An App store for OSX? Closed model? It would KILL the mac platform in no short time. Whomever thought this was going to happen should be shot for it.

My iMac is not a phone. It does not need tight control.

However, I wouldn't mind seeing Flash die a horrible death and never run on my Macs again.

Why on earth would we need a Mac OS X "app store?"

What does the iPhone app store give people? 1. Searchable access to lots of applications. 2. The knowledge that Apple has done some minimal amount of checking, so the application is not obvious garbage. 3. The knowledge that whatever application I download, Apple has had a certain amount of contact with the author, so it should be possible to find the author if he caused intentional damage. 4. The knowledge that whatever application I download, it is the application that was put on the store and not a trojan posing as that application. 5. The knowledge that if a download an application that is later found to be malicious, Apple can yank it from my phone.

These are all positive things. There are the negative things: That I can't download things that don't go through Apple, that Apple can reject apps for reasons that I might disagree with, knowing that Apple can actually remove apps I paid for from my phone - Amazon did something similar with, of all books, "1984" by George Orwell.

So an application store for MacOS X, as long as it is not exclusive, wouldn't be a bad thing.

:confused:if that guy was fired for showing woz the ipad thats just bad especially of all the people to show it to the guy is still held in high regard by the apple community THAT JUST SUCKS APPLE ! the guy that fired him should be fired for giving apple bad press coverage .

From Wozniak we know two things: He showed the iPad to Wozniak. He was fired.

Now first showing it to Wozniak _is_ a reason to be fired. If you are an engineer and you are told "show this new gadget to absolutely nobody", then that includes Wozniak, the Pope and the Queen of England. If they come and want to see it, you tell your manager who can make the decision instead of you. It is not your decision to make.

Second, if he showed it to Wozniak, who else did he show it to? If he showed it to Wozniak who was surrounded by twenty journalists, or if he showed it first to Wozniak, then to his own wife, children and brother-in-law who works at Microsoft, should he be fired then? All these scenarios are completely consistent with what Wozniak said.

Apple are no longer supporting the download section. No longer taking submissions and not updating it. This is why rumours started of a new App Store for OS X.

Huh, that is weird. I think that this info should be included in the actual MR news post here, because I think it's a very significant sign that something new might be happening on this topic.

It looks like the last new apps added to Apple's OS X download section was a full month ago, march 26. That's a (relatively) really long time not to add a new app to their downloads. Did they release an official message regarding shutting down the Mac software download section?

All you need is http://www.versiontracker.com.

Wow that's a bit extreme...the guy is a dirty rat in your eyes?

It was the day of release, and he was allowed to take it. He showed Steve Wozniack. Come on now. There is more to this story on another site, and it's pretty lame. Steve Jobs is a bad dude, there really is no two ways about it.

Don't just throw the bomb and run. Link to the site.

I think Apple is in severe danger and becoming more evil than Microsoft was during their heyday.

Sorry, but showing Woz Apple product when it comes out shouldn't be a state crime and cause for firing. They need common sense, for crying out loud Woz co-founded Apple.

Damn!

I think that Apple surpassed MS in the "evil" stakes some time ago. Won't stop me buying their products though.

While I understand how serious NDAs are, you'd think that some leniency would be shown when the person who got to view the iPad was Woz and the fact that it was only shown 15 minutes early. Disappointed that Woz hasn't gone to bat for the guy either, you'd think of all the people in Apple, perhaps even the world, he'd be in a ideal situation to persuade (his friend) Jobs to reconsider.

Why don't you just uninstall it!?!?!

Nobody is forcing you to have it man :D

If you don't know how to uninstall browser plug-in yourself you can always ask Apple Genius and he / she will do it for you for about $200 - $300

Hahahahaha

Most of the speculation is that it's somehow about money.

I personally believe it's about ego, somebody in the ministry who wanted to feel important and decided to "ban" the iPad without checking with anyone else first.

You're reading way too much into this. In Israel 802.11b, g and n are allowed, while 802.11a is not. So every device capable of 802.11a must be certified that it will not interfere with 802.11b/g/n networks. Assuming the device already has approval from the American FCC, this is just a formality. At some point the customs agents realized that this was a wifi device, so it was covered by the wifi certification rule, so unless it was on the approved list, they were supposed to confiscate it. The ministry was never involved in the decision to ban the iPad.

Ordinarily, Apple's representative in Israel (iDigital - strangely, they now have an iPad on the front page) would file the paperwork and get the devices approved. This time they were late doing this, because Apple does not plan to allow them to have any until July. Once the bad press hit them, they filed the paperwork and the ministry approved the iPad a few days later.

If I were more of a suspicious type, I would think that iDigital wanted this to happen to stop people from buying iPads abroad, but I'm not, so I don't :)

Actually it is possible that the guy was.

He removed a unit out of the area it was supposed to remain in and showed it to someone likely not authorized to see it.

That's way more grounds for being fired than the accidental loss of a prototype one is real world testing with authorization in the wild.

..one employee showed a device

..the other employee lost a device.

Not sure which is the bigger offense:confused:

How many people use VersionTracker, and how many people use the iPhone app store? And VersionTracker doesn't have some of the advantages that the app store would have.

Personally, I prefer MacUpdate.com. I use it on a daily basis, especially for the MacPromo section.

With both of them you can read reviews, rate / comment , search, download... its like the, err, AppStore.

What an inane and pointless comment by the Woz. Yeah I got an apple employe to show me an ipad early, and got him sacked. Great...

And Woz, works for apple, I wasn't aware of that....

Macupdate is really great, much better than version tracker imho although it doesn't get that much attention. And they offer a very nice app too that automatically updates all your purchases. I also really like their suggest another similar app feature, makes is a breeze to compare and contrast.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

While I don't support a closed Mac App Store, there is some room to be filled here. I like only having to go to one place to get stuff. I also enjoy the uniformity of the description, screenshots, reviews, and one click buy tied to iTunes. Uninstall is better on the iTouch devices and installing is WAY better.

We've gotten used to it, but the way of installing by dragging an application from the disc image is ridiculous. And then having to eject the disc image? That's dumb.

If you are pick pocketed, you go to the police; this guy called the bar.

The guy might not know for sure that he got pick-pocketed, we don't know that he didn't call the police, and you absolutely call the bar anyway even if you do suspect theft, to cover all your bases.

Better than a certain other OS that requires an installer and a trip to the registry for the smallest progs. A friend of mine who's more versed in Windows than I am in Mac was surprised that disk images were natively supported on the Mac.
(I, OTOH, was surprised it wasn't widely used on Windows.. heh)

He's an Apple employee in name only. Woz asked to be made an Apple employee for life for mostly sentimental reasons, and he still gets a small paycheque (or so he claims.) He doesn't actually have anything to do with Apple.

iPad 3G to work flawlessly in Europe!

Hi all...

I travel a lot to Europe and was quite curious to see if it will be easy to just purchase a micro-sim card in Europe when I get my iPad 3G to use it out there. This may not be breaking news but I was able to reach Steve Jobs (!) and I guess I got my one-word answer! (see below) :D

My question is then, why would anyone purchase the ipad 3G in Europe for hundred of dollars more (price and Euro difference) when they can just buy it here and swap the sim card?

George

Dear Steve,

A quick question...

Once I get my iPad 3G will I be able to travel to Europe with it and use another carrier's Micro-SIM card to browse while I'm out there?

Best,

George Duran
