Question, if you did Remove Backup from the iTunes prefs, is that backup gone forever or can it still be located?

this worked great, thank you.

what I did:

started with 4.0 and synced/backed up pre-jb

jailbroke the phone, restarted

restored from backup

restarted for good measure and facetime/mms still works

OK so I thought I had backups but they got screwed up.

if i just restore to 4.0.1 and jailbreak and then start syncing apps/contacts (not from a backup but just syncing those things) think I will be good to go?

you need a backup from a NON jailbroken phone to restore facetime and MMS. so restore to 4.0.1. then backup. then jailbreak. then restore backup.

LEt me explin where i am...

I just restored the 4.0.1 Set up as new or for m BACKUP
After this should I jailbreak?
And then restore again?

Since my most current backup was postJB, I guess I'll lose my data since you need a nonJB backup, right?

You can restore to one of your older backups, but some of your data might be gone such as pictures. This is what happened to me, my previous backup was from the end of June and so I lost all of the photos since then.

After i jailbreak and doesnt the restore from backup leave you with a unjailbroken iphone?

after following the instructions after my first failed jailbreak of my iphone 4 I am posting that the facetime and MMS works just fine after my second try.

I did as was instructed:
  • restore to fresh 4.01
  • jailbreak
  • backup from restore
  • rebooted iphone 4

Let me rephrase..

JB now.

Then on the itunes screen that asks for "set up as new or restore from backup" choose the 2nd option..

It isn't the same as restoring your phone.

I upgraded to 4.0.1 and backed up right before I jb'd.
Lost MMS/FT and just restored from back up. Got it working again.

Even rebooted and it's still functioning.

i was able to get mms and facetime working just like you mentioned in the 1st post. thanks a lot!

1: Restore
2: Backup
3: Jailbreak
4: restore from last (just Backed up) Back up. If that makes any sense
Aside from loosing texts etc. This should work correct?

oohhhhhh, Apple logo. Waiting, Waiting, Waiti...........Damn it?
I guess DFU & try again.
Should I reboot after Jailbreak, Before restoring from my back up?

you guys are making this way too difficult.

1) backup before you JB
2) JB
3) cancel the sync when your phone resprings
4) restore from that backup you just made
5) enjoy!

You don't need to restore the phone before you jailbreak, just don't let it sync after you JB.

easy to say that now. we know all that now. when I made this thread it was all trial and error. some people will have to restore if they dont have a PRE JB BACKUP.

great! btw I updated the first post again to try and make it more clear now that we know alot more.

This is what I did and it works even AFTER rebooting (several times):
*I am using an iPhone 4 on FW 4.0
*Made a backup BEFORE I JB
*Using iTunes 9.2

1. Plugged in iPhone to computer
2. Right when it started to SYNC I CANCELED it both on the phone and iTunes
3. Right-clicked on my phone and picked "Restore from backup"
4. Hit OK & selected which iphone I wanted to restore
5. Let it restore (approx. 2-4 minutes)
6. Rebooted phone
7. Checked FT; worked!
8. Sent an MMS; worked!
9. Rebooted phone again
10. Repeated steps 7 & 8; both worked.

**Good thing I had synced and backed up my phone prior to JBing. Thats was the key factor in resolving this.

I currently don't have Internet in my home. And it's driving me mad. Which means I can't connect to the iTunes restore server. Could I back up my phone, jb it. Then use it with mms missing for the next day then plug it into iTunes when I get Internet and cancel the sync and restore from my backup so I can get the mms fix?

Re:iPhone 4 jailbreak...

If it is now legal to jailbreak your phones, shouldn't it be illegal for Apple to keep putting out "updates" designed to break our phones, i.e. force us to update to the latest firmware and kill our jailbreaks? I'm getting tired of this cat and mouse game! This is the main reason I haven't bought an iPhone 4 yet.
