I think you can forget the latter. More likely the non-TB model will disappear completely would be my guess.

Whether the TB will disappear in the next redesign is a more interesting question to speculate on, but it's impossible to guess. If it starts to appear on other models we'll know that they are doubling down on it. Otherwise the only reason to keep it would be because Apple never admit to making mistakes, but that might be enough.

Yeah, I certainly don't expect it, but one can dream.

Good point about the other models: will be interesting to see what they do with them. It does seem like some revision of the concept is more likely than ditching it - hard to imagine them going back to function keys. OTOH, Apple never admitting to a mistake doesn't necessarily preclude getting rid of it - if they do it'll just disappear in a future design revision and they'll just never mention it.

They never did an update just for the gpu on the mbp
The 2015 one was (well, that and the force touch trackpad) but I think they waited from March to May because they delayed production for the Broadwell H chips that eventually only showed up in November and were almost immediately replaced by Skylake. If they were going to go Vega, I think they would just have waited it out.

There'll be no discount on the MacBook Pro. Instead, you'll get a pair of Beats (Solo?) headphones free. Also, I believe you can get 20% off AppleCare.

Not quite true. The MacBook Pro I ordered would be $3,589.00 instead of $3899 if you're a student / teacher + you get the $300 headphones.

Yeah, of course. I messed that up (and I should know as I bought a MacBook with the discount at Christmas!). I updated my post. I believe the discount, at least here in Germany, is 10%.

Thanks for the heads up. I already have a pair of beats studio3 I got as a gift, but 20% off apple care sounds nice.

Can you combine the regular educational discount with the back to school freebies?

Interesting that they updated the MacBooks before the macOS update. Either way, I'll consider this :) I'd like to have 6-core and an improved keyboard :)

They really had no choice when the competition is shipping the new chips for months - sales must have been at a standstill

Oh and yes your'e right Apple Care for education is $303 on the MacBook Pro. That's nice when you consider what it costs to replace the keyboard or display :p

OH MY GOD, IT HAPPENED!!!!

Prices are still high, but man, I'm gonna get one right now! €2500 for 16 GB / 512 GB option seems quite okay to me (though I'd like 1 TB, but at these prices, I might just get an eGPU instead). I'm looking forward to trying this new keyboard too!

So these are the last glorious days of my 2009 Macbook Pro. :D

So, many of you where very wrong in your predictions. We DID get DDR4. We DID get 32GB ram, even though many of you claimed it wasn’t happening and was unnecessary.................We DID get Bluetooth update, we DID get faster ram
MHz on both models, faster gpu, and even small updates to the display and touchbar. And 4TB ssd option even ! all in all I’m happy with this update though I think the custom options and euro prices are insane.

OK, we're finally here,
A few notes- personal opinion:

POSITIVE:
  • RAM, processing, graphics, etc: finally, welcome improvements
  • TouchBar: upon reconsidering, seems to be becoming useful - curious to try it, specifically w/ AutoCAD & Pixelmator

NEUTRAL:
  • USB C charging: still can't accept it as an improvement over MagSafe, but not that important
  • Ports: Still uneasy with the 4 USB-C ports, I believe the move was premature, at least for the Pro lineup
  • Build quality: as the few last models had various issues, it's only wise to wait for the reports

NEGATIVE:
  • Price: still quite steep, but no surprise there
  • Keyboard: the most important concern - absolutely have to wait and see if actually fixed

The T2 chip is a nice addition as well. It taking over a handful of non-trivial system tasks will also boost the performance of the machine overall.

This is a good update, very tempting, but I'll wait for a few reviews to come out and for average users to have them in their hands for a while.

Yeah, a lot of people said they would NEVER sacrifice battery life for DDR4 RAM. Well I guess they decided the "sacrifice" was worth it.
Yes but they put larger batteries

Updates on touchbar? On what? Pixels or something else?

Note that I misspoke in that post and have since updated it. You'll get the headphones and, if it's anything like here in Germany, 10% off the MacBook Pro with the educational discount

The TouchBar will also get True Tone I believe.

Same weight, same size, but almost 20% larger batteries? Wow, that's actually amazing!
That much more battery without adding to the weight is particularly impressive - I’d guess primarily based on improved chemistry rather than just more material?

You're probably correct, but that's an even better way of doing it I guess. :)

But remember, they increased th battery capacity by about 20% meaning more or less it should have the same amount of runtime.

The 13" Model still uses LPDDR3 RAM though, so runtime should be effectively 20% longer.
