Just seems another day another indictment of this design at the moment... You'd like to think they've learned from this misadventure and made robustness their priority going forward. I suppose we will see with whatever they roll out later this year.

Exactly. I am waiting very hopefully that this next redesign they actually realize that reliability is a feature as well ... the most important feature IMO.

Absolutely, and a feature you've mostly been able to rely on a Mac to deliver previously, too.

The last line of that article is what worries me most: "Apple is still advertising the MacBook butterfly keyboard as a feature."

I'm really worried that Apple will try to come up with another stupid 'innovation' for the keyboard rather than go back to design that worked for, like, a half century. That, to them I think, would be admitting 'failure'.

Then we'll have to wait a year (or more) before buying the laptop with year another redesigned keyboard to make sure that the thing they come out with next actually is reliable again.

Well, my 2016 Macbook had the SSD just die a few months back. Since Apple, thank the heavens, now solders everything together, there is no fix other than replacement. Running it off an external SSD is just plain painful. Gone are the days I could do some work, close the lid and run. Nonetheless, that thing was great for travel but quickly got long in the tooth even with maxed out processor once the travel stopped.

Would love to see a 14" MBP with some legit graphics chops. I don't need anything crazy, just enough not to bog down with the most recent Civ and things like that. But it would be nice to be able to have some fun with the computer during downtime. The extra 2 inches of screen real estate would be a welcome addition since I usually have email, a couple of word docs and multiple pdf files all open at once. Never could figure out how to practically make it feasible on the 12". USB-C is fine. Just give me something reliable, with 16GBs of ram standard and a minimum 512 SSD, a dedicated GPU would make it a winner. Basically, I'm in the market for a mid-level 15" now and am hoping to not need such a big form factor, albeit I'd love the screen space.

I am using a 2012 MBP Classic wich I put a SSD in - just upgraded to 16 Gigs of Ram yesterday.

I am waiting on the 2019s, maybe even 2020s just to see if the 2019s are hiding any new issues before pulling the wallet out.

Just really want/need a quad core and I just cannot take this god awful screen resolution any longer. Going from a 5K iMac to a classic MBP screen is like stepping into the stone age.

If the brought back the old keyboard wouldn't that make the machine slightly thicker? And if it's slightly thicker maybe they could then put a better GPU in it?

Everybody wins! Although I really like the thinness of the 13", I wouldn't mind if it gains some height tbh.

I think just a few options or changes would be a splendid upgrade that I would jump on now.

1. Bring back MagSafe. (wtf)
2. Fix the display coating issues they've had for years. I've received 2 display replacements for free out of warranty.
3. Optional TouchBar.
4. More powerful GPu.

In the same boat, waiting for 2019 to check at least some of the main boxes, and 2020 to make sure it doesn't have any major new issues.

I am using a 15 inch 2013 rMBP - but its one of the problematic ones where the dGPU dies because of the faulty power supply chip. I've already taken it apart and fixed the issue twice (my soldering skills are probably not the best). Just hoping it lasts until at least the end of the year.

I am in the same exact boat. I have a non-retina 2012 MPB 13" I recently upgraded to SSD and 16gb. It's like night and day.

I have a Late 2014 27" 5k at the office.

I don't do graphics intensive stuff, but the difference is noticeable. I won't be buying a new MBP until they come out with a new model that has proven reliable beyond the first year on the market.

Sorry for the dumb question, but how did you upgrade the RAM @DookSucks and @magicschoolbus ? I have a 2013 rMBP I'd kill to upgrade RAM on while waiting to emerge from the current dark ages of the MBP. Was it not soldered in in 2012? Thanks!

I'm expecting Apple to do nothing until they absolutely have to as this has been their MD for many a year...

Q-6

I was under the assumption that Apple completely overhauls their MBP design once every 4 years. So with that, 2020 would be more appropriate? However, I'm guessing they're going to push this a bit earlier because of the structural issues they have with the current gen.

Would they likely announce this at WWDC this June or later on in the year?

Time will tell, equally Apple's interest in the Mac has been waning for may a year. Current MBP is one of the worst Apple has ever designed and that concerns deeply as one generally expects advancement & improvement...

I second that view. I fear Apple ignores the keyboard issues for the time being and introduces a Butterfly 4 variant in 2020.
That said, as long as they keep their insane pricing policy I'm not interested anyway. Plus no Nvidia... bummer

Pricing is just a joke and to me signals the end of the Mac. Apple is now milking the Mac for all it's worth while the going is good simple as that. As my late father would say "fools and their money"...

That’s a bit of an exaggeration, the end of the Mac is far from in sight. Apple have made missteps, that keyboard needs a fix and soon! Apple must of a clear vision for the Mac if they are putting in work with Marzipan and bringing the Apple services like Apple Arcade to the Mac later this year.

Whether you agree with where Apple is taking the Mac is a different subject. Personally even with Apples latest issues, I feel that MacOS is far better than Windows. The reason people like the Mac is not just hardware but MacOS also.

When they fix the keyboard issues I will be moving back to a MacBook, regardless of price. Mainly because I think it’s worth every penny.

Time will tell, and Apple needs to do a lot more than just fix the keyboard, which they are clearly not overly concerned about...

Very simple with me; it needs to work and present as few problems as possible, Apple is currently failing massively. My notebooks are intrinsic to revenue, although W10 is a mess it has yet to fail me. Apple wants my custom it needs to get it's act together simple as that...
