively for the 13" RMBPs with the first 2 spec bumps. The higher end 15" RMBP gained additional RAM even when the price didn't drop.

13" RMBP 128GB $1699 (Oct 2012) -> $1499 (Feb 2013) -> $1299 (Oct 2013)
13" RMBP 256GB $1999 (Oct 2012)-> $1699 (Feb 2013) -> $1499 (Oct 2013)
15" RMBP 256GB $2199 (Jun 2012) -> $2199 (Feb 2013) -> $1999 (Oct 2013, lose dGPU)
15" RMBP 512GB $2799 (Jun 2012) -> $2799 (Feb 2013, 8GB RAM bumped to 16GB) -> $2599 (Oct 2013)

you got to be kidding me.

You'd need to read the entire Waiting for Skylake MBP thread I'm afraid, it's worth it if you have two weeks with nothing to do :D

We still have to print the whole thread and make a book, don't we?

What dGPU upgrades to we expect at WWDC?

I honestly don't expect any dGPU upgrade.

With all the issues the 2016 models have had, I can understand why Apple wants to get something new out on the market sooner than later, especially when the appropriate Kaby Lake processors have been available for a while now

What are all the issues you are talking about? Also, appropriate Kaby Lake CPUs have not been available.
The Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ Processor was launched in Q1 2017.
:)

Anyway, those recently moves of Apple feel really strange.
I'm curious to see where they will end up.

You already know what they will end up with: "new watch bands for everyone! Oh and from now on iCloud free space will be reduced to 1gb" *sorry, we're not sorry*

Btw I think the same, CPU upgrade/speed bump but no GPU upgrade or maybe they will discontinue the base dGPU and keep the mid and the top with some more vram, No 32gb RAM option imho.
Probably they will revise the assembly to get a more reliable keyboard and maybe they will introduce a 15" with no touch bar (my personal dream).
Unfortunately I don't think we will ever see a 15" without a dGPU since in that case would be impossibile to drive 1000x5k displays with the integrated one

My hope is they mention a new and improved keyboard, though I still am a doubting Thomas with regard to them doing anything at WWDC. We'll see and its only a few weeks away.

A fair amount of Intel's kaby lake chips for laptops have been available since Q3 2016. That particular chip came out earlier this year, yes (though for me Q1 still does qualify as a while ago) But there were appropriate chips for some of their lineup at the time of release in late october-mid November. In theory, apple could have had some kaby lake chips for some of their lineup akin to how the previous gen MBP lineup had both 4th/5th gen chips. There's not much difference between Skylake and kaby lake so it doesn't matter from a consumer perspective, safari and logic will both run just as well on each. Overall this is a good move by Apple to launch in the summer rather than wait until fall.

The current lineup didn't exactly release without more controversy than apple laptop releases tend to receive and not without reason either. I can't speak for anyone else but myself - the new MBPs were a headache in terms of the battery life and keyboard issues. Poor battery life sealed it for me.

As far as I know they are already using an "improved" keyboard, just a little different from the one in the early batches, to prevent the wide diffused issue where some keys don't respond to the press if the machine gets a little hotter.
Anyway, in my dream they just update the old retina with kabylake and tb3/usbc ports

Could you share where you got this info from? I mean the improvements on the keyboard? I am curious.

To be honest the only reason i'm leaning towards believing the WWDC updates is because it's come from Mark Gurman at Bloomberg he is very rarely wrong! I do think it's a lot for Apple to announce tho, with all software announcements, a new iPad 10.5" as well as a Siri Speaker announcement. But if they are just spec updates to the MacBook Pro's and 12" MacBook they may be just short announcements like "and by the way we have today updated the MacBook Pro and 12" MacBook with the latest processors" and nothing else said beyond that.

Its very hard to believe that Apple will NOT release any new macs...since Mark Gurman made that statement with so little time ahead...

I really wish the Pro's basically had the Magic Keyboard in them.
It uses more proven scissor switches and it feels and sounds sensational.

friend of mine brought his 2016 mbp to repair 2 times for the good old keyboard-not-responding-when-hot-gate.
the first time they completely changed the top case and keyboard, the second time they just applied some shims.
the new one should have the shims already installed, as far as i know.
