If the 2018 macbook pro gets "Pro Motion" 120hz refresh rate, I'd instantly sell my current 2017 and buy the new one.

One can only hope to have that problem...

If they managed to put it on iPads, they can probably do that on MBPs too. If they care about Macs as much as iPads. Oh wait...

Sarcasm aside, I use a 144 Hz monitor as my main driver and love it, so I'm suddenly hyped

When the current model does absolutely everything you need but you can't stop but wonder what you could get when you wait just one more year ... I'm still not sure how to decide this year, the waiting game became a little long by now. :/

I would bet good money of that never happening - they would improve every other aspect of the screen before refresh rate in my view.

i wonder if they put the "power on+auto login" with the next macbook pro or next macOS. i wonder if they can allowed that feature only by software or they need hardware too

Will wait for Soda Lake or Vanilla Lake.

What about Whisky Lake? Vodka Lake?

calling this thread 2018 doesn't make sense since there may be an Oct release. There is a specific rumor around Q4 -Specifically October release from a reputable source for a more power user oriented 32gb machine. The old name "waiting for Cannonlake/ Coffeelake is better

OR...just rename it "The waiting for what's next thread...." :)

The "Never satisfied" thread? :p

2018 MacBook Pro will be THE One.

- 10-bit HDR 120hz display, iPad Pro has it and the OLED IPhone 8 will have it and the Macs and Mac Pros has it. Guess who gets it next.
- DDR4 it's a must have moving 4K files and programs. 32GB please
- Coffee Lake CPU 4-Core 8 Threads 30% better than Kaby look it up.
- improved Touch Bar.
- New battery design
- Fix the Giant Touch Pad

No Mac has a 120 Hz screen, not even the upcoming (well, still a long way off) iMac Pro.

I am glad I purchased my MBP in 2015, by the time I am ready to upgrade (I'm going 15 inch next time), which is going to be around 2020 (if life spare), I am going to get a good bang for my buck. I hope at least makes 512 GBs standard by then. But, if I save diligently for the next 3 years, I should be able splurge.

I know everyone will say that this is impossible, but I think it may actually happen.

We might see a 17 inch computer at the end of this year. Mainly because Apple has already said that the way their computers are currently designed, there is no option for the 32 GB RAM. A 17 inch would allow for more space. It would also allow for a bigger battery and maybe better GPU (Vega).

And to all you people saying its not possible, Kuo mentioned a Q4 MacBook Pro that is supposed to wow us with how innovative it is. AND they stopped using the keywords Early, Late, and Mid to describe their products. This means that there can only be ONE 15" this year. Just one. As a result, Any new MacBook Pro has to be a different size or switch to a different name than Pro. And I don't think that MacBook Pro Pro is going to be their choice.

Anyway, I'd love to hear you guys rip this theory to shreds :)

EDIT: Also, they mentioned that they have done wrong to Pro users. This is one thing many pro users have been asking for. This may be how they make up to them on the notebook side. They already are doing it for Mac Pro and iMac. Their last "pro" device needing pro features is the MacBook Pro

How likely will Apple change the keyboard back to those pre-butterfly ones? I tired the new MacBook Pro 15" 2017 yesterday. I still prefer the old ones.

This. Anyone hoping for another 2017 release is dreaming. I think what we saw happen this year will continue happening for the coming years--Apple updates its Mac line once, annually. It would certainly justify the dropping of the 'early, mid, late' nomenclature they were using.

There are also a number of advantages to this methodology, mainly it'll just increase the innovation and increase sales. I don't think Apple or consumers win when Apple goes 500+ days without an update.

To your other point The Reasonable One, no way we see a 17" machine. Maybe, just maybe they release a new MacBook model (slightly thicker, more ports, more RAM, etc) which is a new model altogether, separate from the MBP. I personally think it seems very unlikely. But even if they did, 0% chance it's 17 inches.

Ming leaked exactly what they would do and we saw exactly that. He also predicted an October release. No reason to doubt given his prediction accuracy.

Feel free to demonstrate yours before telling people here what to think.

I certainly would love that to be true- however ming said it'd be 15 inches. it may be a new Pro+ who the hell knows

if it was 17 inches - which I'd personally love- we'd have leaks by now.

I've waited for 9 years and just got a new 4K display that my old 2008 AluminumBook cannot even drive - it is time.

It's quite a testament that you have a computer that has served you for 9 years and is even still viable. It also shows how different the times are. It's not the 2000's anymore when every 2 years, the only computer that wasn't becoming obsolete was a top of the line unit.

I hung onto a 2012 Unibody till buying a 2016 15" tbMBP this year. I could have continued with the 2012, but the 5K monitor support alone was worth the upgrade. If you can afford it and NEED it, don't put off the upgrade in hopes of "winning" the transaction by getting a better value.

it's kind of sad actually - I just picked up one of the kaby lake high end 15s. power wise- it's the same as the late 2014 model. I can't tell the difference. it's depressing.

I understand your pain. Even coming from a unibody 2012, I couldn't tell you if it was more than just a bump faster unless you handed me a stopwatch. I pretty much knew to expect this though and also one of the reasons why my unibody 2012 was so fast was because of the Samsung 850 EVO SSD in it.

Fast SSDs have really changed the game with aging computers. Processors have been fast enough to handle most run of the mill tasks within an acceptable time window for many years now. It took SSDs to fully make that apparent. Once your startup time is already down to 15 seconds, are you really going to notice if it gets cut down to 13 seconds? I'll take it, but is it really worth spending thousands of dollars? That's why it was the 5K monitor that drove my decision. A second here and there really won't add up to much extra productivity for me, but a 5K monitor to reduce eye strain? That has had big big results. I can pound code for ten hours without my eyes screaming at me to call it a day. The last time I could stare at a screen this long without any problem, I was 10 years younger.

I do actually do some intensive tasks where the additional horsepower of my 2016 gets used, but for most things it feels faster, but I would hesitate for a moment if you asked me to put money on it.

Don't you find mbp retina screens enough restful for your eyes?
Or it is just about the screen size, regardless any other feature?

Yeah that is pretty slick. I don't know if they would use ATI free-sync tech, but they are using ATI chips.

But I was suprised they updated the 12" iPad Pro to the higher Hz too, without really mentioning that. I have the 12" (iPad) and am pumped! I put the 12" side by side with my MacBook Pro 2015/15" and man at Starbucks you can really tell the difference with the P3 display vs non-P3 display.

I would be happy with just my current 12" Pro next to a 2017 P3 MacBook Pro. I mean if I got the 120Hz, I would definitely want them on both tho... unlike my current sitch...

But I don't know if/and when I could go new 12" and new 15"...this new screen tech is nice tho!

Well, I'm rocking comfortable with my MBP 2016 of course and are not done written it off before 2018, so I think I will go for the upcoming Waiting for the MBP 2019 edition thread. :p:rolleyes:

I got used to a 30" Apple Cinema Display. It's hard to go back to a laptop screen after getting used to big screens. I find the extra space to be helpful for my work so while everyone else was waiting for a specific processor or 32GB RAM or 200 hour battery life, I was watching the release rumors religiously for support for 4K and 5K monitors and the first one that came out that fully supported a worthy replacement to my 30" ACD, I got.

Definitely, My 2012 rMBP is still doing well, after my up and coming trip, I'll be scheduling some time with Apple to replace its battery. That way I can squeeze a little more life out of the old girl. In your case I would expect it to last beyond 2019 :)

I don't think that your theory is a bad one, especially with Ming Chi Kuo saying that a MacBook is coming in the fall that has been significantly redesigned. Now, here is something interesting that I saw a few months ago:

https://hypebeast.com/2017/3/apple-powerbook-return-trademark

I think their speculation is incorrect. I am sure that it is probably Apple simply making sure that product names they used in past don't fall out of trademark and into competitors hands (like they still do with "Think different), but it is fun to think about nonetheless. Imagine if they revived the PowerBook lineup and turned it into a no compromise notebook for those who want performance, utility, and the ability to upgrade RAM? Of course, like I said, this is more of a dream than anything. :)

which tasks have you run where you haven't seen any difference? what is your testing method/procedure?

Yep, I am very happy with it, got it Black Friday of 2008 - my one improvement was adding 4GB of RAM to bring it up to 8GB, otherwise it is holding on.

I don't even feel like I NEED the upgrade, but I have waited this long and have no qualms about buying one just because I feel like it is time - treat yo self, ya know?

I don't NEED to replace my 2012 8gb rMBP but I've been a good girl and I reckon I also deserve a treat. I've hinted to the husband but he didn't bite so I bought my own, a maxed out 15" mbp which is arriving on Friday :D
