When during the setup process does it ask you to update iOS? I don't ever remember seeing that.

First time I saw it was on my new M1 iPad Pro 12.9" as it was on an older iPadOS version so it prompted me to update to the latest iPadOS version before it would initiate the data transfer from my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9".

Apple makes the decision when to end beta, when to manufacture phones, when to ship phones, when to release a new OS etc. Totally within Apple's control, every single decision.
I see that @slippery-pete has given a thumbs down disagree to my statements. Totally within his rights of course. But it would be helpful if he could state in words what he finds untrue in my post. I could learn from his wisdom perhaps, as could others.

This article is actually confusing the issue by burying the lede. During initial setup, users will be prompted to update to iOS 17.0.2 (see the image in the tweet embedded in the article). The important thing is simply to NOT skip that update if you're planning to transfer settings/apps from another phone later in the process.

TLDR -- During setup, make sure you press "Update Now" instead of "Update Later."
I guess I don’t see what the issue is…other than people not reading the article and offering knee jerk reactions.

True, but eventually they have to commit to ship. And it's been historically in September for that Ship Date so they have to settle on a build before then to put on the phones before they are boxed up and sent to the planes.

That we are seeing these Day One(ish) updates shows at least once they do commit to ship, they still work on testing and discovering new issues and remediating them before the phones actually arrive in our hands.

You know, there is a concept called severity. No one would care about a bug that glitches dynamic island but will care if iOS corrupts itself and bricked.
Note the all-important word, “might”. Apparently, this bug never happened to any of Apple’s testers. Not that I’m defending Apple, but this bug does not have a 100% chance of happening, and Apple unfortunately missed it.

Given how everyone is acting like the world is ending (hint: it’s not as the iPhone prompts you to upgrade), the comment about “armchair developers” is spot on.

Yike! Releasing the update without testing was a bad move. It reminds me of Snow Leopard macOS, where I got stuck in an infinite boot loop, the worst bug I've ever encountered.

You have done nothing but complain and moan about this. When in reality, its a non issue as phone will prompt you to upgrade before transferring the data from one phone to another.

I get it, complaining/moaning is "wisdom sharing". Got it. And BTW, I apologize for the thumbs down; I didn't realize you were so sensitive about what a random message board person thinks of an opinion you shared.

Moving along, have a good one Expos.

This needs to be higher and the wording on the article is crap!

I read this article about one hour too late! It didn't matter. The phone simply did the update to 17.0.2 then transferred my data. My 15 Pro Max is working just fine.

And who is responsible for setting that time line?
As others have stated, you have to commit to a ship date; the simple fact that the patch is out before anyone got their phones shows they found the bug after they shipped but still had time to fix it. This is basically a nothing burger with the typical freakout you come to expect from people today.

This feature, phone to phone transfer, has been around for maybe 5 years? The first two it was a disaster, the next two it was flawless, sad to see it back in disaster territory...

No one forces Apple to coincide iOS releases with new hardware.

I have previously used a cable from old iPhone to new iPhone for data transfer, is that no longer possible? And would this bug effect that?

I normally backup my old phone to a computer then restore to the new phone during setup (in my mind, I thought that would be the fastest and more reliable way). Isn’t that still possible? I take it that the bug wouldn’t effect that mode?

So as i suspected, you cannot provide one shred of evidence to prove my comments incorrect. Therefore, it is very puzzling how you can disagree with two statements which are factually correct. Perhaps it was a frustration driven thumbs down. No problem. Have a good weekend.

And this one is low severity. It only affects people that are doing phone-to-phone transfers and the fix is already out.

Many ISPs severely limit upload speeds so backing up your original phone to the cloud is slowww. Also 5GB is not enough if your phone has any meaningful data.
I have a fully updated iphone 14Pro. I pre-ordered a iphone 15 pro max via the iphone upgrade program. Few days ago i got a message on my 14 Pro that says back up this phone to icould to be ready to move to your new phone. We will temporarily increase your icloud storage to make this backup for your new phone. Today my phone now says ready for your new phone. Your data is ready to be moved to your new iphone. This icloud backup will be deleted in 19 days. Not sure if this shows up for everybody or not but looks like apple will temporarily upgrade your icloud for this purpose.

So you have no idea how much of a freakout people would have if Apple pushed the ship date of their new phone to address a minor bug that is already fixed.
