Hasn't apple always played catchup with windows in terms of raw specs? The tradeoff is that with a closed ecosystem you minimize bugs, viruses, catastrophic failures which means that actual performance is typically very close comparing same gen. computers.

I think people tend to give this argument more weight than it's worth.

The stability that OSX offers means that you don't have to deal with any strange driver issues and you don't have to worry about an update not working properly given a particular custom software configuration, but at least in my experience using Windows, I haven't had either be a problem.

Limited hardware configurations is the price that needs to be paid to guarantee the sort of stability that Apple can offer with its products, but that just means Apple needs to optimize for a small set of hardware. There's no constraint, from that perspective, on how powerful those components can or should be.

The limits in the power that the MBP offers on the GPU side comes more from where Apple's decided to place themselves on the portability/performance slider. In previous years, this was more of an issue than it was now, on account of official eGPU support meaning that meaningful year-over-year improvements on the GPU side of things aren't going to outdate your MBP as fast, since progress on the CPU side has been creeping along very slowly, the SSD is already incredibly fast, and RAM prices being high means that we're not going to see major increases in capacity on that front, either.

So what do you guys think i should do? Purchase 2017 macbook pro make sure i get the apple care just in case keyboard takes a ****
What's your use case? If you're planning on paying full retail price, I would wait. If you can find a deal or something (I got an Apple refurb 13" TB for $15xx), it might be better to buy current gen.

Looks like I’ll be saving a shed load of money - thanks apple.

Will buy an external ssd and do a clean os install to get the shiny new feeling on my 2013 MBP.

As I have said elsewhere, eGPU use and support is essentially of zero priority for mb/p users. They can get their gaming fix elsewhere, whether that's with a console or with windows. And this is at far less cost and with a zillion more titles to select from btw. Even if eGPU support made a difference for anyone, which it doesn't, it doesn't negate the terrible design compromises inherent in the 16+ mb/p's.

I unfortunately can’t wait until October. I need a Mac in just over a week (I’ve just taken a few months off work to pursue some personal goals). I really don’t want to buy a 2017 MacBook Pro so seeing as it’ll almost always be used in my apartment I think I’ll go with a 5K iMac. I know it’s also not the latest hardware but what do you all think about the iMac with maxed CPU and the 512 SSD? Which CPUs are in the latest iMac?

Applecare is just a good option period for laptops, whether new, refurb, or if there's remaining warranty on a used computer.

Here's the question. I need a high-spec *nix laptop (no VM, dualboot okay.) My computer retina MBP is on its last legs and probably needs a screen repair to be used again. Do I repair it and hold out for new MBP, go with a high-specced Windows laptop and dual-boot Linux ( I think Linux on Windows is a form of VM if I remember correctly) or try the Hackintosh route? I am very comfortable with OS X after so many years... but I would regret waiting for October only to have a laptop that doesn't do hexacore.

I can’t wait either. I’ve already waited 3 months.

The iMac 27” is great, at least to me. I work with Illustrator, and also play games on it (rofl).

Sigh. Now I think I should never have sold my 2015 27”. Zzz.

Ended up searching eBay and found a new - sans box - 15” 2017 base MBP with AC+ until 01/21. It’s from a reliable seller as well. It cost $1900. My refurb MBP 13 + AC+ cost $1942 after taxes.

I think I’ll keep the 15” since it’s the better deal, even though I prefer the portability of the 13. I’ll see when I get both delivered.

What a day..

Hey man - your post stuck out to me and figured I could help out. I work for Red Hat, so I feel your pain.

Dell XPS works with linux. But the HP Spectre (not AMD Vega) actually has out of the box support inside Linux and almost every thing works OTB for both Ubuntu and Fedora. Bluetooth, Touchscreen, Touchpad, Wifi, etc. The HP Spectres can be had for a spell, they have thunderbolt and usb3 as well as USB3 Charging and are touchscreen with a pen (x360).

So you might have an option there.

Its a ****ing miracle. Apple did release a (old) Mac today. And just for me.

This is the weirdest story you will ever hear I can almost guarantee you.

I've left my mid 2012 rMBP in a closet since February completely untouched after it suffered from major graphical issues that multiple force reboots could not correct. Then after WWDC being so disappointed with Apple I said F it I'll power up my rMBP and see if it magics itself into existence again. Well magically it did just that. Its working again and surprisingly it is sooooooo much faster than before it broke. My computer feels like it is brand new.

I don't know how this is possible but I believe in God right now for the first time. Never before did I ever think God could be real, but today I know the truth ;).

I was ready to cave and buy a 2017 MBP but God felt my pain and fixed my MBP.

Either God did this for me or I am a God. Either way I can definitely wait until later this year unless my computer breaks again!
[doublepost=1528170043][/doublepost]So if you want to make all your problems go away stop using your MBP for a couple months. Might work for you too!! JK probably a fluke. Also when I powered it up just now it had 65% battery so something weird is happening or my dorm was struck by lightning

IDK and I don't care

Well, at least Apple's retailers are happy. Prices for a 2017 MacBook Pro 15" 2.9 GHz 500GB SSD dipped to $2,399 a few weeks ago. Now, they're back up to $2,549 or more.

As for me, screw it! Even though my super reliable mid-2012 is struggling, there's no way I'm throwing down almost $3K for old tech. I just hope FCPX and Motion don't kill my current MacBook Pro before the 2018 models are released.

Now the real question is, what are we waiting for October? What's the new coming up in MBP? That will determine if one should wait for October or not.

I'm in 2 thoughts. At once I feel I should simply update because I need an update badly. At the other end, I feel there will be a totally new device with the better keyboard after 3 months (including July).

While 3 months may sound a lot for some and less for some the reality is it's not an iPhone or iPad that cost less. A good configuration cost a lot. And thus, if I wait for the latest device, I bring value to money rather than being impatient and buying an old device for the same price and knowing after 3 months there's the latest device at the same price.

I mean, it's a matter of 3 months but it would be a disaster if there is no major upgrade in MBP in October.

Edit:

When is the next Apple Event for Macs/iPad (Hardware)?

Will they release Macs/iPad in September? If not, when in October?

See, there is a GOD. And he, or she, is pissed at Apple too. LOL

I highly doubt that's going to be possible.

Let's face the fact that they haven't upgrade anything on Hardware side.

Now the question remains what are they going to upgrade and when? And is it going to be worth enough to wait for those upgrades?

I think we should move on and find these answers instead of going through Apple's disappointment. I'm actually very disappointed with Apple. But there's nothing much I can do and I need MAC OSX. Can't deal with Windows after using Mac OSX from last 10 years or more.

Edit:

I'm not a hardcore pro user but I do want to learn video editing so it would be at rookie's side.

What would really burn me If I buy MBP today

1) 4K Screen
2) Quad Core 13inch
3) Face ID
4) Better Keyboard (Ofcourse)

This is the only thing that's holding me to October. As I watch Netflix a lot, 4K screen would be divine for me.

Having Quad Core would set me for another next 4-5 years without much trouble and that too at the same price.

Face ID? Because it's better than Touch ID and there could be a lot more thins done through Face ID than Touch ID. One of the examples is Animoji. I don't use it, but at least I'll have the option and tomorrow I don't know if it comes to use to me or not.

Better Keyboard, yes. I've been reading a lot about the keyboard issue. It's not major unless you keep your food away from the keyboard but I don't want such hassles when I'm spending a good amount for a good laptop

Its obvious Apple is following its 2016/2017 Skylake/Kabylake pattern.

You will see the 2018 MacBook Pro in October/November, then you will see another update in June 2019 with the Canonlake Update.
