Like his pal Bill, Mircosoft co-founder Paul Allen has a Porsche 959 (how original), but drives around Washington State mostly in an '88 Mazda B-Series pickup.

I think I like Paul a lot more now. :) I like those trucks from the late eighties, and it's nice to know he doesn't always use the Porsche to say "Look how rich I am!"

Im shocked at the stubborness of peoples opinions here. How can you criticise Jaguar. How on earth can you say anything bad about them. We used to own a present model and the old one 1999 one and 2005 one. They were both awesome. Awesome is infact an understament, they were beyond expectations. AND considering the crap treatment they get from FORD, they have done very well..... Lets just not mention the X-Type;)

And we also had a 5 series and idrive is brilliant, it had its flaws but its simplicity is superb. The QUATTROPORTE, sorry sir for spelling it wrong, i have not driven one unlike u as i am only 17 but who cares how it drives, its about passion, Jaguar and Maserati have passion, unlike MODERN american cars. I do have a soft spot for old mustangs and the new Ford interceptor conept but 99% of what come out of an american car factory is crap. Even rover who had no money what so produced pretty decent things. eg rover 75.

If there is any more critiscism I will be glad to answer is as best I can and if you want, I will prove anything you want me to.

One more thing, Jaguar or a Cadillac, I think its a pretty easy answer.

Maserati? Passion? The gear box was harsh the turning radius was quick without the suspension to back it up so the car had a very panicky feel to it. The engine was ill suited to a large car, generating it's power in the higher rpm ranges. And as stated earlier Jags have terrible electrical problems(since resolved) however they still have HUGE quality control issues.
Go look at JD power. And as for idrive, if you had ever used it you would not call it"brilliant".

You are 17 there for you cannot drive, so do not speak of things that you have no understanding of.

Basically you have proven that you should not be allowed to talk.

LOL... i agree that the quattroporte is more like a trophy wife's/husband's car, but any maserati coupe is less boring than the SL. however, jag is a flop and the latest XK8 is another lackluster.

while i don't usually trust JD power, i'd also agree that idrive sucks. for non-touch screen system, audi has done a little better job with the MMI. but when it comes to electronics, teh japanese wins.

hey! some of us started driving when we were 14/15. :D

Basically you have proven that you should not be allowed to talk.

haha! so harsh! :D

On a side note, while BG is the richest person in the world, the richest family is the Walton (Walmart) family. And if you add up their wealth, they about double what BG is worth.

When Sam Walton was alive, even with all that wealth, he still drove his old pickup truck, continued to eat in the same greasy spoon places and got his haircuts in the same barber shop he did before he made all his wealth. :)

the waltons are "a little bit" extreme. not only the executives fly economy during business trips, they also share motel rooms. additionally, manufacturers' samples, i.e. desks, chairs, etc, are often put to use at the walmart HQ until they are really worn out.

glad that SJ isn't that "efficient," but he sure could drive something with more personality.

Interesting about the Waltons...

If memory serves, BG used to fly economy stateside and Business Class over seas. Same held true for his folks.

At the same time, Apple folks flew First Class.

Definitely a different mindset between these two companies at that time. Not sure what there policies are now.

whatever guys, lincoln, mercedes; psh. Everybody knows he drives an iCar, docks it with his next gen iPod and the click wheel is used for steering. :p

I agree with you sooo much. bring on the r10:D

its 0-60 should be in the 3s not 4s

Even though it is slow it's sooo beautiful, at least in my opinion, maybe its a good thing so people can catch a glimpse of who's driving it :D :apple: . And since it's Jobs he can probably afford upping the performance with this package making it 530 HP and 0-60 in 3.9 :

I dont know what u drive but i assume it must be a ford taurus or something awful like that. Passion has nothing to do with how good the car actullay is. Look at the delorean, it was awful, but there was something about it, and it still turns heads today. It was awesome. we used to have a 5 series which DID have idrive and i loved it. And we have owned three Jaguar XJ's since 1999 and had only minor probelms with each, The new model 2003- XJ was beutiful and was apprecited in England because us english know a thing or two aboout cars. American cars probably never break down (which is a shame), because they use technology from the medivel times, eg LEAF SPRINGS. I mean its 2007 and they use leaf springs, eg corvette. American cars are so dull and unimaginative. Have u ever been in a chrsler neon.. Oh my goodness. Its shocking.
Maybe if u were a half decent driver which u probabaly arnt because all american roads are straight then maybe you could drive the maserati properly. James May and J Clarkson loved the maserati, apart from the gearbox, and i think they know more about cars then you do fool. I maybe 17 but im not an arse. And I am taking driving lessons.

The entire point of the car is how it drives.

I'd much rather drive a Quattroporte with a Tubi exhaust than an S-Class. I would find the harsh gearbox very fun to drive. To hell with smooth gear changes, I want to be thrown back into the seat on every shift. I love high-revving engines; I take the Bimmers to redline on a daily basis.

I think iDrive is crap. I think it's so much crap that I had to special order a 330i E90 to get it without iDrive. It took four months to get here. The concept of being forced to look to see what I'm doing is infuriating. Why should I have to look at the screen to see which menu I am in and which function I am controlling, when I can just reach over and press a button without looking because I already know where every button is. I rarely look at the controls or their screens when I change the radio or climate control.

I was considering the redesigned X5 until I found out that it can no longer be ordered without iDrive.

you dont need a nice car when you have the worlds second largest privately owned yacht. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octopus_(yacht)

1. The 959's they brought in do say look how rich I am, because Paul and Bill funded the change in Show and Display law that allowed their importation. Jerry Seinfield's 959 cost him $700,000 (he also owns a large collection of Porsches); and

2. I can't believe people here think that billionaires sit around contemplating which single car will enhance their image. kcross is on the mark. The question is not Which car does ___ drive, it is how much is their (car, yacht, Van Gogh) collection worth, and they don't have just one of each item.

whoa... whoa... whoa... you are so off base. so what if the delorean was built from "passion" (and allegedly cocaine money) and still turns heads. it only does so because it was so ill concieved that its amazing that ever even was made (and back to the future 1/2/3).

and i dont think anyone would call a maserati a real sports car. even with a tubi exhaust (though itd sound amazing... i prefer kreis-sieg though)... its a gt car.

have you ever driven a real sports car? hell i bet the '02 Z06 i had, with leaf springs, could kick the hell out of anything youve driven. want to talk about "real" roads? stick this in google maps and look at what i drive every day "Kahekili Hwy, Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii 96793, United States"

Yes but most places are more las vegas and san francisco then hawaii. And im a learner so ive only driven suzukis and vauxhalls. I would love to drive around hawaii though

wow, i was shocked to see Chris Pirillo and i drive the same car! he must be off his rocker, what with all the money he has. im in grad school and the TSX was the most budget-friendly car i could afford. i didnt realize it was considered "techy" by a techmeister. makes me feel better about my purchase. :p

the porschefiles (like in that list of mega-rich geeks and their cars) are driving probably the best daily driver/sports car out there. ferraris and lambos are sexier, and are arguably more fun to drive, but they are meant more for the track or occasional Sunday drive, imo.

i cant believe steve jobs would drive without a license. i think they took off the plate prior to taking that picture of his car. how annoying would it be to be steve jobs, who is hopefully a busy man, to be pulled over by every new highway cop?

You won't get pulled over solely for not having license plates. At least not often.

like said way earlier... there are tons of people that drive without plate. its not that unusual at all. i dont know why everyone makes a big deal about it. i know a lot of people that go without plates for years if they ever put them on.

because they use technology from the medivel times, eg LEAF SPRINGS. I mean its 2007 and they use leaf springs, eg corvette.

First, STOP LISTENING TO JEREMY CLARKSON! The man's words will rot your brain.
Second, read up on how leaf springs are used in the Corvette. It's not like in a truck (where a leaf-sprung solid axle is near-perfect).
Third, the Neon is an econobox. No one expects much from it other than A <-> B (Just, don't ask about the SRT-4 okay? Re-entry's a bitch)
Fourth, and final: STOP LISTENING TO JEREMY CLARKSON! Even though he says roads are mostly straight in the U.S. HE'S ****ING WRONG.
Maybe if u were a half decent driver which u probabaly arnt because all american roads are straight
Like I said, they aren't all straight. I bet any one of the licensed American drivers posting in this thread could demolish you around an auto-x course, or a track (circuit or drag).
then maybe you could drive the maserati properly. James May and J Clarkson loved the maserati, apart from the gearbox, and i think they know more about cars then you do fool.
Tip: Don't call people a fool over a difference in opinion, especially when your opinion is given to you from someone else.
I maybe 17 but im not an arse.
Prove it.
And I am taking driving lessons.
OH MY GOD I MUST BOW DOWN TO YOUR SUPERIOR KNOWLEDGE OF ALL THINGS AUTOMOTIVE. Where the hell is iGav?

Also, as far as British vs. American cars (wait, are there still British-owned car companies?) I only have this to say: Lucas If you don't know who they are, read up

Why does this have to turn into such as bash-fest? If somebody thinks a car has more passion than another, then so be it. Everybody's entitled to their opinion right? Also, at least some users are honest in saying that they're still learning to drive. There's way too many people here saying that they drive or have driven super expensive cars. I don't buy it.

I think Chris Bangle is right, though. German cars have ZERO passion. Its all about engineering. That includes Porsches. Maserati and Jaguar (along side Ferrari, Lambo, etc) all have many flaws but they're (in my opinion) beautiful looking cars. Oftentimes its form over function. The new Jag XK looks better than anything thats come from Germany or the US in ages. The Maserati Quattroporte is also the only executive style limo that has any passion whatsoever. Now it has a full-auto box the gear shifting is fine too (at least so I've read).

As for the Corvette, that discussion can go on forever. I think its a decent enough car, which is great value for money, but like the Merc SL it has no street-cred. It also has no exclusivity whatsoever in the US. I'd never buy one.

It seems as if this is a difference of opinon between the europeans an americans which is a shame. But i am so glad somebody agrees with me and has the same views i have. You are so right about the engineering and passion and hopefully people will take you more seriously then they take me.

Looking at a map of american roads and cities clearly shows mostly straight roads.

The thing is that the neon is proably the same class as a european focus and the focus is superb for the price. I dont get the notion that cars lower down should be built so badly. Ford europe and peugeout and renault and citreon manage to make very cheap cars of very high quality, so why do the american car buyurs still accept such crap. Show them an european focus and they would be shocked. Fiesta focus and mondeo, why does ford not sell them in america. There is no need for cars to be soo dull,

okay first thing i have to know. i really hope your name is actually chris bangle. because if its not you real name, i cant think of a reason in the world that you would use that name (if anyone else knows who that is theyll get it).

yes. there are many flat roads in america. there are also many mountain roads, windy roads, cliff roads, etc. especially on our mountain lined coasts. america also has roughly 38 times more land area than the UK, we need straight flat roads. but hey, guess where a ton of our people live... on the coasts!

the neon and the european focus arent even comperable. we have crappier economy cars. we dont have liter class cars here. we dont drive those. we dont drive ultra compact cars. there is little demand for very high quality economy cars here. people wont shell out the money for them. additionally, what you find as "exciting" we see as dull. i cant get hot and bothered over a smart, even if gordon murray drives one.

as far as people owning/driving expensive cars. youre on a mac forum. a lot of these people are willing to pay a little more for what they enjoy. on top of that, financing stateside is easier to come by than pretty much anywhere else on earth. children, dogs, and trees get credit here (really). americans also overspend on cars. we also dont have one car per family (like is common in many european countries) especially in our more expansive states, its too hard to get around.

one more thing! heres your passion.

coincidence? i think not.

Mercury or Maserati? Hmmmm... ok im wrong about the roads but the mercury enforces my point. it looks korean (hyundai) for goodnesss sake.. The murcury is ugly and dull.
