MBP $2,600 w/o AppleCare (which is crazy given the keyboard) 512GB of storage
Dell 2,100 for the 4k 512GB model with a superior GPU, upgradeable ram, storage and easy battery replacement.
Razer 2,200, Matte FHD display (I love that its matte), 512GB of storage upgradable components and a much better GPU and great looks

Is staying within the apple ecosystem worth four hundred dollars, especially when you consider the perception of the keyboard? On one hand the difference isn't as severe as I thought it was, yet on the other hand needing AppleCare may be a requirement and that pushes the boundary of affordability.

To me, it's absolutely worth that to stay in the Apple ecosystem. I can't stand development work in Windows and after using OS X (well, now macOS) for so long, Linux just feels a bit... boring, unpolished, and lacking in support for many things.

Oh, what is everyone's thought on the T2 chip addition? Being able to invoke Siri without having to touch your laptop.

"Hey Siri, Git Commit, Git Push"
:D:D:D

Well anyhow no sale for me. Too friggin expensive, no non-touch bar option I would consider

Well you can also get that Dell XPS with a FHD matte display with the 512GB, 16GB ram, and the 1050Ti (plus a larger battery) for $1699 (or even cheaper on sale / with ebates, etc).

I'm torn right now. I want a 15" laptop, but I just don't know if I can justify the Apple price for the Mac ecosystem. I already ditched my iPhone for a Pixel 2. Bought a Windows Desktop instead of an iMac... Maybe it is time for a Windows laptop - I don't know. Or maybe the best of both worlds. Keep the Windows desktop for gaming and stuff that pushes my machine, and a refurb 15" MBP for portability and less performance driven processing.

And the issue if they were to consider doing that is that at a stroke MacOS loses any edge it may have over Windows due to close hardware-software optimisation, as it will need to be made to run on a much wider configuration of hardware...
You're really quite talented at finding a negative angle on everything. Incidentally, there wouldn't be only one way of doing it, and they wouldn't have to lose that optimisation at all. But it doesn't matter since it would never happen anyway, hence the smiley.

Do you want an even thinner laptop, with 2D key's and sub-50wh batteries? Because I don't!

I have both, a 2015 13" (work machine) and a 2016 13" (bought myself). I'd rather lug around the thinner and lighter version. I think the limit of thinness/usability/form factor has been reached, any thinner and we're looking at tablet territory. If I have to get rid of one, definitely the 2015 would go.

I’m really not :p I know it will never happen, I was just pointing out the reason

Siri is still mostly useless, but could improve significantly with the addition of a "Siri Shortcuts" system to the Mac too. We should be able to use such commands, but it's way behind still.

The 4TB SSD upgrade is 3840€ in my home country, with the maxed out 15" selling for 8000€ (9,400 USD), lol... I'm curious whether there is really anyone in the world who would bite into such madness, you could build a monster workstation for the money of the SSD alone.

Fortunately I live in Japan now, because Apple is once again screwing us Europeans really bad.

In any case, finally a refresh worth buying, the only slight disappointment being the 2nd GPU rebadging in a row.
I'll likely be going with: Core i9, 32GB RAM, 1TB drive, and add external SSD storage as needed.

Well, my recent purchase of a used 2015 13" MBP still feels like a good decision. At least until they come up with a redesign that hopefully removes or de-emphasises the touchbar. Or at least provide a less-nerfed non-TB model. Or just give me a physical Esc key? Guess I'll sign up for the "Waiting for the 2019 MBP" thread. ;p

For myself as a developer: probably. "(Sort-of) Linux with better driver support" still slightly edges out Windows as an environment, even though the Apple tax is annoying, and I could certainly live with Windows if I had to. That might change as Microsoft adopts better Linux integration.

What I do is buy the laptop, then buy Applecare 10 months or so later. It at least makes me feel better about the extra expense. ;)

So close to the update I was looking for! Sticking with 2016 GPU tech is personally disappointing but a super exciting day regardless. Will be holding out for Vega but congrats for all those finally getting the upgrade they were patiently waiting for.

I had an XPS 9360 (1080p Matte) and a 2016 rMBP with P3 display side to side. At 20% brightness on the XPS, it was more clearer than the rMBP was at ~40%/50%. The Matte screen is lovely!

I wonder how much resale values of dual-core TB 13" and quad-core TB 15" MacBook Pros dropped today. ;)

Similar to any other Apple hardware when new one comes out. Not everyone needs more cores, btw. And no need to be all ;) about it.

So on the 13", I have two questions -
  1. How does the new Iris Plus 655 graphics compare to the previous version?
  2. It it worth the upgrade from the i5 to the i7?
I was going to get a 15" with the last generation due to running VM's and needing the quad core. My concern is for light FCP work would the Iris graphics do the job or would I be better of with the 15" still?

the GPU is so poor for the price I'm upset its same as 2017 one

The Radeon Pro 580 e-GPU option doesn't seem that enticing, I hear it is between a GTX 1060 and a GTX 1070 in performance, with it being closer to the GTX 1060, so that is shying me away from getting a 13" with the e-GPU enclosure...

Wasn't expecting 1080 TI performance, but was hoping it was at least around the 1070/1080 tier. The in-built ones I presume are very close to GTX 1050?

I wonder how many more years until we see a redesigned chassis (Perhaps 2020?)
The 2012-2015 Retina MacBook Pro model chassis lasted from June 2012 until October 2016, so 4 years and 4 months, 2020 or 2021 sounds about right. At this point, we're three model revisions into the current chassis and nothing is going to change on it until the next redesign.

Also, blacks look more gray on matte displays, the reason I prefer glossy, and I never, ever had problems with reflections.

Also, MBP is brighter than XPS, so your 20% brightness comment really makes no sense to me, but hey, your choice.
