The port on the phone will eventually wear out if you use the cable all the time.
My 5 year old XR is almost impossible to get connected with a cable nowadays.

Hopefully the USB-C port on the new phones will be more sturdy than lightning.
From personal experience I would not count on it! 🤣

Man, this thread is a trip of people mixing together 10 different things.

1. I've noticed at least in this thread that everyone who confirmed it has happened to them is using a BMW with iDrive 8. I know in my '23 X3 with iDrive 7 I've had my 15 Pro on the wireless charger for many hours as I've driven around with no issue so far. Of course it could bite me at any time but for now, it's been ok.

2. Wireless charging pads in most cars will make your phone very hot. We don't even know if the heat is the root cause of the NFC/Wallet failure. Judging by someone's post earlier where it bricked the NFC within a few minutes of putting on the charger, I'd say that is an unrelated issue.

3. It's too early to place blame on Apple or BMW with the current data. On one hand, this problem didn't appear until the 15 despite people using iPhones on BMW wireless chargers for years now. On the other hand, it only seems to be happening on BMW wireless chargers. Each point can be used to argue that one or the other is at fault.

I hope BMW has to do a recall. It's what they get for charging subscriptions for heated seats and other BS. I'm glad I drive an Audi where everything just functions as it should.
Thankfully, after much backlash, they saw the light and dropped the subscription plans for heated seats.
I don't think there is anything either manufacturer can do about heat. I think it's just because of the location and confined space. Maybe it's something else but heat, probably just tell you to disable the charging portion if you wanna use digital key.

Soon cars will have subscriptions to start them and if you don't pay the subscription it'll just be parked up for 30 days until the company tows it away.

...Here's where someone replies to tell me this already exists.
My neighbor's newly leased vehicle stopped working after the first two payments weren't credited properly. It took two days for the dealer and leasing company to get it resolved. Not naming brand because it might be something the dealer installed.

If true, we can be assured it has nothing at all to do with "forced obsolescence"
It's not forced obsolescence. It's basically adjusting your strategy to the challanging economic tides.

You either increase your price or keep the same and value engineer. I prefer lowering the quality cells to lowering quality of screens, memory chips, cameras etc.

2-Series cabrio with armrest-based charger: cooks iPhone X, will not fit an iPhone 11 Plus (otherwise....it would cook it)
X3 with wireless charger in console. Great location! Cooks iPhone X
Mini Cooper S cabrio with armrest-based charger: Not using it but guaranteed to cook the iPhone.

This is nothing new people....

My iPhone 14 Pro will get uncomfortably hot when wireless charging in my Tesla Model 3 and would also often give a message saying that charging has stopped due to heat. I am foregoing wireless charging at all with my iPhone 15 Pro Max, I just don’t trust it. I also had my battery run down to 89% health after a year on my iPhone 14 Pro, and I think it’s primarily due to it overheating while wireless charging.
I 've had a 14 pro max for about 1 year and have charged wirelessly every night. My battery health is 99%. My charger is a Anker. (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08LPPD3NL/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

I have the iPhone 15 PM and a 2023 BMW i7 with wireless chargers in both the front and back. So far, in the front, I haven't had any issues other than a message on the control screen from time to time indicating the wireless charging was now "low voltage" with a request to read the Owner's Manual. The manual references having a thick case, which I have on my iPhone due to the camera bump.

Not sure if it is safe to keep using the charger, but as a CarPlay user, I think USB-C would be a better choice anyway for audio quality. Then again, there are other reports of USB-C cables not working with the iPhone 15 and CarPlay...

Are you guys that use wireless charging able to charge while using navigation through CarPlay? I ask because my Honda's crappy USB port could barely keep my 12 mini charged while the phone was navigating, and I'd imagine that wireless wouldn't be much better.

I'm shopping for a new car, and although I like the idea of a 'clean' wireless look, this thread is making me think that wired will save a lot of headaches in the long run.

Genius is leaving a cable in your car. :D
I'd ditch the wires 100%, IF I had that option in my car (which I don't). If I bought a new car that had it built in, you bet I'd be using it. Cables are messy and you don't spend a fortune for a sleek dash console only to have the looks messed up by wires.

Charging mat's on the other hand I don't get, same amount of wire just without a plug - pass.

My CX50's charging pad is pretty useless and only charges my XR for like 5 minutes so I have a cable is plugged in to the center console and my phone sits on the seat beside me. It does have wireless CarPlay so I don't have to have it plugged in, but there are no visible cables messing up my sleek dash when I do.

I haven’t had this issue but the BMW wireless charger is garbage. It heats the phone so much that the phone stops charging. Not surprised to hear that it can actually do damage.
i do agree, is the case in all our 3 BMW's

Unlikely. USB C is not a very robust connection.

I can yes. Either in the charging pad or in my pocket. Remember wireless CarPlay is really useful for those short journeys when you don’t bother getting the phone out of your pocket.

I also don't like wirelessly charging in a Tesla. It seems to go super slow. I rather use the USB-C ports and use a wired charger if I have to charge. Good thing about a Tesla is that I don't have to use CarPlay or Maps so my battery isn't draining more than usual anyways.
