Time will tell, and Apple needs to do a lot more than just fix the keyboard, which they are clearly not overly concerned about...

Very simple with me; it needs to work and present as few problems as possible, Apple is currently failing massively. My notebooks are intrinsic to revenue, although W10 is a mess it has yet to fail me. Apple wants my custom it needs to get it's act together simple as that...

Q-6

The thing is I don’t think they can just fix the keyboard with an easy fix. The keyboard issue probably needs a redesign, that’s my guess as to why we are hearing from Ming Chi Kuo that Apple will be redesigning the MacBook Pro this year instead of waiting for the full 4 year design cycle.

Apart from the keyboard issue, there are still some great Mac’s available, the MacBook Air for example. I was all in for buying a new Air until I saw the keyboard issue. Time will tell but I hope Apple fix it and soon.

If it's not air portable it's of no use to me, and Apple has a lot more to do than just fix a keyboard it's been ignoring for three years...

New Air another joke woefully underpowered, port constrained and over priced. The reasons the Air was such a success have been forgotten in the name of greed. Thing is people don't want notebooks thinner for the sake if it, they want notebooks that deliver, that's something Apple has become detached from...

I've actually switched to PC laptops for my personal use, while keeping a small collection of old Macbooks, consisting of a Powerbook G3 Lombard, G4 Titanium and 2013 Macbook Air, as a long time Apple lover.

PC laptops nowadays do the job just fine, they're not as bad as they have used to be. Not as good as 2012-2015 MBP's but better than 2016-2019 ones, at least for my criteria, also at a fraction of the price.
I've settled down, so to speak.

But lately I've been brought a 2011 MBP 15" with failed GPU to fix for a friend, and after fixing and upgrading the old failing HDD to an SSD, I've fiddled for a few hours with it.
That experience has left me enraged and bittered. It was such a beautiful piece of technology. The glowing Apple logo, the superb keyboard and trackpad combination, the brilliance of MagSafe technology, the tank-like build quality and interior modularity. What would I do to buy it with 2019 internals.

I've been as close to crying as a computer can make me. So much genius, never caught by the competition and then killed by Apple itself. I really hope I can go back to Apple someday with a computer made with those standards.

The new Air is not under powered, some people look at the processor and automatically think that it is. The Air isn’t suppose to be a power house, that’s what the Pro is for. The Air is powerful enough for what most people will use it for.

Price wise it is higher than most people had thought, a £999 entry price would of been nice. It will probably get cheaper over time just like the original Air did (which had a very high starting price)

Some could argue that it is underpowered given its price and form factor. There are laptops out their which are smaller with 15w CPU’s, so you’d think there is nothing stopping Apple doing the same on these other than on a cost saving basis or to prevent the cannibalism of the Pro models.

I understand that, i just think that it's relative to the task at hand. If someone is going to be editing hours of video footage in 4K, they are not going to be doing it on a Macbook Air. If however they are writing, web browsing and doing everyday/simple tasks, having more power would be wasted anyway.

I think people often get caught up in the whole spec list, when in reality most people don't need the high power. It just sounds nice on paper i guess. It's like the 8GB VS 16GB Ram debate, some will say get 16GB while others will say no 8GB Ram is enough for simple tasks.

I completely agree with people on the keyboard issue, Apple have messed up and they need to fix it. I'm annoyed because i want to buy a Macbook Air but hearing about these keyboard issues has put me off until Apple fix it. Personally i like the new Air, i think it's a balanced machine for most general consumers who don't need the power of the Pro.

If you feel the Air is underpowered, then your workflow requires a MacBook Pro.

If you're saying the Air is too expensive for its internals, perhaps that is accurate, although that is a different argument I think.

I've had every Pro in this generation and strangely, it was the 2018 keyboard that crapped out on me.

I am fine with this amount of key travel, but I cannot buy another MBP without a redesigned keyboard.

The half week without the machine while it was getting fixed was something I don't want to got through again.

That's the reason why i'm holding off on getting an Air or the Pro, the keyboard issues. I don't mind the travel and i like the design of the current MacBook Pro and Air, it is just the keyboard failing that i don't want. Otherwise i would buy now.

It's a beautiful machine with a fantastic screen, but with that keyboard---it's like dating a real pretty girl who is a kleptomaniac or a compulsive liar or some other permanent trait that makes her undateable.

I do think we'll see a re-design at WWDC. They can't let this go another year, right?

There are rumours and a report from Ming Chi Kuo (the reliable analyst) that has said Apple will release a new redesigned Macbook Pro with a 16" to 16.5" screen this year. Ming Chi Kuo also mentions a 31" 6K monitor, probably for the Mac Pro.

Could it be that Apple announce the Mac Pro, new pro display and the redesigned Macbook Pro at WWDC? i'm not sure, i can see them announcing the Mac Pro at WWDC. A redesigned Macbook Pro may get an October event? alongside other things.

I think we'll see a big "pro" focus at WWDC and we'll get new laptops and the new MacPro.

I'm speculating of course, but I don't think Apple really likes two fall events. If they announce the new Pro machines this summer (and I am also betting on an ARM MacBook), they can press release a new Air and/or Mac Mini and iPad Pro and use the September event for iPhones and watches.

‍♂️

What I haven't seen a lot of fans speculate is what they will do with the TouchBar (and rightly so---I think the keyboard is a much more important issue). I think it's fun for emoji viewing and not much else.

That's a good point, they could focus on the "pro" area with the Mac Pro and the new designed Macbook Pro. I think that would be a great way of showing that they care about the pro market still. Also the iPad Pro got an update last year, so did the Macbook Air and Mac Mini, those devices could get spec updates that are released later. That would give Apple the time to focus on the "pro" market.

The Macbook Pro redesign is interesting, this reported 16" screen could be due to a shrink in bezels.

I keep wanting to say this sounds right, but I don't know if it's just because I want it to be right.

Ming Chi Kuo tend to be right with what he says. He was right with last years predictions of ECG Apple Watch, 3 versions of the iPhone and so on. He has also been right so far this year, he predicted the ECG feature would come to more countries (it has), he also predicted Airpods 2 would get wireless charging and improvements to Bluetooth (they have) and he predicted the iPad would get more screen (it did from 9.7" to 10.5").

At this stage i wouldn't bet against him. I just wonder when the new Macbook Pro will come, WWDC would be awesome to reveal a new design, especially along side the Mac Pro and a new pro display.

Air would be a far better proposition with a 15W U series CPU, I used a Retina MacBook for over 3 years and it too was underpowered barring basic tasks. All Apple has done is create another purchasing problem, especially for those that want the Air with the base 13"MBP being a far better proposition for very little extra Cost.

The previous Air had a broad appeal to a wide audience as it offered a balance of performance and pricing. The new Air not so much, with the performance lacking and the pricing high the new Air is unlikely to have such broad appeal.

He says is all really and why the Air is a poor performer that Apple could have easily avoided.

The purchasing decisions are too complicated. I think they should ditch the MacBook—-it’s a very niche machine.

I think Apple got themselves into a corner, the 12” MacBook was suppose to replace the Air but two things ended up happening. Production costs on the MacBook remained high and so it wasn’t reduced in price, secondly people kept buying the MacBook Air. Apple went back to the drawing board and made the new MacBook Air.

I agree that the MacBook should be removed from the line-up, it should go like this:

MacBook Air - general consumers and students buy this machine

MacBook Pro - for professionals who need more power

The price of the new MacBook Air will come down in time.

Mac should be; entry level, mainstream & professional/prosumer and the products differentiated, everything is too alike these days, with many diluted. New Air is really just the larger MacBook many wanted, the MBP ever more mainstream, leaving many with a void and nothing to fill it other than Windows hardware. Pricing needs to be reviewed as it's getting stupid now, the value is simply bleeding away...

13", 32GB, no touchbar. Please?

We can only hope.

The two biggest fails (not the only ones) of the 2016-2018 MacBook pros are the keyboard and the Touchbar.

Unfortunately, one thing Apple almost never seems to do is backtrack. So I expect another attempt at a thin keyboard, but not going back to the scissor design that has been reliable for decades.
And the Touchbar, I see them doing a supposedly 'new and improved' one rather than getting rid of it altogether.

The reason they don’t backtrack is probably because it’s all part of their over all plan and road map. Don’t forget these machines were probably designed years ago, new designs and products are in the process years before they are ever released or announced to the public.

If they can fix the issue with the keyboard, I have no problem with it being thin.

The keyboard is a total mess but I’m willing to bet that this influences anyone’s buying decisions. The only factor that counts is money and their computers simply cost too much (as do their phones)
