Even if Apple updates the keyboard, I believe they will stay silent. They updated it on 2017 MBP, and didn't say a single word about it.

Best we can hope for is that they say BF keyboard 3.0, but I'm 100% sure they won't say something like 'we fixed those faulty keyboards, sorry for that kb glitch' :)

I've not yet seen a single source that confirms that the 2017 MBP keyboard is any different than the 2016 MBP. There are two generations of the butterfly keyboard. The 2016 MPB had the second generation. The first generation debuted on the rMB in 2015, but the rMB now has the second generation as well.

I keep hearing conflicting information on the 2017 keyboard, I personally believe they did tweak the design, but many people swear they didn't. The issue they're facing now that they didn't in 2017, is that they acknowledged that the current design is defective, and not saying anything for a new model works against them, because the presumption will be its still the same defective keyboard.

I think the new MBPs will have an updated keyboard, but not in a significant way. The machine is so thin, I feel like there's not much else they can do. Is it me, or did we not hear of any keyboard complaints (other than getting used to the new key-travel) on the first generation of butterfly keyboard?

Same. I need new a laptop ASAP but I won't buy the 2017 model. I don't know how much longer I can wait.

Be careful what you wish for. I had a 2016 15”. But wanted to go back to a 13, so I decided to just move to a Win10 laptop as I have to use many windows apps like Revit and my life would be simpler. So I bought the XPS13. Beautiful machine completely let down by absolutely terrible support of the TB3 port. Never could even get an external monitor to work correctly. Then I got a Thinkpad X1carbon. Near perfect piece of hardware, but even then, the 16x9 screen was awful to work on.

Add that while Win10 is by far the best that Windows has been, it’s just not close to MacOS. No quick look or Spotlight makes sorting through thousands of documents a pain. Windows search is decent, but not nearly as effective as Spotlight. It’s also amazing what Windows users put up with in terms of little things like desktop icons moving to whatever screen they want when you move fron setup to setup. It’s also amazing how aggravating a little thing like printing has become in a network.

Thus I just went in and bought a current 13” MBP. I know new ones are coming, but so be it. I need to get stuff done now. I also think the keyboard issue is way overstated. My 16 has been perfect. As good as the Thinkpad KB is, once I got used to it, I actually prefer the butterfly now.

This. All of it. Just purchased a beautiful X1 Carbon and promptly returned it. The fan ran more than I liked and Windows just can’t compare to Mac just yet though 10 is easily the best version yet. It was also incredibly stable and fast.

I find myself wondering about Ubuntu on an XPS...

I'm sick and tired off waiting. Honestly starting to think about buying another brand laptop by now.

Do it.

In before the Windows brigade come to bash you and Apple with their Bill Gates shaped stick.

I've used and like Ubuntu, but the only thing that stopped me was apps, the apps I need are not available. I use the computer for remote access and that's done by gotomypc. My company blocks all other remote software and sadly gotomypc doesn't have a linux version. They used too, but evidently no longer

I also use Lightroom, and so adobe apps not there as well

I actually bought that, but returned it, because I thought apple would be rolling out a new MBP, as each day passes, I'm thinking to skip the MBP and just go back to the razer.
I've read pretty horrible things about the reliability of Razers, I wonder if their support is any good either. You may have done the smart thing.

After going through Razer support hell a few months back, I would never buy anything from them again. Having said that, there are a ton of other Windows based notebooks out there which look very tempting, like the Huawei MateBook Pro X, the Dell XPS series, the LG Gram or even the SurfaceBook / Surface Notebook series.

The machine was rock solid, very well made, I had no issues with temps, even though I was rocking with a hex-core coffee lake processor and a GTX 1060 (I didn't need the 1070). Dealing with support to process the RMA was simple enough and was efficient. That laptop, while only owning it for two weeks, was very solid, and all of the reviews that I've read and watched said similarly.

After going through Razer support hell a few months back,
I read at the time of the 2018 rollout of the new razer they changed to a new company and things have improved, both wait time on the phone and turn around times. I can't say its completely better, but only reporting what I read and experienced first hand.

The new XPS is a really nice looking laptop. I’ve heard very mixed things about reliability of them them so that scared me away. The X1 Carbon with the HDR screen is a great laptop as well.

Apple has until this Friday to release the hounds or else I’m going with a refurb base 2017 15” MBP.

They can either save me CDN$500 or take my $500 on a brand new 2018 unit. :p

Oh with a threat like that they better hurry! Else you're going to give them a lot of money for an outdated computer with a defective keyboard
Outdated?! You children are spoiled! I’m not gonna run Windows software on it, you know? Did you know that 2017 has the benefit of hardware HEVC decoding for videogoers like me? A new 2018 MBP will just be bonus...the 2017 is more than capable than most Windows laptops out there right now.

Oh, and the keyboard issue is overrated.

Makes me wonder if Apple will nix the refurbed 2016 and 2017 models if the problem can’t be comprehensively fixed without a (even minor) formfactor change. Does anyone know if they withdrew 2011 models from the refurb store once they acknowledged radeongate? Was the refurb store even a thing back in 2011?

Are you willing to take a chance with the keyboard?

Knowing that the keyboard issue is a bit overrated, I’m not concerned...it’s actually my favourite keyboard! Plus 4 years of warranty is not bad at all. If it fails, getting a new whole inside top replaced including batteries is bonus. It’s a win all the way!

Except many people with the failure had multiple failures and that means being without the laptop weeks at a time. I also don't believe it's overrated just my $.02

Have you heard of failings on new replacements? Also, we’re assuming every unit will fail...there is a lottery definitely, but the odds are not that bad at all.
I only see what people post here and a number of them if multiple replacements

My perspective is that I'm paying a premium amount for a premium computer, I don't want to buy one that has a known defect. Apple is selling a defective computer, pure and simple. Apple markets its computer as top of the line and so why give them a pass on this issue
