Now that the 2016 Models are out, will you buy a 2016 Model?

  • No, They increased the cost far to much. The Apple i once new loved appears to have disappeared.

Did the refurb prices on MacBook Pros go down recently? Just found one (2.7 GHz i7, 512 GB SSD, Radeon Pro 460) for €2,719 at the refurbed section of the Apple online store, and a 15" base model for €2,290. Those are pretty sweet deals, considering that higher end model costs €3,319 new.

I'll still wait for the update, since my guess is that the prices on new machines will go down, or at least that we'll get a 512 GB SSD at that €2,699 price point they're currently asking for the 15" base model. My 2009 MacBook Pro will have to do just a little longer - I believe in you, Intel Core 2 Duo!

By the way, does anyone think there's the chance for a bigger graphic upgrade than just to AMD's 500 series Polaris chips (which seem to be less than 10% faster)? AMD Vega is supposed to launch in June, maybe Apple gets something special a little early from AMD?

If the returb prices do go down further, they will be a bargain ! Already they are very tempting.

Hopefully Apple does get something early from AMD on the Vega GPU all though I am not holding my breath. The days of Apple at the bleeding edge seem to have gone and everything is incremental.

I'm currently in the market for a new tbMBP 13. I'll be replacing my 2012 MBP 13. I'm definitely waiting for Kaby Lake, whenever that may be.. After reading about a possible correlation between low battery life and 16gb RAM (regardless of how crazy it is) can we start a poll?? Battery life between tbMBP 8gb and 16gb. That might help shine some light..

this low power RAM excuse Apple trotted out is a bunch of hooey. The principle root cause is that Apple solders the RAM chips onto the logic board as a purely 2-D , planer solution. To go up to 32GB Apple needs denser RAIM chips. They would need the same number of chips as the 16GB solution uses. They really aren't any. Without denser RAM chips they have to expand the logic board. That would mean cutting into the battery volume. The decreased battery volume is where the root cause power problem would be.

The other easy solution is to back off the thinness slight and go back to so-DIMMs which are a far more efficient use of volume since not purely a 2-D solution. Yeah the so-DIMMs would be DDR4 but since increased the volume for partial stacking the so-DIMM can also crank up the battery to match. There wouldn't necessarily be any net loss in system battery life. It just takes more volume than Apple is self imposed restraints provide.

Some future LPDDR 4 implementations are going to get denser and will un-paint Apple out of the corner.

Actually 32Gb LDDR4 chips have been out for a while now...the main issue is that non of intel's chips support it. There is no support for LDDR4 in either Skylake, Kabylake, nor coffelake...support is planned for cannon lake, but that could been 2018.

Not sure why they don't just use 24Gb LDDR3 chips which are also available...id be just as happy with 24GB of ram. Guys they don't like non power of 2 RAM numbers.

Anyone know the best source to see the performance differences between the baseline graphics (intel 620) and the better iris options?

Sounds like the newer macbooks might go fully discrete?

Check out notebookcheck.com - they got a full database and benchmarks of all notebook gpu solutions, including Intels integrated ones.

Having said that, the Iris 550 and Iris Pro chips are surprisingly capable, to a point where I don't believe Apple would want to include a dedicated GPU and the power it would consume in the 13" MBP.

Powerful enough to run Rocket League over bootcamp perhaps?

I am in waiting for a 13" MBP TB to replace my 2008 Aluminum Macbook - no rush to replace, just would rather not get a rev 0 of a new notebook, especially if I'd like it to last as long as my current one has...

Also trying to figure out if it'll be possible to do 4K @ 60Hz @ 4:4:4 over HDMI... It's all very confusing, to be honest

I want to know if I should by a MacBook Pro now and return it if they announce Kaby Lake ones at WWDC or wait until the event and then buy one.

With it being just a week or so away, I'd wait and see personally. Knowing my luck this year though, they'll probably hike the price even more haha

seems we are getting iris 630 640 and 650 for the MBP, bigger battery inside the 13" TB will get the same as the nTB -54.5
and for the 15" instead of 76.0 we get 81.0

This thread won't get long enough for the "Waiting For Skylake MBP" book, but we could include it as bonus in the special edition I guess.

Dear Tim, if you are reading, please don't update MBPs until at least 2019! We want to do a trilogy you know.

Apple has debuted new Intel chips in the past and it was a complete surprise. Perhaps we're on track for Coffeelake.

Intel is actaully under pressure from AMD so we might see a surprise. However, Gurmans report was pretty specific about chips so im not too hopeful.

Based on reports it looks like new Kaby Lake+ new Battery in June then in October we may see a new power model launched with Coffee or maybe even Cannon?? 32gb ram. maybe more ports?

I personally don't think that we get new MacBook Pro in WWDC, maybe an updated MacBook 12'. Since Intels 15/28W (GTe3) and 45W (GTe2) Coffee Lake are scheduled for Q2 2018, Apple will probably update the MacBook Pro to Kaby lake in October 2017 and Coffee lake in October 2018. Btw, I don't think Intel released the Iris HD650 chips yet and even tough Gurman claimed new chips in WWDC, I still don't think Apple will release a new MacBook after 7 months. Their most popular product (iPhone) is updates once in a year, don't expect that to happen with their MacBooks.

WWDC will be for software, just like previous years! Take my word with a huge spoon of salt (maybe French mustard), but defiinitely don't surprised if apple won't release anything except beta software.

I asked this exact question in ... February? And then I started a poll on the topic. The overwhelming consensus was that I was nuts for asking the question, when battery life depends more on screen brightness, use of peripherals, workload, etc. Because of those factors, the poll results were somewhat meaningless.

But I have been reading these forums like a lunatic as I try to hold out for exactly what I want, at the right price, and choose the thing that is not the wrong thing. And I have noticed a really strong correlation between the people complaining about the battery and the people talking about their 16gb models.

Honestly, it's one of the things that has made me hold off on buying.
