With good reason. Apple itself isn't sure iPhone X will sell - hence the concurrent introduction of the conventional 8 and 8+ as a backup plan.

It's even stranger they're keeping the 7, 7+, 6, 6+ and SE around. I could understand the entry-level SE, but all the others suggests they have little confidence in their newest phone. It's a muddled message. Uncharecteristically Apple.
No. It’s all about having a phone at all these different price points. So basically whatever price is in your budget Apple has something for you. Of course we can question whether the X should be priced at $999 but Apple hasn’t provided any guidance suggesting an increase in margins so its likely the component costs for the X are higher. And yeah Apple management probably is unsure if people will balk at the $999 price point which is one reason why the 8 exists.

(EDIT: Changed '6, 6+' to '6s, 6s+')
I think the "uncharacteristically" is the new norm where apple will now have price points from $399 to $999. Budget, high-end, and two mid-tier models. Personally I think this is good for consumers and good for apple. I expect some of these models to drop off in the future.

People don't have any issues buying Samsung tvs that show 10 different models on the floor or buying cars, which is one of the worst buying experiences on the planet.

I also don't think apple will have any issues selling the iphone x. I don't see the average consumer, having a point of view expressed in a lot of these posts. The average consumers (whoever their demographic is) just wants products that work.

Of all my complaints about the iPhone X this isn't one of them. a 40 minute video on this seriously. I can count the number of times on my hands I've browsed web pages in landscape mode on my iPhone, do people really do that?
All I ever use landscape mode for is photography and videography and looking at photos and videos. I sometimes use it for some hidden objects games. I am not in the strict sense of the word "worried" but I hope the display won't seem too narrow for my preferences.

At least the edges of the display are nice and flat. Using Samsung Edge devices for over a year left me with a distinct desire to avoid those styles of curved edge displays for my next major smartphone purchase, which is why I'm not considering the Note 8 this year. The distortions those edges cause do impact my user experience more than I anticipated. It was something I had to use for a while to realize. The notch could also potentially distract me, but it could end up fading from my awareness. I can't predict this one.

That's why I'll comment on my impressions of design choices Apple made for IPhone X, but I won't have an overly emotional response to any of it until I actually live with the phone for at least a week of intensive but normal use.

Speaking of which, I'm not going to do something weird like try to film a video in a pitch dark room to go looking for problems, as some have done a few years ago on this forum to look for a "pixel-gate" type problem that could only be seen under the most contrived of circumstances. Anyone who goes out of their way to contrive a circumstance in order to rant about some "problem" nobody would see in reasonable use is being completely unreasonable and a drama llama.

I can understand some people being upset at some choices Apple is making. I was pretty cheesed off at the ditching of the headphone jack myself and said so. I still am annoyed, so I'm not lacking empathy for people who are disenchanted with Apple's decisions at times. It is just a little challenging talking to people who are really upset to the level this Chris Pirillo is exhibiting. That's why I'm trying to moderate my own responses and curb my own kneejerk reactions. I certainly do have them, but I feel they're not appropriate responses for a science and technology discussion. I don't want to let my emotions cloud my observations and judgement and my ability to converse with others.

When has Apple ever been first with anything? This is the same old tired argument we hear every year. So and so did it first. Where is the evidence that the general non techie consumer cares about that?
Its not an old tired old argument, when Apple themselves promote themselves as innovative and market leading, so its hard to reconcile their products as innovative but are only catching up to the competition

The thing Apple has going for it is all the hard work of Job’s instilling and delivering several years of innovation and good hardware/software integration, along with excellent customer service and product reliability. That’s why an iphone with 2gb of ram runs more smoothly and quickly than an Android with a better processor and twice the ram. In many cases Cook and Co are drifting off of this only producing some minor innovations.

However, as long as they can continue to make products with the best hardware software integration, customer service and product reliability they don’t need to have the latest specs. However my fear is Cook and Co’s drifting will only last so long and the focus seems to be off of those principles Jobs prized to a more sales emphasis which often undercuts product integrity. Time will tell. But I highly doubt this ugly form factor would have been approved by Jobs.

I hope he pissed off enough people here so getting one for myself will be easier. Honestly I think he made several good points but truth is I'll still get one and a new one one next year and after that. I have faith in Apple until proven otherwise. That's the good thing about competition.

So you will put up with their design choice no matter what? What does that make you?

PermaTurd is hilarious. He is right. LMAO. If Samsung did this...iFans will have never let up. Just like y'all did with the Note 7 battery issue and the constant jokes. That notch is just lol.

Why do you keep sharing that gif when that goes against Apple’s design guidelines anyway. That is just a mock-up some developer created, not a real-life example of how contacts will be displayed.

I'm actively pushing the conversation around iPhone X forward because it seems that NO OTHER APPLE / TECH MEDIA OUTLET OR PUNDIT IS GIVING IT THE ATTENTION IT DESERVES. All I see are nerds falling over themselves over this spec and that spec while glossing over the glaring issues that can't be mitigated so easily in software. And, keep in mind...

Loll have you not used the internet at all since the announcement? This thread, the numerous YouTube videos shared within it, and the hundreds of other thread and articles mentioning the “controversial” notch and other design decisions of the X is proof that your statement above is disingenuous. Nobody else is talking about this? Seriously?

That statement would be like Forbes’ Gordon Kelly claiming to be a legitimate tech journalist and not a serial click-baiting hack who just copy-pastes info from other sites and puts a sensationalist spin to it. (Man I hate that guy, can’t you tell? :D)

You make good points on the rest but this, I had to call you out on it.

It seems like this thread was started by one of his supporters which I really cannot understand how they could tolerate his BS. This guy wants to be back in the news because maybe most of his base that supports his lifestyle are leaving after realizing what a charlatan he really is. For example in one of his recent youtube videos he says if he ever contradicts his decision you all should just ignore him and never believe him. Maybe he forgets this video where he bashes the first iPhone and then in less than a couple of weeks becomes the iPhone fanboy:

This guy also claims to be the one responsible for the improvement of Google Maps app without providing any proof whatsoever and thinks no one will ever doubt him. It turned out to be a complete lie and I personally called him out on it. Then he goes on to claim that it was because of him Windows Vista was exposed as a terrible OS as if no one had ever noticed how bad it was until he came along. His smug and condescending attitude is what puts off most people who can see through him. He pretends how cursed he is with an amazing eye for software glitches and lags in the IOS and how he wishes to be one of the ordinary people sometimes, what a prick!

He keeps saying how he doesn't care about hardware while going gaga over the design of the iPhone Jet Black:
I just refuse to believe a guy that rants on a device without actually using it while playing with his Star Wars dolls, sorry!

You are very right! I called him out on the upcoming iPhone X only to get told that benchmarks don't mean anything, Apple are going down the pan, IOS 11 is rubbish even tho it's not out yet. The next iPhone will be his last apparently, I wonder how he will respond when the iPhone X comes out and people end up loving it and it's features are proven (just like Touch ID) to be great. His subscriber base has dropped dramatically.

Sort of like how Google Had to stop using the motto "Don't be evil." Everyone starts scrutinizing your every move on just how evil it is.

The notch isn’t a big deal and everyone will forget about it 10min into using the phone. If Apple would have made a continuous black line using software it would have looked like the S8. I don’t mind the notch and I think it makes unique from all the other phones.

The notch IS a big deal. For starters, it appears to lead to a high manufacturing failure of the display. Second, it would not have been as big a deal is the "ears" would have been accessible only to the OS, for the status icons. Simple really. An app wants full screen, the top edge is a straight line at the bottom of the notch.

Some people view it as a big deal, some people don't its subjective. The manufacturing stuff is all conjecture we don't actually know. The Touch ID manufacturing rumors seem to be false, I wouldn't be surprised if the failure rate we've heard about the screens is false too.

To the masses that will buy the phone it is a non issue. It's only an "issue" to those "comic book guy" types. They can come from either the Apple or Android camp. They just want to froth at the mouth over something to sound smarter.
