You will have to forgive my ignorance but... I've been looking at the 13" Dell XPS and it has a 4-core 8th gen intel chip, couldn't that be used in the MBP?

I don't know how many issues there have been with the keyboard (Apple probably have the feedback and data) but like i said you will always see people complaining on forums about things, that's not to say there haven't been issues but are they isolated issues? meaning is it a widespread problem for the majority of buyers? i can't speak from experience as i don't own one of the newer MacBook Pro's (i'm still using my 2011 MacBook Pro) until i upgrade.

The trackpad size is more down to personal preference, not everybody is going to like it. I guess we will have to see what Apple do, if they release a major redesign of the keyboard then we know there are issues! As for soldered on SSD's and any other parts i personally don't mind as i buy what i need at the time but again that is personal preference.

Ignoring data or personal experiences or quality control - from an engineering/design perspective, the issues of the keyboard are not unexpected. It is a flaw or a con of the design, similar to how say TN vs IPS vs VA will each have different pros and cons. The design itself has resulted in issues which would not occur in previous designs.

It’s like a massive track pad will increase chance of false presses and/or change ones resting position. Whether it affects you personally or not, it is just something that will happen as a resultant is the design.

Also, I hope there are huge changes for macOS because despite the issues of W10, I find macOS to be pretty lacking nowadays.

Just curious, what sort of changes or additions are you looking for? I haven't used Windows regularly since Windows 7 was the thing so I'm probably missing some things, but the only thing I can think of that I am missing out on is more flexible snapping of windows (which would be great to get on macOS, don't get me wrong.)

Personally my biggest indicator that we will not see anything right away is that there is nothing chip wise that has been announced that would cover the 13" and 15" laptops from an upgrade perspective.

I agree we probably won't see MacBook Pro upgrades until at least WWDC, but I don't think that Intel not having announced the appropriate chips is necessarily a determining factor on the timing. There is precedent for Apple releasing new laptops with new chips at the same time as Intel announces the new chips. It's happened at least twice in fairly recent memory.

Only if you are dumb enough to redesign your machine to be uselessly thin, therefore slashing 25% of your battery capacity, like Apple did on the 2016 MBP.

If the rMBP stayed as thick as the previous generation (which NOBODY thought was too thick), with the same battery, the use of DDR4 (even 32GB) coupled with the more energy efficent internals would have had a negligible impact on battery life (from 10hrs to 8 hrs tops, perfectly acceptable)...

Again, IMHO it was a solution to a non existent problem....
They have always been a design over function company. You clearly haven’t been paying attention. They change the design and let the tech catch up.

It’ll be June time the ... I can’t see Apple waiting until Fall to launch the new ones, that’s so far away. I imagine people are holding off now for the 2018 model... the longer the wait, the more money they lose in sales?

IDK, I just bought a 2017 15in MBP with 3.1ghz processor 1tb hdd + Apple Care. I think the majority of users who need a MBP don't care if / when the next model will be released.

I am - the 6 core cpu and possible Vega GPU are things that will make a difference to me. I can't stand lag on my machines which I have experienced on recent computers. The iMac pro I am on right now is the only Mac I have had for quite a while that works at a pace that I need. I certainly dont expect the MBP to be the same, but the rumoured specs should provide a more fluid experience in my use.

I have the same mind set as you do except I'm coming from being a 30 year Windows user. Overall, OSX has been a much more reliable and faster experience than my previous top spec custom PC build. I was set on waiting for the latest chip and GPU until I tried a MBP at the store and fell in love with it. It handles my 3d modeling and slicing needs effortlessly and with insane speed. So right now this suits my needs.

Getting back to OPs query, if you need it buy it.

In most cases, probably not. But given the fact that new MBP is probably few months from release. And with 99% certainty we are going to get quadcore and hexacore upgrades, we are talking major performance benefits here.

Plus probably(hopefully) some improvements to the keyboard durability.

It would be stupid not to wait.

Agreed, wait if possible. Many times there’s not a big difference in CPU performance from one year to the next. But this year is different.

I’m really at the end now with my 2008 Pro.

Really had hoped for an update today and don’t think I can make it for another 3 months plus. My income will start to be affected. I can pretty much only word process on this thing.

My fear, the resale value of a 15” 2017 will plummet when the new 2018s are announced. I will be able to claim back my VAT, however, I’m concerned even that won’t cover a loss as the keyboard issue really worries me. True, the only reports online are problems and not happy users but there just seems too many so early on. Bit of a catch 22 for me. Arghhh. Help!!!

Personally if you need one right now or else your job or income will be negatively affected, then I‘d get one right now. I understand that the situation is a bit tricky with a new model right around the corner, but you pretty much answered what the best course of action is for yourself: if you cannot wait 3 more months (which would be the expected waiting time in case of a WWDC release) without parts of your life suffering from it, then you should buy one right now. The current models are capable machines, yes you would be missing out but for you the new model would simply be an expense for your work/job/income.

The keyboard issues are a legitimate concern, but I wouldn‘t worry about it too much. There‘s a good chance you‘ll never encounter them, and if you do and it‘s within warranty, Apple will cover the replacement. If you‘re really worried that they might pop up at some point and you cannot afford the replacement then, it would be advisable to buy AppleCare with the machine so that you‘re covered for 2 years instead of 1; but as I said, there‘s a good chance you might never encounter them so I wouldn‘t live in fear of it.

Thanks afir93 for the advice.

I see the Apple store is now down. No harm in waiting 24 hours out of interest. Even a new MacBook Air has the potential to tide me over for 6 months and I can pass onto my son.

If you need a laptop, then buy it. I just bought the 2017 15" and i don't regret it, I love it! Wait a few hours after this event and then go for it.

Oh, yeah I should add I would in either case wait out what today's event brings, in case Apple surprises us with new MBs/MBPs a bit earlier than expected which isn't completely out of question.

There were some people doubting if Apple even releases new hardware at all today with how education-focused the event is... I suppose that the Apple Online Store goes offline confirms that they will. Only question is what will it be.

MBP today is out of question, but it surely doesn't hurt to wait a few hours. Apple could always shock us...
