Two ways:
1 - Display density. It looks like **** compared to the Retina Display.
2 - Taptic feedback.

What will 1 + 2 help against a contra-ergonomic handling - Everybody uses keyboard with fingertips (shortcuts and F-Keys) and maybe he wants to touch sometimes in between to a Touch Screen (like SURFACE has) because his concentration lays on screen. Nobody with a fluent workflow wishes to change to glide on a Touch Bar with a menu always changing... he will always prefer typing on F-keys - very clear :D - but also this Touch Screen isn't really needed.

Touch ID alone would be an improvement - and with taptic feedback we could install Touch Bar F-keys for constant use - but what for?!
I'd better take MBP without TB :)

Still holding out with a 2011 model macbook =/

The next revisions seem worth waiting for though:

- Next model will have coffee lake which should bring a lot more performance and potentially more cores depending on the model
- REALLY want to try to hold out for AV1 hardware decoding, but that probably won't happen until at least 2019 =/

I'm mostly just REALLY sick of my fans spinning up like crazy for simple web browsing and media playback. It's annoying as hell, and making my macbook feel like a joke compared to even using my iphone for simple tasks.

Next Macbook pro will have indeed U series CPU i5 with 4 cores and 4 threads, but with GT2 graphic to keep lower TDP and cost. I'v give up from 15" macs because every generation have discrete GPU problem overtime.

Apple should introduce a integrated graphics 15 inch model MacBook Pro without Touchbar in the 1799 price range.

The 2016 and 2017 is fairly quiet if you don't game or encode.

I've used 13" and 15" 2017 MBP. Both are really quite. In that area, they are far better then 2015 version.

What's the best way to keep track of my temperature?
I use iStat menus. Very cool program. Not free, but you get I think a 15 day trial period.

So is it really possible to see a Mac Book Pro 13 quad core or Apple will stay on dual ?
If Intel releases a quad-core chip with a 28 watt TDP, I think a quad-core 13" is a very real possibility. The 13" (with touch bar) is already designed to cool a 28 watt part.

Should... YES - You'll never get, for sure :(

Apple and its strategy to force people to (nearly) senseless, workflow killing Touch Bar - every better high end version of MBP 13" and 15" will have Jony Ive's stuff  keep smiling :)

(((I hope HE reads his shame))) :D

We all know that there is a lot of subjectivity of what is worthy or not, or when is the right moment to upgrade from our current/older mbp, etc.

But following all this discussion from the start,
I wonder if, in the passage of time, there are mbp generations that really shine and be outstanding machines,
and make it a worthy and precious and even 'must have' upgrade,
for the majority of mbp users.

With Coffee Lake systems likely to be available by and even before the holidays, we are likely to see new MacBook Pro's before March 2018:

Its looking like a bad time to get the 2017 models released in June. Apple could do a update for the fall the accompany High Sierra.

Its always bad time. After coffee lake will come Ice lake 0.10 nm,after that north lake and etc... Problem in coffee lake U series with 4 cores is iGPU.We don't know will it be GT2e or GT3e

IMO, the Sandy Bridge update in 2011 brought big performance gains, and 2013 was the year the retina model became practical. Since then there hasn't been a really compelling update for me.

Agreed. I have the mid-2011 15", put an SSD in it along the way, and its still going strong 6 year later. I also have the 2014 (via work) that really isn't different from the 2013, which both have Haswell chips.

Coffee Lake will be unveiled next week, but I think Apple would be loathe to update their laptop line within 3 months. It would look like they have a lack of faith in their mid-2017 update, and they want to get the most out of their most current line. Releasing another laptop this quickly would cannibalize their sales for back to school shopping if the news leaks and students are willing to hold out a month or two for a laptop.

However, I am slightly optimistic for a refresh by November or so in time for Christmas shopping. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but ~6 months seems like a more likely wait time for a refresh. So maybe they will announce an upcoming late Fall/early winter update alongside introducing High Sierra. For me personally it would be an opportune time to upgrade from my mid-2014 model!

Before March 2018 but no later looks realistic. Intel even announced the successor to Coffee Lake today code named Ice Lake. Apparently, Cannon Lake 10+ will exclusively be a mobile release, while Ice Lake 10++ will include yields for both desktop and laptops. So, we are gonna see a mix release going into 2018: New iMacs with Coffee Lake for a while and MacBook Pro's rapidly moving from Coffee Lake (early 2018) to Cannon Lake (late 2018). So, an Ice Lake MacBook Pro would be around June 2019.

Also, Apple could also throttle the releases: Retina MacBooks with Coffee Lake in March, WWDC 2018 MacBook Pro's with Coffee Lake. Repeat it again for Cannon Lake.

No

Coffee lake is for chips with high TDPs like the 35 TDP that is in the MBP.

Cannonlake is 10nm and is going to be for lower TDPs like you find in the Air. Intel is still having trouble getting good yields out of the high TDP variants so they may skip it entirely and go straight to Icelake.

In short it's likely Intel may never deliver - or deliver super late chips suitable for a MBP so it may be skipped entirely.

It's a bad time to buy something in August because a new model might come out in March? This thread makes me laugh.
