watchOS 5.1.2 Will Enable ECG App on Apple Watch Series 4

Hopefully it will be released at some point in the Uk. Has we are still waiting for Apple pay cash. Apple is supposed to be a global company so shouldn’t release features which are US Specific.

[doublepost=1543429347][/doublepost]I also have a series 3 since I upgraded from series 1. That’s WHY we upgrade, to get the latest features when they become available. Quit your whining and get out your checkbook.

Uh? I am not whining about anything, quite the opposite.

ECG functionality will be enabled on the Apple Watch Series 4 in the publicly released version of watchOS 5.1.2, which is currently in beta testing, according to an internal Apple Store training document obtained by MacRumors.

watchOS 5.1.2 will feature an Apple-designed ECG app that can indicate whether your heart rhythm shows signs of atrial fibrillation, a serious form of irregular heart rhythm, or a normal sinus rhythm. Apple Watch Series 4 is capable of generating an ECG similar to a single-lead electrocardiogram, according to the FDA.

ECG and other heart data is collected in the Health app on a paired iPhone. Apple's document lists a minimum requirement of an iPhone 5s or later running iOS 12.1.1, currently in beta testing, or later.

To take an ECG reading from the Apple Watch, users will need to place a finger on the Digital Crown while wearing the watch. The reading is completed in 30 seconds, allowing users to determine whether their hearts are beating in a regular pattern or if there are signs of atrial fibrillation.

Apple's training document states that the ECG app is regulated and only available in regions cleared for use. The app will initially be limited to the United States, where Apple has received FDA clearance, but Apple Watch Series 4 models sold worldwide include the electrical heart sensor for future expansion.

Apple Store employees are instructed to advise customers that the ECG app is "not intended to be a diagnostic device or to replace traditional methods of diagnosis," and "should not be used to monitor or track disease state or change medication without first talking to a doctor," according to Apple's document.

Apple promised that the ECG app will be available later this year, but it's unclear when watchOS 5.1.2 and iOS 12.1.1 will be released. watchOS 5.1.2 has been in beta testing since November 7, while iOS 12.1.1 has been in beta testing since October 31, so both software updates should be released relatively soon.

A separate Apple training document obtained by MacRumors suggests that irregular heart rhythm notifications will also be enabled in watchOS 5.1.2 on Apple Watch Series 1 through Apple Watch Series 4 models.

The ECG app will not be available on previous-generation Apple Watch models, including the original through Series 3.

I also have an Apple Watch Series 1, so I like this part,

You can already purchase inexpensive portable ecg machines. If you have a heart issue and are concerned you should already be using one of these. Don’t let Apple delaying this feature in Apple Watch put your well-being at risk.

Just wondering how many people are upset because they actually want to replace their existing bulkier portable machine with the Apple Watch vs. those who just want a new gadget.

I’m not sure what they did since the announcement. A one lead ECG is still about as accurate as a coin flip. I’d like to think they trained up their neural network to provide more accurate interpretations.

I am not a medical doctor but from what I have read in academic journals, non intrusive glucose monitoring is still in development. Sensors exist which can analyze sweat (even imperceptible amounts that we all produce regularly) without puncturing the skin but they are not accurate enough for FDA approval for use for glucose monitoring. I think it is just a matter of time before it is commercially available and whoever gets there first is going to make a fortune.

Noninvasive glucose monitoring is one of the holy grails of health management. Devices/sensors have been developed that CAN monitor blood glucose levels noninvasively but the problem is reliability and accuracy. The last thing you want is for a device to report an abnormally high glucose when levels are actually low or normal, for example - the results of the intervention from a false reading (in this case, administering insulin) could be life-threatening.

I agree, whoever comes up with a solution will make a fortune, but it will still be quite some time before tech like this is mainstream.

(I am a medical doctor, BTW)

You're confusing the term "one lead" with "unipolar lead". They're not the same thing. And the Series 4 Watch EKG sensor is bipolar.

I am pissed that this will not work with my Series 3!! I could really use this app. Apple has a way to make me spend money. I might be stubborn and not buy a Series 4 until refurbs come along.
Are you pissed every time Apple comes out with new hardware that has a capability that wasn't there when you purchased the hardware you have now? I am pissed my Apple ][ won't run Mac software.

Can’t wait to see which of my hearts the ECG measures.

EDIT: None of them are showing up. Not even the ****** lower-left-quadrant one. :(

Having downloaded 5.1.2 beta onto the watch I don’t see the app or how to use it? Am I missing something?

These days Apple seems to either promise something and never deliver, or the time to delivery is so long, enthusiasm (and trust) has waned. They need to stop that. It’s really annoying.

I don't run betas, but are you also running iOS beta 12.1.1 on your phone?
Is your Apple ID on the phone a US account? Is the watch also a US Apple ID account?

Being someone who can read them I like the idea that people just need to remember the time of the event and I can evaluate what was captured. Since heart disease is the most likely thing to kill humans this has the potential to provide great historical data for patients. It also gives people the opportunity to contribute to cardiac research of an unprecedented scale.
If its accurate. After extensive reading it seems it can go either way.
But I agree with you, it has great potential and it's a great feature
