Band Standardization

When I decided to splurge on the Link bracelet, I weighed both the cost and the service lifetime of the bracelet. The link bracelet on my mechanical watch is now over 35 years old (Stainless Steel and Gold), so the return on that bracelet has been good. For the Apple Watch, the SS Link bracelet costs more than a Sport Model watch. What will happen when "Watch 2" is released?

I made a bet that Apple would retain compatibility with their bands, and least until a Major Watch upgrade. I bet that the Link band would work with more than one Watch release. Only time will tell on that bet. What are your thoughts? :)

This is exactly why I spent the money on the link as well. I figure it's sort of an investment I'll only have to make once.

I'm hoping for the same thing, but I made my decision based on the whole package. I decided to treat it as buying a luxury watch for $1000. Hopefully that justification will satisfy me if next years model has a different band connection. Also, even if I decide to buy next years model, that doesn't mean I can't continue to wear this years. I can just switch them out, day to day. (We'll see if that works out too.)

Same here. I was debating between a cheaper band option but so long as it remains compatible for at least 1 more model I'll be happy with the investment. Worst case, some third party will try and make an adapter.

Yes, I plan to retain the link bracelet and buy the v2 as base model with the Sport band. I can sell the v1 with the new Sport band that came with the v2. I'll recoup more of my initial cost that way, as the base model always have the better resale value. I anticipate they won't change the connectors until they make the case thinner than the connectors (just like the Lightning port on iPhone and USB-C on the MacBook). It won't, however, be 35 years so not exactly a long term investment but it should be good for at least a few refreshes.

Could not agree more about the band choice, it was a value proposition for me and the whole package provided what I thought would be the most long (2-3 years?) term value based on the models available.

Also, in regards to the crowd here... This is a very civil thread by comparison to the other threads. I think a contributing factor to that may be that outside of the Edition models, we did order the most expensive ones. :)

$450 for a metal link bracelet...Lmfao!

You are obviously ignorant to high end luxury link bracelets. I pay $75 per link for my Tag. $450 for a link bracelet is a bargain when it comes to luxury watches.

I would like a link band but I think there will be third party bands that have the same look but a lot cheaper. Apples band is different because of the latch. They have a patent on that.

It's very similar to my Raymomd Weil link bracelet latch. But the Raymond Weil's latch isn't as small and clean.

Many link bracelets use the butterfly latch so I seriously doubt they have a patent on that. Maybe the removable links and the connectors.

Another good thing about the Apple link bracelet is that you can easily remove links without needing Apple or someone else to do that for you.

As others have said, a good stainless steel band on a quality watch isn't cheap. You can almost compare it speakers. You wouldn't buy a $2000 sound system and $100 speakers.

Do we know if any individual link bracelets have shipped? The ones without the watch, just the bracelet.

Here is the article. http://9to5mac.com/2015/04/21/apple-watch-patents/

I'm not a watch person so I have no idea what sets this apart from similar models.

A patent covering the "ornamental design" of their watches? Sounds like a patent against knockoffs rather than something specific like the latch.

Either way, many of the designs were lifted from Marc Newson who Apple hired on a part time basis.

They have not to my knowledge. If they had, I have a feeling this thread would be a little more, should we say, active in conversation on where the bundled watch and band ones are.

I agree with that. I definitely want my band but I'm in a position where I can wait till the fulfill some of the really early bundled orders

The latch is nice. It's very finely engineered. I just don't think it's robust enough for real-life use . It seemed somewhat fragile when I tried it on.

It seems to be one of those products that designers and engineers do primarily to impress other designers and engineers. :)

I think that these Forums are kind of replicating the experience of being in line for a launch. It's a way for all of us to reinforce and share our excitement about the product. It's been interesting to note that the SS Link purchasers seem to have just as much excitement, but less anger, that some of the other configurations.

We're all in this "Watchboat" together.

I think we are actually in the later stages of the grief/loss model... i.e. depression and acceptance.

I know I was pretty frustrated and angry on the 24th but now I'm just accepting the fates as they be.

Ha. I think you're right. I was hoping and hoping to get the watch sooner than May 13th, but I think I've come to accept that I may not see it until May 27th. Once it gets here we'll all forget how hard it was to wait.

Sorry, new to the thread. But I'm just wondering why you guys don't just order a SS with sports band and order the link bracelet separate? The price of SS SB + Additional link is the same as SS Link + Additional SB. You are essentially getting the watch 3-4 weeks earlier to use and then just switch in the link when it comes.

Looks like one of the planes had quite a few classic buckles on it from the posts on the forum. Just us Links and Leathers Loopers left.

Who knows when the link bands will come in at this point.
